GemRB bugs, issues and problems with mods and mega mod setups

EDIT: see below for a list of things already fixed or tracked

This is strictly not putting entire blame on GemRB but I want to warn other players who wants to play with mods on GemRB. There are few caveats they should know especially when doing mega mod installation.

Game breaking immersion bugs:
-when hiding in shadows NPC will become hidden immediately even if she/he fails to do so
-sometimes random NPCs can die when you enter the area (ghost child in the Graveyard district or Alexandria in Umar Hills)

Annoying bugs:
-Sudden day/night change
-Whenever NPC joins the group his equipped weapons are hidden but still occupy the weapon slot(s) - see Kinderek NPC mod
-worldmap stutter when scrolling
-when entering the area you need to wait few second for NPCs to load

Bugs players can live with:
-many spells animations needs to be fixed but spells themselves seems to work as intended
-many kill on the spot spells animations don't work properly; bodies of slain NPCs disapear etc.

-Flesh to Stone spell - the spell animation whirling effect is not centered on target but to southeast or southwest of the target

Mods that are not functioning properly on GemRB:
-Munchmod v3.3 - Arkvisti show wares option ends dialog and the he leaves the current area following his default behavior - unable buy sell anything from Arkvisti
-Kinderek NPC - his custom "magic" weapons are unplayable he can stil use normal weapons in his two other slots but won't be able to use any magical item because this NPC is antimagic and destroys any magic item you place in his inventory (what's the expected behaviour?)
-Tortured Soul - Kachico NPC instead of default lvl 8 you will get that NPC at level 13 when leaving the Irenicus dungeoun.
-BGGRAPHICS spams you annoyingly with day/night move clip if for some reason the move clip is delayed some modded and vanilla NPCs won't load in the area e.g. Kelsey and Viconia in the government district, but they will get lodaed once you go through the day/night movie clip
-Isra mod for BG2; dialogs won't fire on its own you have to activate them manually by speaking to NPC


Mods/components that don't work at all on GemRB or are broken:-Shadows Over Soubar is incompatible with precious lynx mod increasing party size limit from 6 to 10 - with 10pp mod.
-Homeward Bound v7 - doesn't work at all can't see dialog options for summoned NPCs in Pocket Plane

-Don't install Korgan Friendship, Korgan Redeption, Viconia Friendship, and Jan Extended Quest together. They don't mix well together on GemRB producing empty dialog window bug for mods I listed above in strike through bold. I ran numerous tests and am yet to determine which exactly mod causes which empty dialogs.

I am not yet finish with mega mod installation I am taking my time to test most of the mods if they work. I will add more to the list.

-Becoming Fallen Paladin/Ranger is impossible ( makes me think that mod Virtue will not be working with GemRB)

With limited testing, i think you are correct. I killed some bystanders on Waukeen's Promenade and got reputation decrease to 7 but didn't fall.

 

-Cleric/Thief has no access to turn undead widget (hotkey turn undead works for this multiclass but you get no widget)

-Cleric/Ranger has no access to hide in shadows/stealth widget

The file responsible for this is unhardcoded/bg2/qslots.2da. In the cleric_thief line, change the "slot2" column from 1 to 6 and you will get Turn Undead instead of thieving. I don't remember though how you can add an extra slot to be called from the "innate" abilities like the vanilla engine.

 

-sometimes random NPCs can die when you enter the area (ghost child in the Graveyard district or Alexandria in Umar Hills)

I saw this too in some cases. I can't remember for sure but i think the cause was that the creatures had 0 HP (or some attribute like strength 0 or something) and while the vanilla engine spawned them fine, gemrb killed them as soon as they spawned. Can you check wellyn.cre and the alexandria creature in dltcep or NearInfinity and see how many HP they have;

 

-Stunning (happen to me by getting hit by imp in Irenicus hideout second level) and poisoning sometimes doesn't work but you still see the icon that you're poisoned/stunned

I got this too in some playthrough.

-ToBEx Enable Auto-Pause On All Screens - this is big deal sometiems you forget to pause tha game and dialog starts when you are in the inventory menu etc. freezing your game you have to quit and load your last save

Some (all ?) tobex components just enable a setting in the ini file and so they have meaning only with tobex. In GemRB, there may be a different way to enable some of the settings (for example an "unhardcoded" file) or they may not be implemented at all.

 

About the Four Inventory slots, i had posted a patch some years ago but it wasn't polished enough to be used by everyone. You can search the forum for it and use it if you like.

About the L1 Prof Restrictions, in the vanilla engine there is a file called profsmax.2da. I don't know what is its purpose but check it incase it does what you want.

About the All Races can Dual Class, unhardcoded/bg2/races.2da has a column CAND and only Humans have a 1. Try changing every race to have 1. Maybe it isn't implemented and it will have no effect for other races but it doesn't hurt to try.

 

The unhardcoded/{shared,bg2} directories have a load of files you can mess with and do many cool things (like sorcerer with thief skills :) and stuff like that).

Fallen stuff: seems it was hardcoded and the script actions are used only in the hell trials. Fixed now.

Fallen stuff: seems it was hardcoded and the script actions are used only in the hell trials. Fixed now.

I tried to trigger it but couldn't. When i read the wiki to find which console function changes the reputation so that i could quickly test changes, i read that "reputation will be divided by 10 when reported". So for some reason, the reputation has values multiplied by 10 and indeed when i changed the variable to 70, i could trigger it fine.

 

In vanilla, when your rep reaches 7, you remain paladin and only fall when you drop to 6. So i changed the value to 60.

In gemrb while i lost the paladin abilities, i could still turn undead where in vanilla the button is grayed. So i made the above change to disable the button. With limited testing it seems to work. I didn't test if i can still turn undead with hotkeys or scripts though.

 

Another discrepancy that remains is that in vanilla when you press R to view the character tab, the first line says "Fallen Paladin Level 7" where in gemrb it just says "Paladin Level 7". I didn't fix it because i didn't know how to change the string.

 

Offtopic: If you remember, some time ago, i bothered you to implement a variable in cmakelists.txt for installing to a different libdir. You implemented it as "LIBDIR_SUFFIX" when every other project uses is "LIB_SUFFIX". I didn't mention it before because i didn't want to impose on you more.

Thanks for double-checking and digging in — I just tested via the console. Now the first patch is applied, I finished the second (prevent casting, reenable both if status is restored), and GUIREC shows it. :)

polymorph paperdoll: the palette issue is known + I suspect we show the doll for more forms than the original

 

There is missing paperdoll for Irenicus in the mod Longer Road v1.5.1 but Illithid paperdoll for Varshoom NPC is present. Also the cutscene where Irenicus gets tortured burning in hell hangs up. Your party gets reported to ARHELL.are to watch Irenicus cutscene. Player control is disabled with purple circles under each of your NPC. The only way to get the cutscene moving is to type MoveToArea("ARHELL") as quickly as you can when you finish dialogue with Rielv otherwise you get stuck.

bounty hunter: can you elaborate?

 

You can place Bounty Hunter's special snares remotely without moving bounty hunter to the location where you want to set the snare. On GemRB the bounty hunters just place snares on the spot where she/he is standing.
Sudden day/night change: what do you mean?

 

Day goes into night in a split of a second. I remember that on vanilla engine the change wasn't so sudden.
worldmap stutter when scrolling: can't reproduce, how are you scrolling?

 

By dragging the mouse. The buttons in to left corner work alright but I never use them even on vanilla engine too slow.

Loudness problem. Whenever you see Saraduish Solider damage X you hear loud grunt even if the you are on the other side of the town.

 

 

 

Kinderek weapons: the mod author didn't fully set up his character

 

LOL a bug fixes a bug. Any NPC will pester you twice or thrice when you kick them out of the team - this is also bug I found playing GemRB but with Kinderek it actually helps.
1) You get Kinderek into the group
2) you join any wizard into the group.
3 ) Kinderek leaves the group and attacks that wizard and turn against you
4) After 2-3 seconds Kinderek starts dialogue with you about why you kicked him out but then you say don't go and he joins again with his distruptor in hands.
I can report that Dace NPC also has the same problem as Kinderek.

Ok, I should have the fixes for the paperdoll today. First the mod uses a nonstandard bam, but I also see what's causing the miscoloring.

 

worldmap: I've never seen any such problems, but I've also never tried any megamod install. Do you get any errors or warnings in the console after opening the worldmap and scrolling?

I tested a little the latest build. gemrb-win32-08f0f04.zip

Irenicus paperdoll from Longer Road shows correctly but there are still bugs with his body not changing from fire elemental to Irenicus elf body. As soon as Irenicus joins you need to ctril + R on him and save the game (save must be made in pocketplane) then load that save again.

There seems to be problem with spell Maze and Imprisonment and minor with Flesh to Stone - one bug is related to those three spells.

Your NPC don't leave the party when she/he gets turned to stone or mazed/imprisoned. When maze or imprisonment is cast on your NPC he/she will disappear briefly from the screen but after 1-2 seconds she/he is back.

Mod related bugs/issues are marked by violet.

I dunno if this is bug but the console is spamming messages like [EffectQueue]: Edwin is immune to effect: ApplyEffect. The name of the NPC seems not to matter.

-missing experience for turning creatures into stone and imprisoning them. (Isn't this vanilla behaviour?)

-Snivrebins have gnome avatar (Aurora Shoes and Boots) (should be halfling? What is this guy's animation id [ctrl-m])

-Vanilla better unsellable item icon background 

-BG1 Romantic Encounters Bardolan's Briefing, by berelinde: 2.7 - when invited to Bardolan's office game crashes. On vanilla engine it loads CTD free new area with CHARNAME and Bardolan. Bardolan is  captain and can be found in Nashkel garrison. 

-Having cursed girdle (gender bender one) in the PC inventory without equipping it trigger BG1 NPC Projects banters. They suppose to trigger when PC actually put the belt on.

- Cursed Items don't have cursed icon over NPC portrait and can be removed free at will. Also spell remove curse don't remove any equipped cursed items. I have installed Cursed Items v3_8 mod. (works without the mod)

-Game Over Party Dead PC doesn't not receive proper icon over portrait titled dying when HP lowered to 1 or less. 

-GemRB in Game Over Party Dead mod doesn't not set correctly variable #gbhaalhp1. It sets #gbhaalhp1=2 so when PC recovers after the battle she/he becomes invulnerable to all damage. I fix that issue by setting #gbhaalhp1=0 in the save using NearInfinity whenever enemy knocks out my PC

-Game Over Party Dead sometimes your PC is still lying down on the ground "unconscious" even when battle ends and you cure him.

-Game Over Party Dead when your PC survives and gets up from unconscious state after the battle there should be journal entry which in GemRB is missing

-Game Over Party Dead - enemy AI targets pointlessly unconscious PC whose hp is 1 - at this stage Charname becomes invulnerable to all damage as long as party members are alive. Enemy AI should target other party members instead.

-Item Revision/ Allow stealth in heavy armors - hiding in shadow will always be successful if your ranger or fighter/thief wears chainmail or full plate armor

-Baldur's Gate Trilogy - Music -> Full Baldur's Gate/Shadows of Amn/Throne of Bhaal Music (WARNING: patches BGMain.exe) - sometimes music stops playing and only way of restoring it is to save the game, quit the game and reload again.

GmeRB explicitly looks for that ambient box to be checked in order to play ambient sound.

Korgan Friendship with Korgan Redeption before will give you empty dialogs windows in dialog added by mods - Coran by Kuylock, Ding0 Quest Pack, Lucy the Wyvern v4a, Dace NPC, Kelsey NPC, and Keto NPC on mega mod installation setups. I couldn't duplicate issue with Jan Extended Quest on vanilla engine. I advise against installing this mod it can break any mod's dialogs you install after.

-Near death comments trigger in the dialogue window but you can't hear NPC making such comment (who, which string?) (Ansr: I check and it seems every joinable NPC, for e.g. Imoen says I feel so cold when her HP drops below certain threshold. Tested on Xzar, Monty, Dynaheir, Brawen, CHARNAME, Jaheria, Khalid, Minsc, Xan, Flinch, Edwin, Kagain)

-Minor Exploit: Temporary stats boosts allow human NPCs to dual class e.g. with strength boost Brawen can dual to fighter

-Joinable NPCs miss idle animations i.e. stretching chess were there more?

-Throne of Bhaal saves are stored in multiplayer mpsave folder instead of default one save folder. (by design)

-Khalid, Jaheira vs. Monty, Xzar hostile reactions don't trigger.

-Reputation reaction don't trigger as well. 

 -Virtue mod - no notification in dialogue window when your virtue drops or raises. Also there should be description next to Virtue number (villainous, ethical etc.)

-Some NPCs repeat same line over and over during the combat Ediwn's "your worthless life ends here" loop. 

-Sarevok Wiederherstellung/Restore mod. Sarevok's Paperdoll is present but coloring of the paperdoll is off.

-Thrown spiritual hammers cause CTD with the latest build  gemrb-win32-b0bf24e.zip

-Can't finish quest/get gold from Mayor of Beregost for killing Basilius in chapter 4 but this was a long time bug that is left unfixed. I remember encountering that bug when I was using vanilla platform to play BGT way back many years ago..***

-IWD2/HOW style detailed combat feedback for other games in GemRB: 1.5 it stopped working like it got uninstalled I didn't notice even when. (just reinstall properly)

-petrified and imprisoned party members don't leave the group

-Cavalier kit can't level up with the latest build gemrb-win32-b0bf24e.zip

- weird prolonged  coins dropping sound when donating to temples (depends on how much you donate - whether a rep increase happens)

-resettable traps can't be disarm after they reappear (fixed with gemrb-win32-af019be.zip) 

-The Great Gazib's Ogre Opah leaves loot after exploding (depends on Gore)

-Ring of Master Mind prevents saving the game "You cannot save the game when you don't have controll over all your party member" unequipping the ring let's you save normally.  (Dunno which mod adds this ring because I don't think it's vanilla). I checked in NearInfinity and this ring is cursed and causes feeblemindness probably comes from mod Cursed Items v3_8

- missing buy sound in merchant interface #102

-Right clicking on any NPC should trigger their voiced line on GemRB it won't however (you need to set the sound feedback level to anything but Never)

-ToBEx Allow All Races to Dual Class (on gemrb you just edit a 2da to get the same result)

-Firebeard in the Candlekeep Inn (Chapter 1/BG1) - his body will disapear along with his equippement when killed by Player (killing Firebeard in Beregorst works correctly you see his body and get his equipment) (works for me)

-Imprisonment spell don't trap the target. Creature briefly disappears blinking then reappears. 

-viewing kit description of some modded NPCs like Kachico will freeze the game she is dual class kensai/mage (need the error, likely just the gui errored out)

-BG1NPC Project: Minsc will have his banter that Dyna is dead when asked what he's thinking about even if Dynaheir is resurrected. In vanilla it checks whether Dynaheir is alive or dead. In GemRB if Dynaheir dies at least once Minsc consider her dead. Playing with variable in the BALDUR.GAM called dynaheirdeath = 0 or 1 doesn't have effect. I checked in vanilla and Minsc will not consider Dyna dead when resurrected whether via spell or cheat ctrl+R. Same applies to Jaheira and Khalid pair. TLDR: resurrection spells offered by BG1 temples don't reset the Dead state SetGlobal("SPRITE_IS_DEADFoo","GLOBAL",0)

-dire charm spell don't work at all on your party members they will just stand in one place and do nothing even though the circle is red under the NPC

- enemy creatures don't use doors (vanilla behaviour, which mod changes this besides tactics' improved illych for that one door?) (I don't think this is vanilla behavior as long as there is no auto-save between areas the enemy creature should be able to chase you)[yes it is, nobody can open doors unless scripted to in vanilla].

- sometimes random NPCs can die when you enter the area (ghost child in the Graveyard district or Alexandria in Umar Hills)

 

-Thief Galore and Avatar switching from 1 Pixell Production (1PP)
