Looking for a package deal on Baldur's Gate games + others

My Baldur's Gate 2 CDs are getting old and worn out, I need to get a copy of Baldur's Gate 1 as I had always borrowed a friends copy in the past, and with Domi's upcoming Icewind Dale NPC mod I'm interested in giving it a try.

Does anyone know of a good package deal including at least BG1, ToTSC, BG2, ToB, IWD1, IWD2 and any IWDish expansions. Of course if this package also incuded other games like Knights of the Old Republic, Jade Empire or other quality games I wouldn't mind either.

Of course, the sticky bit is this needs to be available in Canada, or shippable to Canada for a reasonable price. I'm in the Edmonton area, and can't seem to find anything at any of the local stores (the irony of this is not lost on me, considering that Bioware's head offices are here).

So, any suggestions are appreciated.

There is a DVD compilation with all the BG, IWD and NWN games for around US$50. AFAIK, that's North American compatible. There is also a compilation with just BG1+2 but as the bigg said, I've mainly heard about that only from Europeans. The main reason you wouldn't want that is because, shipping costs aside, the video would probably not be compatible (PAL vs. NTSC). I've heard bad things about Atari's packaging (disks not working, DVD issues, etc.) in these compilations, but if you don't own any or even most of those games, you might be saving money over buying them all separately. BG1-TotSC alone is running around the same price last I checked. Aging like a fine wine I guess :).

That's pretty lame they'll ship to the US but not Canada. The media format is the same. You could always use a mail forwarding service. You'll just end up paying a few bucks more, +/- depending on how quickly you want it. The next best option is to try to find them all used, maybe on eBay, but what with shipping and BG1's price alone, you'll probably end up paying more.

You've tried play.com for just bg1+2 or for the deluxe? Or amazon.com?

When you've got the discs I'd recommend installing them in a way as to NOT use the original discs.. I use Game Jackal, a program that copies all the needed info from the disc on startup, so you don't need using the disc. Works for most games. Or you can use Deamon Tools. It's leagal, at least in my country, as long as you've got the game leagally. Or you could just make a copy of the discs and use those when playing the game..

Note that Northern Europe countries have a slightly more decent IP law than everywhere in the world, so stuff that is legal in second-and-an-half countries like Denmark/Norway/Sweden is likely illegal in third-world countries like USA, Canada, the rest of Europe etc.

Creating a backup copy is legal in Canada. I like to use DVD X Copy, or Game X Copy to make a duplicate.

Also, looking at Play.com I notice it is a site from the UK. Would I have Pal/compatibility issues with it, or do the versions sold in the UK normally work ok with NA releases?

I don't know.. But I'd probably ask what versions they can sell you before buying..

I had trouble installing and playing BGI+ToSC on my computer.. I found out I could make it work if I changed the language configuration of windows, so anything is possible, I guess..

No clue either really, but some people will sell you versions that may not necessarily be optimal for your region. It may be more an issue of regional lockout than anything. While this may be circumventable, particularly on computer DVD drives, some of the methods are hackish at best. I think you may be able to change the region of your drive a certain number of times before you're stuck with the last one selected. I've never really messed with it. I think it primarily applies to DVD video - not sure whether it affects data or anything in this release. They seem to be pretty strict with regional shipping of this release at least, though the US/Canada thing doesn't make much sense. But there are also laws governing computer game distributions (and country-specific content). Most seem to be based around gore and violence, which IMO is pretty minimal with these games, as compared with first-person shoot-em-ups etc. But who knows what kind of wack ideas the people who make these decisions have. Your best bet is to try to get a North American version. Probably cheaper too, what with crappy exchange and shipping rates. Though GoGamer seems to be the only NA distributor for now for some reason. Maybe it'll show up on eBay and Amazon eventually.

I've bought game DVDs (both Mac and PC) from North America without suffering such issues using them here in Scandinavia, so I very much doubt that there's any regional coding involved with data DVDs. I'm pretty sure that NTSC / PAL issues are irrelevant here as well. Probably just a matter of different companies holding the distribution rights for the various regions.

Amazon is actually pretty strict about where they ship software and the like, but eBay is (almost) always a good bet.
