bug with money asked by Gaelan Bayle

Recommended Posts

In my most recent BGII install, I wanted to increase the amount of money asked by Gaelan Bayle (erroneously spelled as Gaylan Baele by the mod) to 40.000 xp. But when I start the dialogue with him, instead of his question for the amount of money, a blank line appears in the dialogue box, i.e.: no question from Gaelan if I'm willing to pay to get help, just the answers I can choose, without the question asked first. There's no journal entry either after 'he has lead me to his home [...] where we might discuss an offer for aid'...

Without the money being mentioned, I'm not feeling confident I can continue the game past chapter 2.

Is there some component I installed that was incompatible and caused this bug?

Is there a reason why you uninstalled the same component ? And did this already happen on the first run ? If you did try it there.

The reason why I ask is that there maybe have been something going off in the uninstall ... that's might have caused something.

I don't know if anything can be done without restarting your game at this point. Reinstalling components mid game more often than not causes problems, especially with the text. Your next play through should be fine though.

The problem surfaced on the first run, that's why I tried re-installing this component, but that didn't work.

I intend to start over, I won't continue this one, but re-install the game (doesn't take too long going through Irenicus' dungeon again). But I hope you can help me find out what to different when I re-install SOA.

The first time I played SOA a year ago, this bug happened as well, and I tried a reinstall with some differences - problem is, I can't remember WHAT I did differently to get it right, as I didn't make note of it.

P.S.: thanks for replying so quickly

After you have uninstalled the game, remember to remove the game folder, as the files left in the game folder will effect the game even after reinstall.

Could it be I caused the bug by leaving the WeiDu-log open during install? I remember opening it to check something, then leaving it accidentaly open when continuing installing mods and thinking oops, this is not right probably?

I am used to starting new campaigns by copy-pasting the contents of a clean install I always keep (de-installing that clean install will cause problems for other campaigns I keep, I fear), but I will try making a completely new clean install by using the GOG-installer I bought. My old 'clean install' turned out not to be completely clean (it had 2 auto-saves and 2 quicksaves from testing, as well as a cache-folder with .bif-files in it).

Should you know, if you want to, you can keep the old data...

You first copy the entire game folder to somewhere, then you go and uninstall the game, clean the game directory, or not and then you reinstall to somewhere else... and then you just restore the copied folder to where it was and always use the specific game folders BGMain.exe/quick icons made from them(yes, that's plural as each game folder has their own BGMain.exe & quick icon made from it to the desktop) to start each specific game.

My method is to copy-paste the entire folder of a clean install, paste it to a different location and go on with modding the pasted folder. But in the baldur.ini file I forgot to change the line HD0:=G:\Black Isle\Baldurs Gate II GOG.com\ (the clean install) into HD0:=G:\Black Isle\BGII - Eriodal\ (the game I want to play). Without doing that, the game, though started with G:\Black Isle\BGII - Eriodal\bgmain.exe, still looked (at least in some cases) to G:\Black Isle\Baldurs Gate II GOG.com\override for its data and thus couldn't find the text by Gaelan Bayle - at least, that's what I think after re-installing the game and again getting the bug.

It's a stupid error, I admit, as changing the HD0= line in the baldur.ini is the first thing I do when modding a copy of the game - and now I forgot.
