In addition to using NI, there's also Bammer, though you'll need to compile it. It's what I used to turn my PNGs into BAMs for IWDification. It's a godsend for having to work with awful, multi-sequence BAMs like states.bam. 

I've got a Windows version, and if anyone wants to supply a macOS and Linux version, I'd be happy to drop them into the downloads/tools section.
