Latest mod install - how'd I do?

Hello,

Here's the WeiDU log for the latest install of the game on my G4 Quicksilver Mac. I have BGII - SoA and ToB installed, but no patches, as these cause crashing errors. If there's anything I should do differently, I'd very much like to know, especially as the game now moves like molassas in January. Those items marked as uninstalled I changed to try to improve game speed, but doing so made no difference.

The new WeiDU log looks like this:

TIA for any advice! I really want to get the game to a playable state, while sacrificing as little as possible from these mods. I don't plan to install any others that are currently available, but I'm open to suggestions.

Happy gaming,

Eric

The only thing I can say off the top of my head is that I find the :)??'s worrying. All these have actual component names, so I'm thinking that perhaps an old weidu.log might be lingering, or some other thing to make the component numbers not match up.

Your override folder is likely to be quite full. I hope this doesn't cause lag.

I was always told to install the bg patches.

Auren is in V6 now if you want her ToB content.

Ahhh...I'll get V6 right away, then!

As for the patches, yeah, they're recommended, but my experience has been that the game runs better for me without them. There's precedent for this, as I saw mention of it on a support page somewhere (maybe it was at macplay.com).

Thanks!

I found those marks odd as well. This is the first time I've seen them, and yet things installed successfully...though there were a few components from some mods that the installers skipped because of what was present and what wasn't, IIRC. I'll pay as close attention as I can to content involving those items in my test games.

I used Install-mod.sh from Install-tools to install all the mods. Its folder, and the folders of all extracted mods, I placed in the main game folder, and drag-dropped each mod folder, in turn, onto the Terminal window with Install-mod.sh to install.

Heh, yeah, the override folder is quite bloated now! The only files I was confident to delete were some .ogg files left over from conversion. I verified first that there are .wav equivalents before deleting these. I'd like to know if any other files in the override folder could be safely deleted.

Thanks,

Eric

Another interesting development: my override folder (containing close to 16,000 items!) had some converted audio files that ended in .ogg.wav, so I changed the names of each (they all began with "R!"). The files aren't accessed in the early part of the game, but after I did this, I noticed that the game moves just slightly faster than it did before. It's still too slow to play, though, as it appears that everything moves about half as fast as it should. In BGConfig, I've got just about everything maxed, and am using 1024x768 resolution.

I welcome any additional helpful hints on this topic!

Thanks,

Eric

You can delete anything with ogg.wav extensions. The game can't play it, so it's just taking up space.

I have read about some people with overfull overrides biffing to increase performance, but I can't offer any advice there. You might actually have some luck going somewhere where extremely full overrides are commonplace, i.e. Mega-Mods Help at SHS, and running a search on biffing. Please note that this not always a good idea, however some folks who routinely use mammoth installations seem to find it helpful.

You certainly sound like you know what you're talking about, so it's possible that you can sort out your own batch files. I'm not that savvy, so I'd want to look at an example. Also, since you run on a Mac, I'm not sure you can run a BAT file. But you probably know about Mac alternatives.

Having done so myself just now, I've got a couple things for you to look at.

Here is the first. Please pay careful attention to CamDawg's advice on the subject.

Erebusant has something to say about those question marks. Read carefully. Something might have gone awry. I don't know much (read "anything") about Macs, but I do know that file structure changes that result in ????? are not promising. It seems to mean that you installed a new version of something that was trying to uninstall the old version and that the files didn't match up, so it didn't know what to do. In other words, you'll have remnants of an old installation lingering, and your dialog.tlk is almost certainly messed up. If it were me, I would follow erebusant's advice here, or start over, uninstalling the game and simply deleting the entire game folder, which will probably take about as long.

And after about half an hour searching, serious paydirt. Read every post in that thread, and follow the links.

Hello again!

Thanks so much for the leads. I'll be sure to thoroughly look over what I find at those locations. I do know a good deal about Macs, but not the deep-down system aspects of OS X. I know far more about Mac OS 9, but am guessing that the game will perform much better under OS X, or else I'd have installed it under OS 9 (still considering that in the back of my mind). I know nothing of .bif files, but I'm fairly certain that Macs don't recognize .bat files, and I know that they don't recognize .exe files at all.

Some mod installers convert .ogg files to .wav format, and some don't, and I can handle that just fine with a little audio conversion program I found. I'm wondering if, after installing a mod, I can safely delete the mod's initial folder from my BGII game folder. Probably wouldn't make a difference in game performance, but I like to save space when possible.

Deleting the entire game and starting over is easy enough, as all that requires is for me to drop the game folder in the trash and empty it. Takes several seconds. It's the mod installs that take the longest time. In this current install, I haven't added a newer version of any mod over an older one, but now I have the latest version of Auren Aseph to install, and I'm holding off on adding that one till I've made some progress with the game's speed.

With much gratitude,

Eric

Hey, Eric, you're right, it is installing the mods that takes all the time.

And I found a timesaver as I dug through the threads looking for an answer to your question.

You can biff your override using WeiDU from the command line of DOS window. You don't have to mess around with bat files at all.

If you follow the link all the way at the bottom, the one labeled "pay dirt," you'll be able to find instructions on how to use WeiDU to biff.

But please, read the cautions first. Uninstalling mods after biffing is a little more complicated than it would be on an unbiffed install.

I looked at that, and now I'm bookmarking it for further review. The prospect appeals to me and gives me pause at the same time.

Meanwhile, I've done a new overhaul of all the mods, after learning from one of the links you provided about how easy this can be. I restored the necessary few items from my "clean install + Fixpack" and then reinstalled all mods. First, I did the NPCs, then Crossmod Banter Pack, some kits, SP Collection (SP = Sorcerer's Place), and finally tbtweaks and BG2 Tweaks, in that order. This new installation shows only slightly under 14K items in my override folder *L* The game plays a bit slower than it should, but not terribly so. I consider it playable, but would love to improve it. I decided against installing many of the components in the tweaks mods this time, including all the unlimited stackable items and what I saw as redundancies regarding romances and conflicts. I want to go multi-romance, with little to nothing breaking any given one.

The new WeiDU log looks much better, too :)

Thanks,

Eric

I just biffed my override folder and noticed that the number of files biffed is about 100 less than the number of files in the override folder. Does the --make-biff command do all types of files?

Do I need to delete my override folder (or rename it)?

Do the resources in override.bif in the data folder still override the game's default resources?

In general, does biffing provide a performance enhancement or is it just for convience?

Thanks in advance!

I know. :)

But that's why I recommended doing all the reading first.

Eric, the real test will be when you try to play the game, and see whether it helps.

Personally, I stick to a hard-and-fast rule of not installing any mods I don't plan to play *that game.* Since I usually don't install more than two NPC mods at a time, I've never needed to biff myself.

Good luck. I'll be anxious to see how you make out.

It was just a question. Didn't know Biffing was a taboo topic..
