Custom kits disappearing?

Feuille and I have been testing the Luxleys, and in the midst of various installation/uninstallation/reinstallation fun and joy Sebastian's custom kit went away and he reverted to a vanilla bard; the custom kit the PC was using from the SP stuff pack also went away. Sebastian and Andrei were already spawned - and in the party - at this point.

 

What I'm concerned about is that this could happen to a player if they're installing and reinstalling mods on top of each other - is there some preventative measure I can take to ensure that it's more stable? And if anyone could tell me why the kit might go away like that, that would be great - that way I can warn people not to do whatever-it-is.
