No Irenicus in Spellhold

Game TOB (patch 26498); fixpack 6; tweakpack 5; DBG; G3TWEAKS

 

Spellhold. You come through the wardstone way (Perth). When you come in AR1515, no Irenicus to welcome you! Doors locked, game stalled.

When I try to walk away to Brynnlaw, something petrifies my heroes from a distance. Viconia dies, then the PC, game over.

 

The Desharik way (being admitted) is still OK.

I'm having a very difficult time seeing how this might have happened.

 

If you recall this long after posting, did you get a warning about shimmering magic when you first crossed over the bridge towards Spellhold? Would you copy and paste the contents of your WeiDU log?

 

Did you use any console commands to skip the walkabout through Brynnlaw?

Alright, thanks.

 

There are a couple of problems with your installation:

 

BG2 Fixpack should go first, or at the very least before tweak mods. It's coded robustly enough that most of it will work correctly if installed out of order, but you're taking a risk.

 

G3 Tweaks has been obsolete for some years now. The Worldmap fixes are folded into the Fixpack, the rest of it is available in BG2 Tweaks (I believe "Solaufein and Valen Style Interjections" is now called "More Interjections" or some such).

 

You may encounter problems also with installing the same component twice:

I can't say for certain that this is causing your difficulties, but it's surely not helping anything.

 

When you carry the Asylum Wardstone out into Brynnlaw, the area script sets a variable "HasAsylumWardstone". This variable is checked to deactivate the nasty repeating petrification traps that killed your character (along with the warning about hazardous shimmering), and is also checked to spawn the Coordinator (the game checks a variable rather than just whether or not you have the Wardstone, because it's consumed by opening the door to Spellhold). In your game something mussed either the setting of this variable or the scripting responses to it - but it's not easy to say what.

I painfully removed all the fixes, then reinstalled in this order:

Fixpack 6

Dungeon Be Gone 1.4

Tweakpack 6

 

And the problem is still there.

 

Edit:

When the party is in AR1500, the variable is set.

But when they open the door, Irenicus is still not there. So, it wouldn't be the variable

The reinstall will pay off in the end, particularly in Ust Natha :laugh:

 

Since you've already checked on the variable, the last remaining likely culprit is ar1515.bcs - if you'd like, copy yours out of your override folder and email it to me (if whatever editing program you're using to browse files will also let you decompile scripts, you could do that as well, or even just open the script with a text editor and paste the contents into a thread here). I'll be happy to take a look.

After re-installing, did you reload a save just before entering AR1515 (the Spellhold building)? Even better, before enter AR1500?

I must confess that up to now, I've only used Shadowkeeper, I'm just a player/user/cheater, up to now.

I'm just a player/user/cheater, up to now.

 

Welcome to being a Fixpack contributor too. It's not all bad.

 

The script is trashed, so it's not a native game bug we need to clear up (this is good). It's looking like the Fixpack was installed twice somehow, thereby causing your difficulties.

 

It may be too late for your convenience, but unrar-ing and dropping this ar1515.bcs into your override will fix it for now.

Reading the BCS code, that nested OR() got in there somehow... maybe Baldurdash was installed first (IIRC, Kevin did the same thing for the fix), or like you say, the fixpack was installed twice or didn't uninstall correctly.

 

We obviously need to be a lot more careful when replacing with our OR()s when things like this start happening.

It may be time to devise a BALDURDASH_IS_IN_THE_HOUSE predicate. Check for the whacked out Protection from Fire or Azuredge or something.

 

The real fix for this one is

REPLACE_ACTION_TEXT ppdesh ~SetGlobal("PirateAsylum","GLOBAL",11)~ ~SetGlobal("PPdeshSend","GLOBAL",1)~

- but auditing the script patches is on the menu too.

 

Won't that be nice.

This particular bug was if PPdeshSend was 1 but you didn't actually get sent (you walked in), so Desharik's dialogue changes shouldn't have any effect (even if he was setting the right variables for all the transitions to Spellhold, there's at least one case in there where you can still flip him the bird and just hoof it to the asylum).

 

I don't remember how/why it occurred (I don't think I ever even looked; adding the OR() is easy enough not to bother trolling for the actual bug).

Let me phrase that a little less arrogantly :laugh:

 

I'd rather not REPLACE_TEXTUALLY into an OR() if we can help it, and we can - one of the three exits from fully patched ppdesh.dlg is missing the variable set, so if we add it there we can skip the rest of the malarkey.

 

If removing the useless PirateAsylum variable is going to break Tortured Souls or something, we can leave it - I'm just looking for more cautious ways to do this that don't involve accounting for every patch in Baldurdash.

BCS patching is something that isn't ever going to work right, huh?

 

APPLY_BCS_PATCH_OR_REPLACE_BCS_BLOCK_OR_OVERWRITE_OR_JUST_ADD_SOME_RANDOM_STUFF added for v207. :D

Synonym BREAK_BCS_FILE for those who hate to type. ;-)
