weird time stop issue

Well, I've just installed SCSII, and everything seems to be working fine, save for the Time Stop spell, which in about 80% of the instances it's cast seems to do nothing. The spell is cast as normal, but then a cloud of black smoke appears next to the caster, and well, time keeps flowing as normal. This issue affects both the party and NPCs (the Fire Lich fails miserably at casting working Time Stops too). Note that the "black smoke" effect appears when the spell works as intended, as well.

I know the Smarter Mages component includes modifications of the Time Stop effect, and it used to work right before I installed the mod, so...

Also, and as an aside. Are gated demons really supposed to attack each other? I know this is how it used to be in vanilla BG2, but I never found that to make much sense to begin with...

Thanks.

I can't reproduce your problems with Time Stop - it works just fine on my install, for PCs and monsters both. (The black cloud is part of SCSII - it's an invisible creature summoned by the Timestop spell, and I've never got around to working out how to hide its summoning animation).

Baatezu (including the Pit fiends summoned by Gate) are supposed to attack tanar'ri (including the Glabrezu summoned by Summon Fiend, and the Nabassu summoned by Cacofiend). I do try to avoid both being present in a single encounter, though - wizards who cast Gate shouldn't subsequently cast Summon Fiend until the Pit Fiend dies, for instance.

I have observed occasional problems with multiple wizards - if one casts Gate when the other one is casting Summon Fiend, for instance. The only concrete instance of this that I'm aware of is the Twisted Rune; this is fixed in v7.

Thanks for the quick reply.

Probably my disorderly BG2&mods installation is behind it. I tried removing SPWI909.SPL from the override folder, and the spell seems to work fine now. Can you say what the effects of using the unmodded, vanilla version of the spell will be on gameplay with your mod?

As for the fiends thing, well. They go at each other, regardless of being tanar'ri or baatezu. Nabassu will attack Nabassu, and Pit Fiends don't seem to play with others very well either. This is with all fiends being gated in by the same caster, btw. I take it by your comment that this isn't how it's supposed to work, either.

Oh well, it seems a clean install is in order...

Forgot to say in my first post, pretty cool mod. I especially like how you've managed to stay legit with the changes, I hated how Tactics didn't even make an effort to conceal cheating. Keep it up!

Well, basically my modifications just make it easier for the game to know when a timestop is running. Without them, mages will generally assume they're not in a timestop (actually, they'll recognise the first round of it, but not subsequent rounds).

For most creatures, this won't have a dramatic effect - they'll make a few spell choices that are a bit suboptimal, like casting spells at someone they've already Imprisoned, but nothing disastrous. The only place where really silly things will happen (I suspect) is where someone has more than one timestop memorised. Then they'll probably cast the second timestop too soon.

No, it's not. That's either a weird incompatibility, or some kind of glitched install.

... oh, wait a second. I don't know for sure what would happen if the player summoned two fiends. It's possible they might go for each other. It shouldn't happen with enemy-summoned or randomly encountered fiends, though.

I think that's probably a good idea. If the problems recur on your new install, let me know and I'll see if i can track down the problem.

Thank you! It's not quite 100% legit but it's at least 98%, I think...

In DLTCEP add NONE to VVC (2. resource) field at the dw#time.eff.

Hooray. Thanks, much obliged. (It didn't occur to me that the engine would treat None differently from just a zero, but you're right: it does.)

I just wanted to drop in to say that I fixed the Time Stop issue. Apparently it had been caused by installing v6 on top of v5, as opposed to full uninstall of v5 + clean v6 install.

That's what I get for being lazy, I guess...

Regarding the fiends thing, I have observed no unusual behavior on fiends whatsoever, outside that of summoned (by the party) ones. Not "odd" per se, as it's what the game has always been doing, but rather silly, as demons seem to teamwork well enough by themselves when encountered by the player in other instances. Probably nothing to do with the mod, at any rate.

Great - glad to hear it's sorted.
