thanks all. a few more things:

1. Quest Pack (for BG2) seems really really old and unsupported, and the forum is filled with bug reports that nobody has answered in years. is this really worth it? is any of the material updated in other mods? i really don't want to go bug squashing in the middle of a game, and potentially have to restart.

2. the BWP install PDF is very useful and thorough, although goddammit, i was not intending to dig through all this stuff.

3. from googling "best NPC mods BG2" and reading some review threads (especially this one) i've got this general list of well-done NPCs:

tyris, kelsey, tashia, fade, angelo, sarah, xan, ninde, amber. anyone have additional suggestions or comments?

the problem with this list is they're basically all wizards or sorcerers, and occasionally a rogue, so i guess that means i'm probably not taking more than 2 at a time. i would have liked to pick up a druid or monk or barbarian, but i guess i'll kick out edwin.

i'm leaning toward angelo and tyris, though two fighters dualed to mages is a bit bleh. wait, you know what, i think i'll just shadowkeeper tyris into a druid or barbarian or something, and then i can pick up angelo, xan/ninde, and amber/sarah. in fact, if i'm going to be shadowkeepering NPCs, their class doesn't matter at all, does it?

is there a way to romance multiple NPCs at once? i mean, third party NPCs, not the bioware ones?

Don't use SK, use the mod L1NPC. It's a much, much, cleaner method (with the added benefit you won't feel like a munchkin, and that all stats will be correct).

alright, so this took me a LOT longer than i originally wanted to spend, but i've learned that there IS a way to package your own custom BG2 install that has the exact mods you want and have it available for other people, in a very automated way. this requires using BWP and editing the .bat files to customize having it run the exact setup-[modname].exe files you want, answering their customization questions the exact way you want, in the exact order you want. i ended up not doing this since it's just for me.

this is what i came up with (the numbers refer to their sections in the BWP pdf file--some mods don't have one):

install BG full, check all boxes

install TOSC full, check all boxes

patch TOSC 5512 (NOT DirectX 8+ patch)

install BG2 full

install TOB full

patch TOB 26498 (NOT 26499)

bg1 missing files (7zip file)

edit baldur.ini (cheats, debug mode, error log)

well, everything seems to work, except now it's quite choppy.

i've searched and done about as much as i could--turning off ambient music, running the general biffing (which did seem to help), etc., but it's still a bit too clunky to play enjoyably. in fact, it starts before i even load anything, just the character creation and stuff was bad. every time something happens--i click anything, the mouse lags for a half second, even on the menus. so i don't think it's any 3D acceleration or anything. does anyone know what this could be from? the widescreen mod? i'm not sure what else i can search for.

here's the weidu.log:

Oh boy, I went through what you did recently and only just came to an installation I am happy with, too. I am not a tech tech person, but here is what I can tell you from my experience:

1. The BWP is not your friend. Don't use it if you're just starting out. HOWEVER, the Big World Project PDF file is your BEST friend. If you are going to use ANY mod at all, you should have that sucker printed out (or in your iPad) and open right next to your computer when you are doing the install. It may be a little out of date but it is still the best and most comprehensible resource to see which individual components of which mod conflict with one another.

2. This may be just personal opinion, but if you are going to mod extensively I have found it much easier to use EasyTutu for BG1 and play it as a separate game, rather than using BGT for everything. The simplest reason is so you can split the BG1 mods from the BG2 mods and not have them conflict with one another. There is a little bit of outdatedness in the EasyTutu guide - most notably you have to do a little not well documented gymnastics to get the water degreenifier to work properly - but on the while I had much less tech problems installing 2 separate games than 1 big game. With I think the exception of the Rose NPC, which you seem not to be using, there aren't any mods to really miss out on by doing 2 games instead of 1 big one.

3. On NPCs, people have said it before but it took me painful experience to find out they were right- install ONLY who you want to play one playthrough. Yes, it's a pain in the ass - quest mods alone take a really long time to install, forget the tweaks and NPCs! One way to alleviate this pain is to copy your BG install directory AFTER you have installed all the quest mods you want but BEFORE any NPC. That being said, if you want to play with SCS, Ascension, BGTweaks, RR or ATweaks, you are still going to have to spend about an hour installing a fresh game every time you want to try a new NPC. There is just no easy way out of this without killing your desire to actually play the game. And NB: BioWare NPC tweaks, like the Mazzy Friendship or the Edwin Romance, those count as "NPC mods" too.

I say this: install no more than three new NPC mods at a time or you will probably regret it. If you install BioWare NPC tweaks, only install ONE romance. Be wary of installing the Edwin Romance with almost anything else, too, it's got the most compatibility issues of any other BiowareNpc mod I've yet seen. And last but not least just for your own fun, don't install multiples of the same class. Take Xan or Kelsey or Tashia, but don't take all of them, because they are all sorcerers, and you will probably get bored fast. Same with Solaufein or Angelo, etc, etc. Look at the class and alignment of the mod NPC, not just the rave reviews it may get, and decide what kind of game you want to play before you take them. And on romances: take only one romance if possible, and don't use cheats. Because, you really don't want to set yourself up to have your entire party abducted by Bodhi.

3. On Tweaks: use the BWP pdf file and laundry list your components in notepad or paper or something for each one. Read extensively whether they conflict with one another. This means all tweaks, from tnings as obvious as the BG2 Tweakpack to things that seem easy, like the 1 PP graphic tweaks. There are conflicts where you wouldn't think there are conflicts! Order of install is super important, you may have to install some mods 3 or 4 times in separate component bits to get them to work.

4. Test your game after each major block install. Quests, test. NPCs, test. Tweaks, test. Just make sure it works before you move on!

5. Only when you are done and sure everything is working, do the generalized biffing.

6. Don't reinstall or uninstall mods at all. Install them only once, right, the first time, and if you mess up, start over from scratch. Once you start seriousl playing, do not touch your mods at all. Not even if they update with a newer version!

Hope this helps, and hope someone can help you tech thru your custom install.

yeah, that's exactly what i did. i had that PDF file open the entire time. i planned out which mods i wanted, wrote out the list two posts above based on that PDF's ordering, and then went through it a second time to fine tune what conflicted with what, and as i installed the actual mod i'd read the readme associated to check which components i wanted. its an ARDUOUS process, ugh.

With I think the exception of the Rose NPC, which you seem not to be using, there aren't any mods to really miss out on by doing 2 games instead of 1 big one.

ugh. i really hope i don't have to do this, since i already figured out how BGT works (i.e., which mods conflict and which ones i do/don't need) and don't want to have to do the same for Tutu, but you may be right. if i don't need, for example SCSII, maybe Tutu will run better than my current BGT install. and if i don't need SCS, maybe when i get to BG2 it'll skip out on that bloat as well. does anyone else have experience with this?

Because, you really don't want to set yourself up to have your entire party abducted by Bodhi.

yeah, that's a good point. i guess i'll go with xan, and two of angelo/tyris/amber then.

Order of install is super important, you may have to install some mods 3 or 4 times in separate component bits to get them to work.

yep. if you look at my list two posts above, there are a few that i install in two different pieces because the PDF said so.

4. Test your game after each major block install. Quests, test. NPCs, test. Tweaks, test. Just make sure it works before you move on!

i suppose that will tell me which things are bringing the lag/choppiness. but this is rapidly becoming a huge fucking pain in the ass, if you'll excuse my french.

when i get some time i'll check some threads on quickly uninstalling/reinstalling or restoring to a clean install. maybe that'll help. and i'm tempted to edit the batch files for BWP and use that automated installer so i don't have to manually check the readme and cross-reference against the BWP PDF and choose every component of every mod every single install. asidhalkdsh.

thanks a ton for your reply though. i think Tutu + fewer NPCs are the most likely sources of speeding up the game.

Installing multiple NPC mods together should be fine; there's no technical reason why it won't work as far as I can think. :) Especially the friendships, IEP, RE, and any other such mods that alter BioWare NPCs, they can all be installed together with absolutely no problems.

You don't need to use easyTuTu, your install should be fine. It does separate things out, but it's by no means necessary!

well that's not really the problem--the game works, and as far as i can tell, there shouldn't be any bugs or errors. the problem, however, is that it's very choppy, even after biffing everything. every time the mouse clicks something, it will lag for a half second. so for example, selecting the party (click), (lag while trying to move the mouse to tell them where to move), give an order (click), (lag while trying to move the mouse to select a spell), select the spell (click), (lag while trying to target the enemy), etc., etc.

does BGT have more lag/choppiness than Tutu? does installing more than 3 NPCs increase it also?

The NPCs/NPC related mods aren't the ones that tend to make the game choppy -- it's other mods. It can often be mods that alter bags of holding, or add a lot of code to baldur.bcs. TuTu might be less choppy, because there'd be less crap in baldur.bcs, but it could be any number of things. I am relatively confident in saying it's probably not an NPC mod, however.

no, that's not a good point at all. in my opinion you are playing npc mods for banters/romances with said npc and you shouldn't give a damn about their classes, especially if banters are hot and romances spicy, hehehe

also, having 3 sorcs in the party sounds kinda fun, imo. you know, casting for example imp. hastex3 or pierce magicx3 at the same time might be pretty useful. just go in the first floor of DawidW improved Watchers Keep and you'll see. ;]

on the slowdowns. scs is the cause, probably. or your system specs. but my bet is on scs, sorry. had some problems with this mod, really strange. mod works great to some point (usually Tazok camp) and then bam! major slowdown - unplayable. too many enemies on the screen?? i don't know...proc dual core 3GB, 2GB ram, 260GTX, in short - WTF? but it was like 2 years ago, though. scs2 works great all the time, absolutely no problems. /quarian scientist/

try uninstalling everything. install both games vanilla and play them a little, see how it works. if well install a mod or two and play a litttle. step by step trial and error is the only solution, imo. and probably only a little more time consuming then installing all mods at once and then struggling with a broken game.

sry for my engrish.

Also Xan's not a sorcerer. He's by default an enchanter but can (thank god) be changed at installation to a generalist mage, a mage/fighter, or a sorcerer. So don't rule out Kelsey or Tashia just because you have Xan around.

well, my planned party is mostly set, and is as follows for SOA:

gish: ftr/mag/thf (PC)

tank 1: berserker dualed to clr (level 1 NPC-mod someone, currently the plan is angelo here) (korgan before i get angelo)

tank 2: ftr/drd (jaheira, with weimer shapeshifting but only leather and no helmets)

wizard: ftr dualed to wiz (tyris flare, or default angelo, or ninde or whatever)

sorc: sorc (xan)

thief/misc melee: pure thief (amber, or fade)

sarevok will get level 1'd and then used to replace any NPC i'm bored/tired of, or none at all.

i guess i'll install 4 NPCs and see how that goes. if it is true that NPC mods don't mess with the lag, then that's great. i don't know what to do about SCS lagging it up though--i can't NOT install it, that's basically the most important part of this install. without that all the combat becomes meaningless. maybe use Tutu and not have both SCS and SCSII in the same install?

DavidW, suggestions?

I've joined this site to say thank you to forklift for starting this thread and being so persistent. I've been playing nwn/nwn2 for 6 years and so have been reading comparisions with BG for just as long. I've finally bought the Anthology and have discovered this site and many others and have been completely overwhelmed.

Pinning this thread for newcomers I can assure you will eleviate a lot of anxiety--especially since you may experience more visitors with the Anthology packaging for $20.

Thank you, forklift! :)

you're welcome man. i know a lot of people must be in the same (or similar) position as me, and feel intimidated and lost at how fractured and confusing the BG/2 modding world is. i hope this thread has made sense to you and others.

to everybody else, it looks like i've solved the choppy problem, and it didn't require reinstalling everything. i was dreading it, about to do it, but decided as a last ditch effort to turn all the graphics settings in the config UI down and see what would happen. it became SMOOTH. so then i went back out and individually tested which option was the culprit--turns out it was 3D acceleration.

i have no idea how that's possible, as i'm on a second generation (sandy bridge) i5 dual core 2.3GHz, but i suppose the newfangled intel HD 3000 integrated graphics processing power isn't enough for a game from 2000 which uses almost no 3D stuff? i don't know. but whatever, problem solved! now time to be a terrible ftr/mag/thf stuck at level 1 for half the game yay!

It's always the 3D acceleration. :)
