Tough rats...

Hi David

A minor issue I've noticed on my last few playthroughs of BG1. In the quest to clear out the rats in Candlekeep, the rats seem to have very high damage resistance - I only do 1/2 damage on normal hits, 3 on a critical. No idea if it is due to SCS - any thoughts?

cheers

Yes - although I wouldn't expect the components I have installed to have an effect. Might be something to do with BG1 UB...

This has nothing to do with SCS.

Rats *does* have very high damage resistance in vanilla game. But you don't see it since they have only very few HP (perhaps just one, I don't remember).

But the BG2 Tweaks component "Maximum HP for NPCs (the bigg) -> For All Creatures in Game" will give the rats much more HP, so they are very hard to kill because of their damage resistance. Don't worry, this is the only problem I know with this component.

Yeah, it bumps the rats up to their theoretical maximum HP--they're one hit die, so they get eight hit points. (No, the algorithm can't do partial or zero hit dice, since I'm sure they're not a full hit die in P&P.) Since they have high damage resistance, it makes them unusually tough.

Of course it's nothing to do with SCS. Making things harder by adding high resistances isn't SCS's style. Now, if the rats called for help from other rats, drank potions of hill giant strength, and were supported by spellcasting prebuffed rats who preferentially target people without magic protection, that'd be different. Smarter Rats, coming for v7...

lol, thanks guys. Glad to hear it's not part of some "Enhanced Adamantine Rat Encounter".

Is there any kind of rationale why these rats have high damage resistance in vanilla? Have they been munching on iron filings? I broke three flails on the little buggers. I hope I don't have as much difficulty killing those rabid chickens in the Baldur's Gate storehouse.

Maybe it's a way to simulate that they are small and hard to get a good hit on, so they reduce the damage dealt. You are swinging at the ground to hit the rats, how long do you think the flail would last hitting the ground?

Although I would just chalk it up to bad luck on the rolls to break.
