Problem with 'More consistent Breach spell' and liches.

Recommended Posts

I think I've encountered a bug with the component "More consistent Breach spell" which is supposedly designed to make it usable on liches and rakshasas. Unfortunately for me, I can dispel all their spell protections however much I like, Breach will still not remove anything from them, they keep all their fire shields and stone skins and PfMW no matter what.

I'm running BG2:EE(latest patch) with the 27th version of SCS. However I don't see any mention of this bug in the release notes for the 28th version, so unless this component was tinkered with and not logged in the changelog I don't much look forward to another couple of hours in order to reinstall my mods. I'm also using BG2tweaks, UB, Rogue Rebalancing Mod, and Dungeon-Be-Gone in addition to SCS v27 if those have any bearing on anything.

Current example: Azamantes, 5th level of watchers keep. I have Neera cast imp alacrity and then cast 2x RRR, 3x pierce shield and finally 2x breach(just to be safe). Carefully noting that no sequencers/contingencies are fired in the round or so this takes her. After this, I have my PC attack Azamantes with the short sword of mask +4 -> "Weapon Ineffective".

Instead of the dispelling, if I hit CTRL+R my PC can without issue attack Azamantes and damage him just fine. Azamantes then casts a new PfMW, at which point I tell Neera to cast Breach, which does nothing to the lich even though the *only* buff currently active is PfMW. My short sword +4 is now ineffective.

I had the same issue with the elemental lich on the same level. No matter how many times i used anti-magic on it, it would not allow me to dispel anything using the breach spell. This was also the case with the Demi-Lich on level 4, but I just figured I'd skip that one until later as I still hadn't gotten access to level 9 spells at that time(making casting multiple anti-magics take quite a while which made it really freaking dangerous :p).

If it helps, I've installed "everything" from the "Spell tweaks" component of SCS, except a few of the multiple choice ones where I had to make a choice(as I recall, I wanted Harm to work as per normal for whatever reason, I don't really remember the reason since I don't even use it, but oh well...). I've also installed the "HLAs for choice mages in SOA and TOB" component.

I'm pretty sure this has been the case with all the liches I've encountered so far, except that I've been able to use turn undead in order to make them flee into a corner where PfMW would simply expire. Unfortunately, both the Elemental Lich and Azamantes at level 5 of WK are too high level to be affected by a level 19 cleric's turn undead. I did manage to kill the elemental lich through some clever use of Sanctuary and simply letting him use up his most dangerous spells and I reckon I could kill Azamantes in this manner too. But I'd rather see this issue fixed.

Also, sorry for the rather long WeiDU log but I tried reinstalling the "More consistent Breach spell" component with no effect. Thank you for reading.

It's a bug. Wisp also mentioned it somewhere, something about a missing sec type or similar tehnicalities, however that was for v23 I think. I never use Breach on them so I never actually saw it happen.

It's a different issue, actually (the thing Wisp saw was fixed a while back). I'll upload a silently-fixed version later this evening.

Ah, I see. Is there an easy way to fix it manually or would I have to wait for a version where this is fixed in order for breach to work then?

Unzip the attachment and dump the contents into your override folder.

I had the same issue with the Lich under the Temple District during the eye quest using v27 of scs. To alleviate the issue I of course checked for updates immediately and found v28. I've updated my game + scs and installed the neccesary modules again, and I wanted to see if it had worked so I fired up my save game before the encounter with said Lich and tried it out. I broke down the Lichs spell defenses with 3 Pierce Magics, followed by a Breach (cast by one of the mages that had cast Pierce Magic previously) after I had made sure they had all landed, but nothing happened. I had already instructed my party to attack the Lich as the Breach hit, but the Stoneskin and the Fireshields did not go down. I started doing damage (at first only to the stone skin based on the Fireshields' feedback in the combat log), and I assume the only reason as to this happening is due to a lapse in the Lichs casting of Protection from Magical Weapons, as the Fireshields and Stoneskins were still active. The Breach spell did not do much from what I saw.

My question then is, will I have to reload an earlier save or start an entirely new playthrough for it to kick in effect? The save game I tried was a quicksave where I have already entered the area which contains the Lich (though I haven't spotted it yet).

I've tried it a couple of times using the auto-save a little while earlier, which leads to the same result. If the Protection from Magical Weapons isn't allowed to run out, I cannot damage him with my physical weapons, regardless of how many Breaches I throw at it, after making sure it had no spell protections available.

Edit: Perhaps the Breach_Fix you linked earlier would help me? I was unsure whether or not it would be any help since I've updated to v28 in the meantime (today).

I've tried creating a new game and running directly down to the Lich to test it again. It seems that Breach still won't have any effect on the Lichs defensive spells, even after I've taken down all its spell defences. I am using v28 as written above.

Edit: It shouldn't have any effect that I'm doing a multiplayer game alone I would presume? Everything else is in working order at least.

2nd edit: I saw Alsn link his Weidu log file, I can do the same, if it is any help whatsoever.

Breach seems to work on Rakshasa's, as it seems to have an effect on Ishtafeer and it shows the appropriate text in the combat log upon impact. I'm pretty sure she is a Rakshasa, and it also works on her two companions. To clarify, they are the Rakshasa's in the Druid Grove in the Trademeet questline.

I'm not sure if I had the problem, because I think breach worked inconsistently for me last night. Then again, with the combat log in this game its hard to tell. I think some of the time spell immunity might have been up causing breach to fail? I'm not sure but I ended up having to wait for PfMW to wear off on its own because I ran out of breaches.

I made sure to remove any of such buffs with plenty of Pierce Magics, casting at least three (and making sure not all are absorbed by the Spell Shield which happens on occasion), so Spell Immunity shouldn't be an issue, at least not in my case. The combat log works fine normally on Breach cast on everything for me, except (obviously) with Liches as it doesn't have an effect. I do get a "Lich: Spell Ineffective" if I'm not mistaken.

Edit: I'm still having the issue, although it is fixed by doing an Crtl + R on the Lich. I cannot seem to grasp what is the problem here, I've tried using more than 6 Pierce Magics and a similar amount of Ruby Ray of Reversals, and I'm still not able to Breach the Lich. After a few of the PM/RRR are cast they stop giving the feedback in the combat log, I assume indicating there is nothing left to dispel (this doesn't always happen though). I checked by casting a Remove Magic afterwards, which worked just fine, indicating PI:Abjuration has correctly been removed, yet Breach still won't connect. Is there something fundamental I'm missing here?

This also happens if the Lich does not prebuff with PI:Abjuration, but instead chooses PI:Divination (if you use the scaled down prebuff-version), still rendering Breach ineffective unless I Ctrl-R the Lich, regardless of how many PM/RRR and Remove Magic and Truesight I throw in there. It is really annoying me as I used to really like the Lich fights in BG2 SCS, but without being able to Breach them part of my fun is really disrupted.

Is the module working fine for you David? If you are busy with other things that is of course understandable, I'm definitely not trying to rush you! I'm a patient man, I'd just like to know it isn't a problem solely on my end (although I wouldn't know what would cause it) :)
