Kuo Toa lair unreachable

Recommended Posts

OK. My party is in underdark right now, and I have enjoyed your mod greatly so far. I always liked SCS I for TuTu, so it was no suprise that I liked SCS II too.

However, I can not reach Kuo Toa lair in the Underdark. When I try to enter the area by the western corridor in the main Underdark map, it autosaves, but returns to desktop in the loading screen. I tried again and again and it always does this.

I think either the area or some creature files are corrupted. I have battled the Kuo Toas in the Underdark and they were pretty normal. I think Prince may be the culprit, maybe its CRE file is corrupted, somehow?

Here is my Weidu log, it is big and ugly and scary, I know, but there have been no problems up to now!

PS:Improved Undead works just fine since I installed it after SCS II. Just so you know.

Any help to my predicament is appreciated however, I think I may need uncorrupted CRE or AREA files. Can someone send me these?

TIA.

I did not know that not having Fixpack could lead up such a game-stopper bug. (NOT quite, I know, but now I can not forge shiny Crom Faeyr, and I have just given Nathaniel a proficiency in warhammers in his last level up. Which rubs salt to my wound...)

I know however, that I can not install the fix pack right now or it will cause no end to trouble, right? Should I uninstall ALL of the SCS II, get the fix pack, and then reinstall SCS II? Lots of work, I know, but Crom Faeyr is well worth it!

Hmm, do you have any ideas that any other mod on my rather long-winded list could cause such an annoying bug? Maybe SCS II is innocent in this matter. So who is the culprit? And any quick fix (a new, uncorrupted file concerning the Kuo Toa lair, for instance) would be very very appreciated!

Before you start to panic: have you been able to test what happens after the Ust Natha quests? When you give Adalon her eggs back she teleports herself and you right into the Kuo Toa lair, so you can exit the Underdark. If the same happens then, you should be worried.

When I try to enter the area by the western corridor in the main Underdark map, it autosaves, but returns to desktop in the loading screen. I tried again and again and it always does this.

Not sure if this is related to the issue that you're experiencing, but your mod install order is suboptimal to say the least.

In general, it's always a good idea to read through the documentation of a mod and closely follow the instructions listed there before installing it. For example, Rogue Rebalancing has a detailed Compatibility Guide which also contains a recommended install order.

@Arkain

Oh no I totally forgot that, my game will indeed be stuck if I can not fix this little problem! (panick!)

@Taimon

Thank you very much, this is one neat trick I did not know to diagnose the culprit!

My Baldur.err file says:

ASSERTION FAILED!

File: CGameArea.cpp

Line: 5198

Exp: creatureData.GetDataSize()

Msg: Creature file not found UDPRINCE

Run Debugger?

Would you look at this suprising turn of events! UDPRINCE not found! Does this mean 'UnderDark Prince?' The only UnderDark Prince I knew was Kuo Toa one!

Then it is as I suspected! My Kuo Toa Prince file is missing! (I think) I look at creature files via SK to check, there are:kuo toa archer, 3 captains, leader, lieutunant, monitor, 2 priests, 5 warriors, 3 whips, 1 wizard...but no prince!

Help, my prince is missing! What should I do? Can you give me the prince's CRE file? I think it will work if I dump it to my override directory, no?

@aVENGER_(RR)

I know, sorry, but I am a seasoned mod user and have always had a similiar mod installation order. I did not have any bugs up to now. I am terribly sorry for the inconvenience but right now I need your help. I know if I uninstall and reinstall everything, even if in correct order this time, my save games will be quite likely unplayable and I do not wish that, oh no I certainly don't!

Just because you haven't noticed any bugs with that install order doesn't mean that there are none. :laugh: A specific example - installing Ascension after Rogue Rebalancing will definitively mess up the new Detctable Spells which RR uses so its scripts won't work properly. But yes, reinstalling the mods now and keeping your old savegame would probably cause even more trouble. Just keep the recommendations in mind for future use, they do exist for a reason after all. ;)

On topic, it appears that your UDPRINCE.CRE is corrupted. Try moving that file from your override folder to a different location (i.e. My Documents) and then load the game and see if the crash occurs again.

Wahey! It worked like a charm! I just cut the corrupted file out of my override directory, and now Kuo Toa lair is loaded! I CTRL+J ed to the area where I knew Kuo Toa Prince normally was (for test-drive), but could not find him!

I thought I have cut the prince out of my game, but then the monster appeared, he attacked Viccy and hit, but 'his weapon was unsuitable for a backstab'...LOL, so he now uses SCS II's new spiffy stealthy thief script, but since he uses a mundane spear, he is not much of a threat, good ol' Viccy is a strong Malla Drow, can take quite a few spear thrusts, heh heh heh...

Anyway, sorry for the inconvenience again, aVENGER_(RR), ofcourse you know the best since you actually make up the mods we all love to play.

By the by, last time, when I was playing an IA game, your Chosen of the Cyric Encounter has not initiated after I staked Bodhi. So I used a code you gave in a previous thread (I lurk a lot here, hello!) to start it...The battle was intense and fun, and I did not notice any serious stupid behaviour.

My IA game was abandoned as my party felt unnaturely strong and overpowered at the start of the ToB. Such powerful items seemed cool at first but then I noticed the game has started to lose its authentic BG2 atmosphere.

So I decided to try new spiffy SCS II this time (after uninstalling the IA first, ofcourse.) I loved it! Especially when my items were taken away in Spellhold, that was the most interesting and exciting idea! Add the fact that I had the cool beyond words 'Improved Asylum' mod...which seriously upgrades Umber Hulk pen, adds two crazy mages there, and THREE liches in the library next to each other...

I managed to beat all those scary, uber powerful and ridiculously deadly Noble Umber Hulks in the pens, with only crappy items I was able to loot from here an there...and it was the greatest satisfaction of my entire BG game playing experience, I can tell!

I also killed two liches (they can now be Breached! YAY!) and had to flee the last one when he pulled off a Planetar...This was all too fun! Oh, also, thanks to UB, Bodhi assaulted me with her gang each time I rested, and I had only the crappy weapons...Ancient Vampires using Bat Clouds thanks to your mod...They really really gave me the creeps, but by chance and clever tactics (and lots of spell casting here and there) I was victorious!

Spellhold has never been so much fun, dangerous and challenging! This is achieved by Improved Asylum, Unfinished Bussiness, and SCS II's very little but very, very clever tweak! Kudos on that!

Anyway, don't get me wrong, I love IA's modifications too, and will play its next version after I am done with this run of SCS II. (after uninstalling SCS II first, ofcourse, by switching between these two mods, the game will feel entirely different each time! And hopefully, other's new version will be available when I finish one.)

Oww, look at the time, I seem to be prone to rambling. Sorry. Just was too excited and all.

@aVENGER_(RR)

Thank you very much once again for the solution, friend. I know seem to avoid the nasty bug. But, what did I just do? By deleting the corrupted file, I mean...The Prince was still in my game. Will there be any other such problems in the future? ...at least, I know where to ask!

Thank you very much to all other people here too! You are too kind to try to find a solution to my problem in such a short amount of time. You guys just saved my game.

I also wish all of you happy gaming and (in case of our dear modders) modding, I guess!

Silly message when you're using a spear, isn't it. I mean, what do you usually do with a spear? You stab people! They should be eminently suited to backstabbing.

Granted, hiding a spear about your person in public is rather more difficult. But that's really a separate matter.

But, what did I just do? By deleting the corrupted file, I mean...The Prince was still in my game. Will there be any other such problems in the future? ...at least, I know where to ask!

You reverted the creature to the default, unmodified version in the original game files (ie. archived inside data/creature.bif, probably). But any scripts, items et al he's using are still modified since they still are in the override.

Known issue. There's a bug in the unmodded game which prevents the graveyard area script from running properly. The G3 BG2 Fixpack resolves the issue but Baldurdash unfortunately does not. So, if you were using the latter, the CoC encounter couldn't start automatically. Anyway, I'm glad you liked the battle. :laugh:

As Erik said, by deleting that file you merely reverted the creature to its original state from the unmodded game. Doing that shouldn't cause any problems.
