SCS v32: installation times

One of the things I've tried to do in v32 is optimise the installation time a bit, since it's been getting a bit out of hand (especially in heavily-kitted installs).

Here are the install times I got for a clean install on BG2EE and BGEE (in both cases on a reasonably good 2016-vintage desktop PC). If you get radically longer times, even on a heavily modded install, I'd be interested to know.

(Components marked with + will take longer in rough proportion to how many NPCs you have installed; components marked with * will take longer in rough proportion to how many creatures you have installed.)

BG2EE

IWD arcane spells: 2m
(+)IWD divine spells: 2m 40s
(+)NPC customisation: 2m 15s
Remove unrealistically convenient items: 1m25s
Remove unrealistically convenient ammo: 25s
(*)Initialise AI components: 3m40s
(*)Smarter general AI: 3m20s
Better calls for help: 8s
(*)Smarter mages: 13m
(*)Smarter priests: 4m
(*)Potions for NPCs: 2m
Improved Golems: 35s
Improved Fiends: 1m 35s
Smarter Dragons: 25s
Smarter Beholders: 1m5s
Smarter Illithids: 25s
Smarter Vampires: 15s
Spellcasting Demiliches: 11s
Improved Bodhi: 21s
Improved Sahuagin: 27s
Improved Drow: 15s
Improved Fire Giant Temple: 15s
Improved Sendai's Enclave: 17s
Improved Abazigal's Lair: 24s
Improved BG2 minor encounters: 24s

Everything else: 10s or less

BGEE

IWD arcane spells: 2m 10s
(+)IWD divine spells: 2m 25s
(+)NPC customisation: 2m 35s
(*)Initialise AI components: 4m 20s
(*)Smarter general AI: 1m 10s
(*)Smarter mages: 3m 15s
(*)Smarter priests: 55s
(*)Potions for NPCs: 1m 5s
Improved Durlag's tower: 50s

Everything else: 10s or less

I didn't do systematic timing for EET, but I did time the big ones:

NPC customisation: 3m 20s
Initialise AI components: 5m 15s
Smarter general AI: 4m 20s
Smarter mages: 18m 40s
Smarter priests: 6m

Are these timings from an install on a solid state drive or from an install on a traditional hard disk?

SSD.

I'd be surprised if it makes too much difference - I think the main time sink in an SCS install is processing, not disk r/w. But it's a good point.

DavidW,

the time difference for the Smarter Mage changing so drastically from BG:EE and BG2:EE depends on a much wider array of possibilities that component accounts for in the sequel?

I only measured Smarter Priests (8m 10s) and Smarter Beholders (2m 33 s) but I would say my times are generally twice as long as yours on a buisness ultrabook that is a few years old
BG2 EE v2.5.16.6, Windows, English, installed via Beamdog client, no other mods, SCS v32 RC9

I've been installing this since midnight and now it's almost 7 AM and I've just ended the Smarter Priest part.

Interesting; which version of the mod? And what other mods do you have installed?

(Mostly v32 seems to be giving people pretty reasonable install times, so it may be a local problem.)

I think 32.5, I downloaded the latest file from the web page.

I already had Ascension, unfinished business, various banter packs and friendship mods, item upgrade and NPC stronghold installed before adding SCS.

bg2 ee2.5.16.6   I can’t install [AI enhancements]:

ERROR: illegal 2-byte read from offset 3145386 of 7866-byte file SPWI618.spl

ERROR: [SPWI618.spl] -> [override] Patching Failed (COPY) (Failure ("SPWI618.spl: read out of bounds"))

Stopping installation because of error.

Not sure what this has to do with installation times. If it’s a general bug, report it in the 32.6 bug report thread and include the contents of the WEIDU.log file.

Just did a full install of SCS on BGEE and BG2EE via EET.  It took 42 minutes to do a full install on both games.  So about 21 minutes per a game.  I noticed it only uses one CPU core.  The average computer has at least quad core so it may speed things up substantially if it were possible to multi thread it.  I have 7 cores and 15 threads doing nothing the whole time.  Still, this is a nice improvement over the old install.  Good job on the improvements.
