Does manually uninstalling/reinstalling mods overtime cause problems?

Okay, here's a weird problem I have. Normally, to update mods, I usually manually run the setup for the most recently installed mods, and uninstall all their components until I get to the mod I'm updating. In this particular case, was SCS II.

However, whenever I seem to try installing a certain component (in this case, Smarter General AI), I get a "Parsing.Parse_error" in the middle of the installation process, which makes the component uninstallable. Further attempts in reinstall that component keep resulting in that error, and even deleting the entire setup folders/executables and redownloading the files does not fix it.

I've had a similar problem in the past using EasyTutu and Unfinished Business, where again I had uninstalled every mod prior by running their setup files. For some reason, trying to install a certain component in Unfinished Business would also keep leading to a parsing error at some point, and again redownloading did not fix it. I had to delete my entire EasyTutu folder and create a new one from scratch in order to ever install it again.

I do know of that method of backing up (and have actually used it a few times). I'm more wondering if I'll be inevitably forced to reinstall every mod from scratch whenever I want to update a single mod (which can take a while...the Detectable Spells component of SCSII alone took me 30 minutes to install).

Reinstallation is a funny thing. I've gone and reinstalled a mod close to the end of my installation before and had it mess up everything, and yesterday, I reinstalled a mod I had installed right after the fixpack, and everything went fine.

Honestly, though, starting from a clean installation is probably quicker than reinstalling a mod burried in the depths of a mega. I suspect Kulyok might be exagerating a bit on the speed of restroring an installation, however. It usually takes half an hour just for my override folder to delete.

New installs and sometimes re-installs creating problems seems to happen to me quite a bit as well to where I find it easier to just re-install from scratch. I've found that Azazello's info about setting up a batch file to automate much of the installation process helped (for those of us using Windows). Here's a link (I hope it works) to a thread at SHS about how to go about it http://www.shsforums.net/index.php?showtopic=26710

It still takes the same amount of time for installation, but it seems to go quicker because I don't spend as much time trying to remember exactly which components in a mod I chose. The time consumer for me using this process is incorporating new mods.

Hope this helps :band:

For me, it's become routine to restore critical files, delete all the aliases ("shortcuts") and other files/folders that get added to the BGII folder, then go through the hours-long process of installing mod after mod, but it still takes the better part of a day to go from start to finish (if I start in the morning, that is). A distasteful process, but dusting off and nuking the site from orbit is the only way to be sure :)

My override folder currently weighs in at ~190MB for 13,110 items. All portraits are relocated to the portraits folder, and all .wav files are relocated to the sounds folder. Deleting the override folder takes about six seconds on my Mac, under OS X Tiger. I just now tested this by copying the folder to the desktop, then sending it to the Trash and emptying the Trash.

It would be nice to burn the entire install to a DVD, but it's simply too massive *L* As it is, after installing Fixpack, I copied the BGII directory to my external HD for safe keeping, but I don't anticipate completely wiping out the game and copying that again...but who knows? :)

I still recommend checking up Azazello's thread about using a batch script to automate a lot of the mod installation process; it's either at PPG or SHS forums.

I've used that how-to guide to make a generic install and uninstall batch file for those mods that have lots of components to them and for those that I'm always going to install. The installation process probably takes the same amount of time, but it feels like it goes faster and easier.

Heh, if only it was that simple. I'm on a Mac :)

It appears to me that it's easier to reinstall some mods than others, and it may have to do with how deep in the layers of mods it is. I don't recall which one, but one mod that I sometimes attempt to reinstall ends up failing with fatal errors, stating that too many files were open. About the only way I can guarantee that all the mods I have will install successfully for BGII - SoA/ToB, and behave as they should (now that I've done it two or three times), is to start from the clean install including the ToB patch, then install each one in the correct order. I've gotten to where I can do this now without referring to any notes, but I don't consider that a good thing, as I should never have had to reinstall so many times.

Thinking further on this topic, if I've successfully installed a bunch of mods, with several on top of NPC mods, and I later find another NPC mod I'd like to install and try, would it be better to start all over again, reinstalling all mods, or should I simply install the newly obtained mod on top of everything else, and hope for the best? I just downloaded the Bladesinger kit mod, properly called Elven Pack, and I'm very tempted to just install it, but I'm concerned that it might trash my whole set-up, in which case I'll have to redo everything again.

Thoughts? Experiences? I see berelinde posted about having unpredictable results. This is on a Mac, running OS X, btw.

Thanks,

Eric

I don't know why you would want to uninstall a mod.

I tend not to uninstall them, it may break the game. So why tempt Fate? I'll just ignore that mods content if I don't wish my current game to play through it.

I don't know why anyone would uninstall a mod, either. Don't like to overburden weidu-mac :) There have been some mods that caused so much trouble with my set-up (Enhanced BG2 and Subrace Mod were the most problematic). In those cases, I simply removed and deleted all trace of them from my HDs before restoring a clean install and then installing each of the mods I wanted in sequence.

I mostly uninstall/reinstall mods to update to new versions, particularly if they say doing so should be safe.

There's that, as well, and I do the same. Now that everything I've got is current, I'm sure an update to one mod or another is just around the corner *L*
