Friends and neighbors,

This is it, and I've completely redone it at least twice, to make sure everything's in proper sequence and behaving well, and now playing more test games. The WeiDU log:

There's only one problem with this set-up on my system (why does there always have to be a problem?). I suspect that the JediAndSith mod isn't adding the two kits, but is instead replacing existing kits (VERY BAD!!!). I say this because I can now create a character (and have done so) as a fighter, and give him the Jedi kit, but Deathbringer and Battleguard of Tempus are nowhere to be found in the list of available kits...not even in NearInfinity! This is unacceptable to me, as I have characters who need to have those kits as a vital part of their concepts.

I'm wondering if there's a way to verify my suspicions, and better, if there's a way to modify the mod (or any mod that messes with game elements in this way) so that it adds the content, instead of overwriting existing content. In the case of JediAndSith, nowhere in the documentation does it mention anything about this. It's an interesting concept, this mod, and appeals to me for many reasons, but if I find that I must choose between having it and having access to Deathbringer and Battleguard kits, I'll ditch it.

The major happy point with this latest multi-mod install is that, during character creation, I can select any kittable class, and not get the dreaded CTD, but instead enjoy access to the kits :) My next bold move will be to click the Rest button, and see what happens *L*

I think the wisest thing I did, once I finished installing the mods, was to run testo.tp2 before doing anything else, and after adding some custom items to the override folder. This fixes some problems with the Fire Giants in ToB, and may also fix some other things.

That's my report for the morning. Happy Presidents Day to fellow residents of the States :)

I know that it's usually advised against, but I too have a lot of NPC's installed. My dream is to have a stable installation, just sitting there, allowing me the freedom to start a game with any different party configuration I could imagine whenever the mood strikes me. With that being said, I still end up rebuilding my install every month or so, because of install order issues with things like kits and tweaks.

I don't know the mod in question, but the number of kits available for character creation is limited, so usually every kit mod that offers new PC kits has to replace an existing one, or find some other way to add the kit later in game. (But I should add that I know this only from hearing, since I have no experience with kits at all.)

Would you please indulge my curiosity as to why you are running 19(!) NPC mods at once?

Last time I checked you can only use 5 at a time, and with mod NPCs that's a rather... quiet affair (Crossmod notwithstanding).

It is as Lady Amaurea comments below: I want to be able to mix and match. As for quiet, well...you haven't seen my test games :) Come Chapter 2, if I have Chloe, Yasraena, and Kivan in my party (which is usually the case), they're all VERY talkative! If Aerie's in the party as well (rare, but sometimes I let her tag along for a short time), there's plenty of interaction between her and any or all of the characters mentioned here.

The trouble with having so many mod NPCs available is that it's difficult to decide who's in the party and who's not. I like Chloe, Yasraena, and Auren Aseph very much, but I don't need three warriors in my party all the time, so at least one of these has to sit it out at any given time. It's also difficult at times to decide whether to have Kivan and Kiyone in the same party, though they have plenty of entertaining banter between them. They're both aces with a bow, but a lot of the time I can get by well enough with just one archer. Also, now that I've discovered Silver Star, I might be less inclined to have another thief in the party. Still, I'll experiment with many different party line-ups, not only to see which mix of classes is most effective for various missions, but also to experience all the wonderful banter possibilities :)

The stupid part is that there aren't many fighter kits in the clean install, so why would a mod overwrite any existing kits in that list? Now that I think on it further, JediAndSith might not be overwriting anything. I say this because I installed that mod before installing the one (which mod is it?) that gives the Deathbringer kit, primarily for Sarevok. I'm also not sure about why Battleguard of Tempus cleric kit has vanished, but I do have both Cleric Remix and Semi-Multi Clerics installed...but even so, I've gone with both of these mods before, and never had this problem before. That's why I suspected JediAndSith. Btw, the "real" name of that mod is Jedi&Sith, but I've discovered that the Terminal in OS X doesn't like me to use the "&" symbol as part of a filename, so in that mod I changed every occurance of "Jedi&Sith" to "JediAndSith"...fortunately, it worked :)

I have other issues already with JediAndSith mod, but I'll see if I can address them with the author.

IIRC, only 10 kits max at a time for those classes that offered multiple kits for a class, such as fighters, rangers, rogues, paladins, clerics, bards and mages. The monk, sorcerer, barbarian (:)) and I believe something else are single kit classes.

Also, IIRC, the limit is hardwired into the IE code, so I don't know if there's anything that can be done; I've got a feeling someone would have already done so if it could have been done.

It's an interesting concept, this mod, and appeals to me for many reasons, but if I find that I must choose between having it and having access to Deathbringer and Battleguard kits, I'll ditch it.

Jedi&Sith is not to blame - I checked it out and it simply adds 2 new fighter kits. As far as mods that might overwrite kits or classes: in the case of sane mods, this is done to provide "necessary" features that cannot be gained by normal means, or to purposefully remove the prior kit/class as an option (ie. replacing the old Archer with your Archer). Any mods that do these things should be very clear about it in their documentation, though.

As far as your problem, you should note that Deathbringer is not a PC-gainable kit - it is only for Sarevok. For the Battleguard of Tempus, my first guess would be that you have 10+ cleric kits installed, which might bump it off the list. Branwen should have it regardless of whether your player can select it, though. When you said you checked in NI, were you looking at KITLIST.2DA? If they're not in there, something must have gone wrong with their installations, or a later mod altered the file.

Side note for those interested: you can have more than 10 kits per kittable class and race combination, they just will not all be shown at character creation. You can make kits (which may have some limitations) for monks and sorcerers that will not be shown at character creation, but not barbarians (as they are technically a fighter kit).

Yeah, I started thinking that another mod may be to blame...or rather, my component selections with other mods. I wasn't looking at KITLIST.2DA in NI, so I'll give that a look. Interesting that you should mention Branwen, as I accidentally said yes to give her a Battleguard of Tempus kit. I've never done that before. As for Deathbringer, I've been successful in giving that kit to a character via NI before; it's just that we can't select it at character creation. I'm not sure how many cleric kits I have installed; I try to keep kit additions to a minimum, but I do recall that I added the Selune kit, the Corellon kit, and the Battleguard kit, as those are the only ones I know of that I'd want to use. I've read cautions against adding some of the others, which is a shame, but it does keep one from going hog-wild with installing kits :)

I was gonna ask "If you can't see the kits at character creation, then what's the point in adding them to the game?" but then I realized that you can always go into an editor (NI, in my case) and add/change kits.

In NI, I notice something I haven't seen before: some kits are listed multiple times, and the extra listings have letters at the end of their names. I also noticed that, while I installed Zyraen's Reaver kit (successfully!), it doesn't appear anywhere in the list. Again, this isn't from KITLIST.2DA, but only from the list I get when I click on the kit field in a character's edit window.

Thanks,

Eric

(Hoping another complete install isn't just around the corner...)

That's because it's a "hidden" kit. I forget the specifics, but I believe you have to select a pure-class mage at character creation, and I also think there are some minimum stat requirements for certain things. Anyway, once you enter the game, there's a script you run, then you have to wait a bit, then dual-class to thief. Check the readme, I'm sure it will be a lot more help than I've been :)

I'll read the ReadMe, and I'll check with Zyraen the next time we talk. I haven't tried the kit out yet, as the first time I installed the Miscellany mod, the kit failed to install, but now it installs just fine.

Thanks,

Eric

And now, NI is making a liar outta me! *L* I notice that the list of kits available to a given character (when I'm in the character view/edit window, on the edit side) is different for different characters. I'm not sure what or where the determining factors are. I called up a female Half-Elf Fighter/Cleric. When I click the kit field to see the list of kits available to choose from, "A#Temp" isn't included. That's the Battleguard of Tempus kit. However, when I look in KITLIST.2DA, all the kits (from the clean game as well as from every mod I've installed) appear, with the columns of data following.

I tried changing the Half-Elf's race, class, and gender, but doing any or all of these had no effect on the kits available to the character. I've been able to assign Battleguard of Tempus to this same character before (many installs ago), so I don't know what the deal is now. Perhaps the only solution is to build a new character, make it conform to the Battleguard's prerequisites, then call up the character in NI and change it to the female Half-Elf again. Joy :)

Is there an easier way? Well, at least I now know that all the kits are in there somewhere, right?

The more I think about it, the more I don't ever want to write a mod kit, even one exclusive to a mod NPC *L*

Thanks,

Eric

The dreaded CTD on kittable class select for new characters has returned, but only after I installed a mod on top of what was my golden installation. Still, I can't blame the mod itself, as the game (and NearInfinity) was choking on one of my characters, for some reason. Apparently, I can't have a character with Githyanki designated as its race :) After seeing errors with that, and after installing the mod that adds small portraits to all the various NPCs that didn't have portraits before, I've got the crash again.

Strage exception: I can create a mage, and when I select Mage, it gives me all the mage specialties (I don't want to call them kits) to choose from. With the other classes, though, like Fighter and Ranger, it's boom! I figure the only way to remedy this is to--you guessed it--reinstall all over again, but I've had enough of that for a while *L*
