Disease/Regeneration Question

Opcodes #78 and #98 both have the following comment in the IESDP: "Permanent timing modes require a duration for this effect to work."

 

This says to me that permanent timing modes will work, but there's a trick to it. In my experience, timing mode 9 (Perm After Death) doesn't work for regeneration when applied by a spell (SPL). I know external effects (EFF) have extra variables and such available (e.g. Param 3). Do I need to apply the effect by EFF or is the comment misleading (i.e. permanent timing modes don't work at all)?

They work, but you still need to set the duration field.
