Be like Gorion

Hey, this is my first post on this forum so hopefully I have it located in the right place. (its long)

 

First off, I am highly inept at any form of coding or modding, I simply do not have the expertise or experience/time to learn. I have spent a few hours searching google for a very simple but unsuccessful way in reaching my request.

 

The first time I played BG many years ago when the over-sized skull box of Baldur's gate was still in video game stores. I played this game and within the first three minutes after creating my mage, I casted a magic missile to slay my first would-be assassin in Candlekeep and immediately fell in love with the spellcasting system, not long after as my known stepfather Gorion was also a mage, and taking my deep into the forest outside Candlekeep we meet an unfortunate unarmored figure. It is in this cutscene Gorion displays a truly remarkable display of magic prowess.

 

After watching this I set out to be just like him, I never looked at any sites or even knew they existed back then for this game, I was really young as well, I played and played the game, searching every dungeon, every item, every corner and lore to do with Elminster or facts about Gorion throughout the game with no avail to my one goal. Then Baldur's gate two came out, and lone behold, Jon irenicus, another sight to my one true-goal, I searched everything and everywhere, until eventually I came to the one thing I finally wanted the first half hour in first game when I seen gorion, and this would be known as Improved Alacrity. Although not quite as I imagined it.

 

It was a real let down for me, and also after playing through the entire game understandable that we would never be able to be able to cast spells like Gorion, or Jon Irenicus with no delay between rounds as it would just be too powerful to have it any other time than a short-burst with improved alacrity, a sighing level 10 so close to perfection spell.

 

What I request should actually be pretty simple I think to add? I am unsure how difficult it is to create items. I looked briefly at shadowkeeper but I think this only supports BG2 item creation. I looked at your guys site and you have two mods that increase the difficulty of BG2, AND BG1. I know permanent alacrity can be real cheese probably even still with these mods installed. But I have a great desire to play the game again (So far I have beaten all of BG with a mage, and also a paladin, always solo.******* (SPOILER BG2: TOB) *****8 Though I was only able to beat that certain someone in BG2 at the very end, whos name started with an M with my paladin, I always play solo, and quite frankly it was the most difficult thing I have ever done, I did it with no cheese, all ingame items and no mods, which I doubt even a mage could do with permanent alacrity, although with enough planning and potions.. maybe lol.

 

What I propose as this is the only thing that will make BG2 replayable for me. Is to add one of two items, ANOTHER SPOILER (Although anyone who doesnt know this and is posting here I don't know how you wouldnt know this) .......... On Gorions corpse I believe he has, 2 or 3 items, a book for you, a dagger, and a ring. What I propose is I don't know if its even possible in BG1, but to modify either the book, or the ring, or add another book, that has a few attributes to it, one, adds the effect like Improved alacrity while you wear the ring and try to make it hmmmm, balanced even though I know its unbalanced... I know this don't worry, but try to make it less cheese like for ex.

 

First mod on the ring, adds the IA-like effect while you wear it

Can reduce Stats, say in the description the Intellectual concentration required to hold this ring is like containing a second mind, thereby reducing certain attributes like intel or wisdom or dexterity, make it a curse item, this item will never come off, once you wear it its there from the forest to the end of tob. This is Gorions heirloom because if you were like a son to him, why would he not bestow the secret of his spellcasting prowess to his adopted child he loved so much. I also plan to play this with a certain rule in mind, and possibly also something that can be edited in. ABSOLUTELY NO SPELLCASTING TIME RECUCING ITEMS ALLOWED, for ex. Amulet of power. So in said mod, if possible remove this attribute from the amulet of power, or I will just simply not wear it, I for one actually like the 1 second effect it takes to cast my magic missile for ex. I don't want to be able to time-stop, and cast 50 billion spells with no spellcasting time

 

Or add this item as a tome of power like those attribute boosting tomes. A one time read use item that boosts your character permanently like the attributes.

 

Call it something like The master book of magery, a tome passed down from Gorion from some well thought of lore or Item description, which had an incantation on it to be something plain and useless to anyones eyes but yourself, which is why Sarevok would never have taken it from his corpse. That he hoped to pass it down to you when he believed you were ready or only in dire circumstances that your heritage caught up with you in order to protect you, say him and Elminster were able to forge such an item.. and Gorion being desperate brought it with him I'm not sure something! I'm not the storywriter just trying to explain what I really want sorry if this post is Huge!!! If your actually reading this far thanks alot is all I can say.

 

I don't want spellcast failure or something else added to this, I realise I will be much more powerful than I should be even without spellcast time reduction items like the amulet of power, this is solely because one, I like to play solo, and I want to play something difficult like these tactic mods I here about, and go as far as I can. I really wish to be able to cast spells like gorion and irenicus, and if possible it doesnt matter, MAKE other mages in the game able to cast like this as well, even if its impossible to beat the game without a party thats fine, or evenwith one, Thats fine too. PS. This effect I really want it for BG1 as well, I know IA isnt in BG1, but gorion casted spells fast somehow, if its possible, then that is truly awesome thanks alot.

IIRC, Mike1072 had a small mod that introduced two spellcasting rings, one of which provided the specific effect you're looking for. I'd direct you to the link, but Geocities is closed now.

Yes, my first mod ever, and surprisingly popular....

 

It's definitely unpolished, but it should do what you want, and provide a template if you wish to expand upon it. The package is now hosted on my personal site here.

 

Edit: I don't think it's possible to do something like this for vanilla BG1, but the mod should work on BG2 and the BG1 conversions: BGT and (Easy)Tutu.

MARW401.spl includes an improved alacrity effect in BG1.
