ravenwind286 Posted October 24, 2011 Posted October 24, 2011 I am sorry if I am asking anything that has already been asked elsewhere, but it has been a long time since I have played many of the infinity engine games, and I am really looking to get back into them. However, I have tried searching Google for an up to date list of installation orders, but to no avail. As such, I had questions about three games in particular, Icewind Dale, BG1 and BG2, all of which I have recently purchased from the Good Old Games website. For Icewind Dale one, I am guessing all I would need to install would be the fixpack from this site, as well as the widescreen mod if I so desired, and then would be all set? For BG2, I planned to use the fixpack here, but was curious if it had things such as fixes to Elf or Half Elf immunities? If not, are there any other fixes recommended? Lastly, for Baldur's Gate 1, in the past I had used Kevin Dorner's fixpack, as well as Dudley fix, and a racial traits fix, but would currently like to know what is recommended to be used for fixes today. Any help is greatly appreciated, even if it is just a link to another post or website that I may have missed. Thank you all for your time, hoping to get back in and to enjoy these games once again.
plainab Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 for bg1 it is fine to use baldurdash (Kevin Dorner's fixes). Personally, I'd steer clear of Dudleyville fixes simply because it can get confusing as to what is a 'fix' and what is a tweak to his personal play style. There is a fixpack that (I started on but dropped and recently picked back up) which intends to include versions of baldurdash fixes (though maybe not done the same way) as well as other necessary fixes that may or may not be located in Dudleyville or other sources. A new version is currently being tested for installation as well as content. Can't say as to when it will be available since an entire game pretty much has to be played... The previous version of if you'd wish to try it can be downloaded from here For a more full and rounded game play, I'd recommend Unfinished Business as it gives some resolution to otherwise blah endings. Also, they provide some 'fixes' that have and have not been addressed in the linked fix pack. For IWD I'd suggest you try the fixpack, unfinished business, G3Dale Tweaks (if interested), Item Upgrade for Icewind Dale(if interested), and IWDNPC (if interested) IWDNPC is cool because it gives you 5 characters to add to your party of 6 each with their own dialog, banter and soundsets... its the closets you could get to having all the BG2 party character interaction in an IWD game given the limitation of such in the IWD game.
ravenwind286 Posted October 26, 2011 Author Posted October 26, 2011 Thank you for your response, it is much appreciated, good to have an idea of how to get things up and running again . Was wondering though, as far as Baldur's Gate 2 is concerned, should I be okay to just go with the fixpack from this site, and possibly unfinished business if I choose to use it? I also have to say, I appreciate the widescreen mod as well, as it cleared up the only problems I have had with Baldur's Gate 2 on windows seven, which was the main menu glitching up when I had selected an unsupported resolution, but with the mod, it cleared everything right up. Thanks again.
plainab Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 i would think you'd be ok with just the fixpack & unfinished business for BG2. I'd recommend at least some components from the BG2 Tweaks pack. I like to max my stackable items ^^ tho that is less of an issue with BG2 since there are containers but those cost and unlike everyone else I've always had a hard time making money in the games... you could always try the projectile retrieval mod (gotta plug that cause I helped out a little with that -- used it to help me to understand how to mod in the first place) on BG1 & BG2 don't remember if it works with IWD or not it may...
ravenwind286 Posted October 27, 2011 Author Posted October 27, 2011 Okay, thank you again. Last time I played through the whole series, I started with an Elf Thief that became a Swashbuckler once I hit BG2, so looking to change things up this time around, and hoping to have a good time with things again.
ravenwind286 Posted October 31, 2011 Author Posted October 31, 2011 Had another quick question, maybe you could help with. I just went through the process of installing Icewind Dale, and for some reason, the narrator's voice is gone from the prologue after creating a character, and I am not sure if this is something I could have turned off by accident. I started by installing the good old games version of Icewind Dale, followed by the fixpack, then the tweakpack, unfinished business, and finally the widescreen mod. Please let me know if I did any of this out of order, or if you have any ideas of why the narrator's voice is gone from the prologue. I am also currently running windows 7, 64 bit.
plainab Posted October 31, 2011 Posted October 31, 2011 question: did you start a game in IWD and get to where you could save before installing any mods? if not, that may be a possible cause since the game wasn't properly initialized. if you did, i have no idea.....
ravenwind286 Posted October 31, 2011 Author Posted October 31, 2011 Think I will reinstall the game, and check it out without anything else, see if it is just a problem with the Good Old Games version or a problem on my end, but in any event, will tinker with it a bit and see what I can figure out.
ravenwind286 Posted October 31, 2011 Author Posted October 31, 2011 After reinstalling the game and testing it without any packs, the narrator's voice was there, and was gone when I added the fixpack. Uninstalling the fixpack also restored the voice, so I am kind of curious what exactly is causing this to happen, especially if there are others who have not experienced this issue. I really do want to use the fixpack so hopefully something can be figured out. Thank you for your help so far as well.
ravenwind286 Posted October 31, 2011 Author Posted October 31, 2011 Sorry to post again so quick, but upon further testing, installing only the fixpack and not the game text update, the narrators voice is still there, which means the game is having some sort of issue with the text update. Hopefully narrowing this down can help get things figured out.
plainab Posted October 31, 2011 Posted October 31, 2011 ok... that gives me an idea of where to look. Might be able to develop a "hotfix" so you can use the fixpack and have the voiceover we will see ************* Found the problem... idk if it exists in other languages but the English GTU replaces string 14454. why idk because the text seems to be identical to the original. At any rate it is this line that has the NARR_PL sound file associated with it. But the GTU does not include the sound file. You can 'fix' it in one of two ways... search the English GTU tra file for 14454 and comment it out as well as commenting it out on the gtu.tpa file OR add [NARR_PL] after the end of the string so that it looks like: @1014454 = ~Our tale begins here, in the quiet fishing village of Easthaven. One of the so-called "Ten-Towns" of Icewind Dale, the tiny community is hardly a town, but rather a collection of ramshackle huts crowded together upon the icy shores of Lac Dinneshere. Here within a dimly lit tavern, a group of travelers sit huddled around a table, swapping tales and making grand plans for the future, completely unaware of the part they are to play in the events that are about to unfold.~ [NARR_PL] //added the sound file for the voice over the second is much easier ^^
ravenwind286 Posted November 1, 2011 Author Posted November 1, 2011 I added [NARR_PL] into the GTU tra file, but am still having no results for some odd reason, everything is still silent, unfortunately.
plainab Posted November 2, 2011 Posted November 2, 2011 did you reinstall the gtu component after adding that in? just checking cause it, wouldn't work if ya didn't...
ravenwind286 Posted November 2, 2011 Author Posted November 2, 2011 I got it working, what I was accidentally doing when I ran the fixpack again was hitting yes to all, and it replaced the file I changed, and I just stupidly realized that was the reason why it was not working. Thank you for all your help and patience in working with me to get things fixed up, I appreciate it .
