Upgrading from v4 to v5

Hi DavidW. Thanks for the great mod. I'm about halfway through Ch. 2 using v4, and am enjoying the mod immensely. Never again will I be able to go back to a vanilla game. :suspect:

Anyway, I have a few questions about upgrading to v5 (the answers to which are probably pretty obvious):

1. Can I upgrade mid-game?

2. If so, I assume the correct process would be to uninstall v4, and install v5, correct?

3. Are there any components to v5 that I shouldn't install as part of a mid-game upgrade?

4. I have the Tactics version of Bodhi, but haven't met her yet. Would I be better off uninstalling that and installing your version, or is there any difference (I noticed that the v5 readme says it's from Tactics).

Thanks for your help, and thanks again for a great mod.

I don't think so, though I could have missed something.

My version has a more SCS-style script (so is probably better at detecting party defences, that kind of thing); other than that, it's pretty similar, so it's your call.

Thanks for your help, and thanks again for a great mod.

And thanks for the comments!

OK, now I've got a problem.

I uninstalled the Tactics version of Bodhi, and then tried to uninstall SCS II v4. (In retrospect, it probably would have made more sense to do that in the other order, but I doubt that is what's causing me trouble.) I thought there might have been a global "un-install" option for all of SCS, but it wasn't there.

Anyway, when asked, for each component, I selected (N)ot Inststall or (U)ninstall, as appropriate (i.e. depending on whether I had it installed or not). Everything seemed to go fine, but then after I "Successfully Removed [Move Boo into Minsc's pack]", things went crazy. Several components tried to reinstall, (?) and I got an error message after each that said "component xxx fails component requirements, *not* Re-Installing". Components that this occurred for were 241, 251, 261, 271, 281, 291, 321, 331, and 380. Then it said "Press ENTER to exit", which I did.

So now I'm not sure what to do. I'm not sure if I should re-install v4, or install v5, or try un-installing v4 again. Although my WeiDU log suggests I might be OK to proceed with v5. Any help would be appreciated.

Fortuantely I kept coies of the WeiDU log before and after I tried this whole thing. The pre-un-install WeiDU log (as it applies to SCS only):

Help!! (Please.)

Well, if your WEIDU.log is to be trusted, you don't need to panic: you've actually succeeded in uninstalling all of SCSII. Just install v5 and take it from there.

Heh. The panic part came before I checked the WeiDU log. As I said earlier, from the log, it looked like I might be OK, but I just wanted to confirm. I'll try installing v5 tonight.

Thanks for your help. :suspect:

OK, so I installed v5. Everything went fine except that Smarter Dragons wouldn't install (either option 1 or option 2). The message said to email Setup-SCSII.Debug to xyz. Well, I have the debug file, but who the heck is xyz?

It's me forgetting to put debug details.

What error message did you get?

What error message did you get?

ERROR: Failure<"hdragsil.cre: read out of bounds">

And then it says to email the debug file

Don't bother; I know this one already (more or less). It's a clash with "Revised Hell Trials" in QP - I don't think I ever got to the bottom of the problem, but I think that component corrupts the hdragsil file.

The "Revised Hell Trials" component brings its own version of hdragsil.cre. Now this isn't very mod-friendly, but to be fair, the creature file is valid.

Problem is: The effects offset is zeroed. What happens is that upon installing the "smarter dragons" component, the immunity to blindness effect is written to the start of the file (thus makes it unusable). The next step, granting immunity to some spell, will read garbage from 0x2c4 when determining the eff. offset.

So one should either check for invalid offsets upon applying effects or get Sim to redo Revised Hell Trials. :suspect:

That's quite helpful, thanks. So all I need to do to fix the problem at my end is to correct Sim's offset?

Yes, that's what I think. (But don't sue me if I'm wrong. :suspect:)

Maybe you can add some check in the patching macros that deal with creature effects. If the number of effects is zero and the offset is lower than #some_sane_value_here# then use a different offset. (Maybe the item slots, but I'm not sure if this is guaranteed to be nonzero.)

I'm not an expert on IE modding, so there may be a prefered way of dealing with this kind of problem (zero/invalid offset), that I don't know.

OK well I'm in the same boat, half (quarter) way through a v4 run, and considering an upgrade. I have three questions.

How pear shaped will it go if I install v5 over v4?

All I installed after SCS2 was the tweak pack v6. Can I uninstall SCS2 v4 and then install v5, which will effectively mean SCS2 moves from before the tweak pack to after it?

Also, could you link to your readme so I can torture myself looking at the list of changes between v4 & v5. Apparently some mage script optimization, which would be nice, as the game freezes up for about a second as a handy warning that there's a mage in the area.

Finally, because you can never heap TOO much praise, this is a BRILLIANT mod :)

I don't think it'll do any harm at all.

Yes, that works fine. Uninstall v4, delete it, install v5.

Top left of this page, "completed mods", should take you there.

Sorry, not that sort of optimisation. I can't do much about that one-second thing.

Thank you!
