Miloch
Not even to make the text identical to the actual voiceover? Not unless there's some fundamental difference, no.Um, why not exactly? The difference between a voiced "that" and "who" is pretty "fundamental" I think. Not to mention grammar nazis would consider the latter "more correct" though I wouldn't change it for that reason alone (but I definitely would if it matched the voicing). Link to comment
Igneous
Oh! I made a mistake: I forgot about posting the accompanying WAV sound in square brackets for voiced lines. Sorry about that. I've corrected the code in my post above. Does it matter whether empty square brackets are appended after non-voiced strings? Link to comment
Igneous
Some more strings. Most of these ones concern dear Orc Ano. Feedback and opinions are most welcome. My correction to #70254 may be of particular interest: the change of structure is probably far too drastic. It is consistent, however, with vanilla stylistics. Wisp
Does this existence of "junk" affect the game in any way (cf. obsessive cleaning of the override, which DavidW eschews)? Or do you mean junk, as in changes for the worse? I guess most of the junk is stuff you wouldn't notice (at least not without a keen eye). But that's another problem with the GTU: the changes are not documented so you don't really know what it does. What the junk does do is make it harder to work with the GTU. It's obviously more difficult to review a GTU consisting of more than 11000 strings (many/most of which make pointless changes like adding or removing spaces, when the text is inconsistent both before and after) than one consisting of ~1500 strings. Screwing around with the override is not a comparable problem. Then, of course, the GTU makes some style or form changes that some people find unwarranted and/or detrimental, such as adding a long list of kits to the "not usable by:" section of item descriptions. As for how the GTUL is better, once this next update goes in I'd say the GTUL will more comprehensive than the GTU. Maybe it already is, if you do not count the item descriptions. Does it matter whether empty square brackets are appended after non-voiced strings? No, unvoiced strings do not need square brackets. Some more strings. Most of these ones concern dear Orc Ano. Igneous
Thank you. I'll try to look it over soon-ish. Whenever you get the time. By the way, I haven't been checking whether my corrections overlap with that of GTU Classic. (All the errors and discrepant voice-overs that I've encountered are derived from a GTUL'ed installation.) The process is painstaking enough, really, without having to engage in a game of spot the difference, as is the case, unfortunately, when working with GTUC's TRA file. I hope this doesn't cause any problems. On the subject of the addition of 'Matching VO'-type revisions to GTUL, one argument for their inclusion is that they open the extra dialogue and ad-libbed improvisations made by the voice actors to hearing-impaired players; and, also, to those who play without sound. I know of at least one such player on the BioWare forums. It can also be somewhat jarring when playing when a voice-over differs markedly from that of the adjoining string. Of course, it depends on the extremity of the departure, but #56473, for example, has always stood out to me and broken my immersion whilst playing. (The string is detailed in my first post on the previous page, for those interested.) Link to comment

Wisp
Here are most of the strings I'd put up for inclusion (to date). Comments? There are a fair number of item descriptions that are factually incorrect but which are not included in this list. To be consistent with the rest of the game and with the rest of the Fixpack some items would need to be changed to fit the description (rather than the description being changed to fit the item) and I was sorting out what was what when I suddenly took a break (currently ongoing). I hope this doesn't cause any problems. Overlap with the GTUC? I can't imagine it would. 619 @1000619 //THACO->THAC0 857 @1000857 //"STATISTICS"->"STATISTICS:" 892 @1000892 //STATISTICS 2309 @1002309 //STATISTICS 3043 @1003043 //thaco 4668 @1004668 //as if a door Igneous
Phew. I gave all your strings a look, Wisp. There are a few I things I would point out. 4668 @1004668 //as if a door were 39622 @1039622 //Thac0, "he or she were a flesh eating demon" 48576 @1048576 //as if a door were The usage of 'were' in the corresponding strings... #4668: You turn the wheel with all your strength. From the west you hear a loud creaking as if a door were being closed.#39622: [...] Any creature hit by the rod must make a saving throw vs. spells or flee in terror, fearing the wielder as if he or she were a flesh eating demon from the Abyss. [...] #48576: You turn the wheel with all your strength. From the west you hear a loud creaking as if a door were being opened. ... is actually grammatically correct, to the best of my knowledge. This kind of usage is not very commonplace in everyday English, though. It may be a more archaic form, perhaps. 7347 @1007347 //"on the hills"->"in the hills", "the two fast became friends"->"the two quickly became friends", thaco "The two fast became friends" is also correct, I think. 7375 @1007375 //STATISTICS For this string, you could also correct "Equipped Ability : increases movement rate" to "Equipped Ability: Increases movement rate", in line with changes you've made to #7818, #39519, etc. This is also consistent with other vanilla item descriptions. 61598 @1061598 //STATISTICS, "forged the by the"->"forged by the" There's actually yet another mistake in this string: "where is was forged" -> "where it was forged". 8904 @1008904 //thaco This string is also missing a full stop: "this item on their own Once the poison is used" -> "this item on their own. Once the poison is used". 22262 @1022263 //thaco Typo. (22262 -> 22263) 30461 @1039461 //thaco Typo. (30461 -> 39461) 39512 @1039512 //thaco, "in the Elven Court"->"at the Elven Court" Hmm. I'm not sure about the correction to grammar, here. I think the original wording is fine, but it's not a huge deal, in any case. Other than that, though, everything looks great. Well done! Wisp
4668 @1004668 //as if a door were 39622 @1039622 //Thac0, "he or she were a flesh eating demon" 48576 @1048576 //as if a door were grammatically correct Ah yes, the imperfect subjunctive thing. Sneaky. I'll drop #4668 and #48576 and and alter #39622 to only correct the bit about eating flesh. 7347 @1007347 //"on the hills"->"in the hills", "the two fast became friends"->"the two quickly became friends", thaco "The two fast became friends" is also correct, I think. 39512 @1039512 //thaco, "in the Elven Court"->"at the Elven Court" Hmm. I'm not sure about the correction to grammar, here. I think the original wording is fine, but it's not a huge deal, in any case. In the spirit of not making spurious changes I'll drop the fast->quickly and in->at changes. Added. 8904 @1008904 //thaco This string is also missing a full stop: "this item on their own Once the poison is used" -> "this item on their own. Once the poison is used". Turns out I corrected that but neglected to document it. Oops. 22262 @1022263 //thaco Typo. (22262 -> 22263) 30461 @1039461 //thaco Typo. (30461 -> 39461) Oh yeah, I should have mentioned I hadn't yet checked for mistakes like that (the publicly available GTUL has been checked). Thanks for looking it over. Link to comment

I don't think so, but I think it was supposed to be "the two became fast friends". Link to comment

As such we can't say the original sentence is incorrect, regardless of how peculiar it may sound. Link to comment
Miloch
Igneous is correct that "fast" can be used as an adverb."Fast asleep" maybe, but I really doubt "fast" is supposed to modify "became" in this context, or even that that's grammatically correct if it did. I read the whole string and "fast friends" makes a lot more sense anyway, in context. Link to comment
Dakk
I thought exactly the same as Miloch regarding "fast friends". Link to comment
