Glyph of Warding bug in Icewind Dale

I've asked in other forums and tried every idea I've read about, but I figured I'd come to the experts. I have the GOG version of Icewind Dale, v1.42 fix and tweak packs installed. Every time I cast Glyph of Warding the game crashes (maybe not every time but about 80% of the time). Running as administrator in XP Service Pack 2. I attempted to go in with DLCTEP and change the sound to something different (which is what I read caused it) but I am either doing something wrong or it's not saving my changes, or my saved changes aren't being affected while in game. I'm sure if anyone knows the solution it's you guys, so thanks for any help in advance.

Running as administrator in XP Service Pack 2.

Or you are attempting this ...

Now what's your install directory and what is your actual Operation System ?

The reason for this, is that if you actually have anything else than the Win XP SP2, the Programs Files sub-folders are most likely protected by horrors beyond stupidity. And as such the messily running the program with different settings does nothing to effect the simple fact that the game is not modified by the mods you have "installed" to the directory because the changes made by the program were stored to a different partition of the drive(hidden compilation of folders in the "ProgramData" folder), and by running the different settings, you guarantee that the game won't ever have access to those files.

Hmm ok, well let's just say that I'm willing to do a clean install (which would only take a few minutes). I'm running on Windows 8. So let's say i install Icewind Dale from scratch....what are my next steps as for as mods and tweaks should go??

First is install to some other directory than \Program Files, say like \Games. That takes it out of the monstrously ridiculous protections Windows 8 has for that directory (or any directory with a similar name). Then check out the Glyph of Warding spell, and edit as you see fit.

It's installed in it's own folder outside the Program files, the fix pack is implemented. I go into DLCTEP to do the changes (under edit spell) and then save as. They show up as changed in the DLCTEP program but have no effect on how it works in the game, so what am I doing wrong as far as the editing goes?? I even have DLCTEP installed in the same folder as Icewind Dale, so there shouldn't really be any directory problems. Nothing I do in the edits seems to make the spell do anything different. I know others have ran into this bug in the past, and I'm just wondering if it is in fact fixable, or is it something that just can't be rectified.

Your installation folder is protected by the Operation System, just install the game to a different folder and it won't be. See the DLTCEP is based on a build that was programmed before the Macrohard Wormdoors was updated to protect the base operation system from harm, they over did it just a bit, by setting "all" the Program Files -folders and their sub-folders to be mirrored by various of ways, so their content is ran as it's stored in a controlled state.

My BG2 moding FAQ has this, and there are other unrelated and independent articles about it.

Glyph of Warding has some hardcoded goofiness with its casting sound. Fixpack used to assign a casting sound, which just caused crashes. The only change Fixpack makes to Glyph nowadays is the correction to its casting speed.

Was the cause of the crash ever identified ?

Yes. Don't assign a casting sound to Glyph.

See this is my problem, the game isn't installed in the Program files, it's installed on Drive C: in it's own folder called, simply, Icewind Dale. I even installed the DLCTEP into the Icewind Dale folder so that wasn't in the program files either. Now, if it matters, this is the GOG download. The setup for installation is located in Documents/GOG Downloads, but that is also not in the program files.

I have deleted the sound for the glyph completely, and when I save as, it takes me to the override folder, and every time I go back into DLCTEP my changes are there, but they don't have any effect on the casting of the Glyph in the game, it always makes the same sound and crashes (to test I load one of the premade Clerics and cast it after one rest at the inn). Something isn't lining up, either DLCTEP can't be used with the GOG installation, or I am doing something wrong in the editing process.

This is getting immensely frustrating. Nothing I do in the editor changes the spell in any way, I even deleted the file associated with the spell in the override folder and the spell is still showing up in the game as per usual. The only thing I can think of is that I'm not supposed to be saving the spell to this folder, but another one, so my question turns to this. After I edit the Glyph of Warding Spell, where do I save the changes to??

Is this only for a saved game or for new games also?

Saved games, new games....I re-installed everything, but it was doing it before on a saved game, now what I do to test if the changes work (and they haven't) is load a completely new game and load one of the pre-made clerics, write the spell, rest, and cast it. It crashes 8/10 times I'd say.

Problem is fixed it seems. The solution was in the configuration tool that comes with the game. My Use Open GL 3D Acceleration was turned off by default, turning it on seems to (at the least the two times I tried it) fix the problem. So for any future GOG version users out there who Google into this thread, I would suggest starting there to save yourself some headaches, thanks to everyone for the help.
