I really am feeling like exploring all sorts of paths with Gavin and believe it or not I want to be, just this once, a bit nasty to him. I really need a sort of walkthru on how to -----------------

Have Gavin give me the finger. So to speak. How bad to I have to be? What do I say? How often? I will only be mean to him this once but I tried to be slightly insulting this time around and it wasn't enough. I didn't get the finger.

Gosh I know this sounds sick but I am so curious I just have to try this path.

First of all, don't be too nasty to him or he'll break up with you. You need to keep that offense level down, because getting him to mutilate himself is going to cause it to go up a little bit.

You need to have slept with Gavin. He's doing it because he wants to reassure you that he won't be breaking any more promises.

It starts in lovetalk 22, "When shall we marry?" There are a couple of different ways to get this conclusion; this just one of them. It is very difficult to get to this conclusion, though, so I'm going to give you all the PC replies you need to get there. I'm going to leave out Gavin's lines so there's at least *some* surprise.

Gavin: ~So, dear one, when shall we be wed?~

PC: ~Tomorrow sounds good.~

PC: ~You aren't backing out on me, are you?~

PC: ~All right, then.~

PC: ~No.~

PC: ~As soon as we can get to a temple. Gavin, I simply will not wait. You weasel out of promises too easily.~

PC: ~I would hold something of yours in trust against the fulfilment of your promise. Give me the one thing that you value above all others to keep until we are wed.~

PC: ~I know you, Gavin. Your possessions mean nothing to you, except for that ring. Nothing else will do.~

PC: ~Would you really cut off your own finger to please me?~

PC: ~Prove it.~

PC: ~*remain silent*~

***MORE SPOILERS BELOW***

In BG2, you can specify whether or not Gavin cut off his finger in BG1, but doing so will also establish the fact that you knew him in BG1 and that you were engaged in BG1. When you meet him, he'll have a missing finger, and it's mentioned once or twice in dialogue. For example, Keldorn and Gavin are bantering about scars and Gavin will claim that most of his were the result of his own clumsiness. When Keldorn asks about the hand, he'll say that it was self-inflicted. Personally, I'm planning on taking that route myself during testing.

OK, that's it for the spoilers. Have fun. :)

Oh, wow, I did it! It was sooooo hard to do, but I did it. I'm glad to experience this path just once and am intrigued by what you will have (as you mentioned above the path you will take during testing) so I'll have to try that too.

I also made another prior save out of guilt so I don't have him do that. But I just had to, once. Gah, I sound like I'm in a confessional!

Kudos to you, Berelinde, for making me really feel and care for a character you made. What a great job and thanks again so very very much!

What a horrible, sick and evil thing to do to poor Gavin!!

Of course I had to see it. :p Gavin's a rather intense fellow underneath, isn't he?

I don't have the heart to continue the game from this path, so I was wondering, does this have any other implications to the rest of the game, except raising Gavin's offense level? I could imagine Reed giving me a piece of her mind at the wedding...

Well, everybody in the part reacts to the actual event, but you already know that. Apart from that, no, or at least not until you get to BG2. I never thought to have Jolun comment on it if you meet him in Baldur's Gate, and that might be a bit odd, but most of tha dialogue is presumed to happen once the PC goes to bed, so maybe they talked about it then.

In BG2, when you find the PC's engagement ring in Irenicus' dungeon, you have the opportunity to say that you wonder what happened to the "other ring," and doing so will result in Gaivn only having nine fingers, but by that point, he's already past whatever emotional trauma he suffered at the time, so offense doesn't rise again.

In BG2, one or two of the BioWare NPCs mention it, and Lanie will ask him what happened to his hand (he lies), and you can bring it up yourself in player-initiated dialalogue, but that's about it. Any NPCs who knew him in BG1 already know what happened, and any new ones probably wouldn't remark on it. Scars are part of life for an adventurer, so it's unlikely that anybody would think it strange.

Okay, thanks.

BTW, when I first read the op's question on how to get Gavin "give me the finger", the first thought that came to my head was: "Wait, what? If you get real nasty to Gavin, he's going to flip you off?!" :p
