Guest Poetic Infinity Engine Posted January 2, 2009 Posted January 2, 2009 Or is there already a mod that enhances the spells? I love Crpg's but one thing that I always had issue with was spells and their durations. For example, spells that last for 2 rounds, or one round/level are either worthless or have severely limited utility due to the nature of a computer game. In pen and paper, yes, I understand how these short duration spells can be useful, but on a computer, things are different (duh!): the battles flow by much more quickly, and chaotically; sometimes your charname is at an awkward angle; when you pre-buff outside of battle, spells last less longer than when you cast them in combat (I'm not sure if this is fact or if it's just my perception) all these things combine to make short duration spells less useful on a computer than in P&P, and I'm not sure why game development companies don't take these things into consideration as opposed to following the rule book to a T. For example, NWN made up the parrying skill to take into account the fact that it was a computer game and not PnP. Why not enhance the duration of spells to accomodate for the quirks that can affect duration in a computer game ? Aside from duration, there is also implementation. Because characters in computer games level so quickly compared to PnP , many spells lose their usefulness, and don't scale at a good enough pace with the character. Since character level faster, enemies increase in difficulty faster, and the spells simply don;t keep up fast enough with this high pace. This is why spells like goodberry are practically useless in a computer game compared to its PnP counterpart.
Icendoan Posted January 2, 2009 Posted January 2, 2009 Yes, it is very easy to alter the duration of various effects. It takes a few clicks in Near Infinity or DLTCEP. Icen

Icen Duration is just one of the things I mentioned though; in my OP, I gave some reasons why spells become less useful in a computer format, compared to PnP. I was hoping for more of a general discussion about the utility (or lack thereof) of spells in a computer game (particularly these Infinity Engine games), and if there could be a mod to improve and enhance them.
Icendoan Posted January 2, 2009 Posted January 2, 2009 Well, have you tried Spell Revisions, which makes them a lot more interesting. Icen
Guest Poetic Infinity Engine Posted January 2, 2009 Posted January 2, 2009 Well, have you tried Spell Revisions, which makes them a lot more interesting. Icen Woah, I never tried that mod. I'm very glad to see I wasn't the only person who was thinking along these lines. It seems like he was a bit too conservative with his improvements though. The healing spells, for example, could use some better scaling.
Icendoan Posted January 2, 2009 Posted January 2, 2009 It is hard to balance something and not go completely overboard. See Improved Anvil. It is an Item Upgrade Mod. I think healing spells are much better now, as some are faster, some, more powerful ones, are a little slower. Icen
