Loading Troubles

Hey-

 

Are any mod combinations known to cause loading troubles? Currently the game freezes on load occasionally but I can force-quit and re-open and the area will load just fine.

 

Unfortunately, BG2 always fails to load the first Saemon Havarian area (just before getting on the boat) after the Irenicus/Imoen cutscene. Could this be a mod problem, or is it an install problem?

It would significantly help if you posted your weidu log. To do this, go to the folder where you installed Baldur's Gate (TOB) and open the file called WeiDU.log. Copy paste it's content here. It would also help if you told us which official patches you have installed.

First, let me say I'm no modder, so I'd wait to see a few more replies before following my advice

Having said that, I'd start by removing some of the more unfamiliar sounding mods a.k.a

I decided to rollback to vanilla and re-install the mods. The immediate result is that there are "correct" comments in the WeiDU log file, as in

as opposed to

??? -> :

 

although it appears the comments disappear as I move the .tp2 and .debug files for the installed mods themselves into a subfolder (aptly named "MODS_IN_HERE"), so I'm not sure the question-markes are a sign of install problems. It probably would help to know I'm using OSX.

Bit of an update:

 

I reverted to an unmodded version and re-installed all the mods and have the same problems recurring. The first is an occasional fatal hang during loads. The second is a pathfinding issue where, spontaneously, each character finds itself unable to traverse more than very short distances (otherwise they don't move even on a click).

 

Likely it's an install problem, don't you think? Although I'm worried that it's a problem with the discs themselves; is there some way to check?

This is definitely part of your problem at least. All the ?? results from having deleted or moved the initial mod install files without actually having uninstalled the mods via their WeiDU installers. It normally isn't a great idea to do this while mods are still installed.

 

If you think there's also an issue with the install media, it's pretty easy to tell by looking at the underside of the disks. Minor dirt and scratches you can usually remove with a non-abrasive cloth or tissue. Bigger scratches you can get off with a descratching device or CD cleaner, which you can usually find for cheap at audio, computer and office supply stores.

This sounds like the Mac problem of running dual processors on a fast computer. Setting a single processor minimizes the problem.

This is yet another Mac quirk. I've heard that it doesn't happen with the 2.1 version of TOB for Macs.

It doesn't actually break anything to move or delete the install files. However, you will receive significantly less help with problems if your WeiDU.log is filled with question marks.
