Twani
A friend of mine gave me a whole bunch of flowers in celebration... <3 (Of course, he being he, he had the date wrong and gave them to me on March 6th. But I'm very happy nonetheless. ) Happy Women's Day! Let's all hope for happiness, peace, safety and a good rest of the year. Link to comment
EiriktheScald
I must plead ignorance on this one (sorry). Is it like a cross between Valentines/Mother's Day? What do the flowers represent? Link to comment
berelinde
Not a clue, but why risk it. Buy one for Mrs Skald. Link to comment
EiriktheScald
Us barbaric types dooon't buuuy flowwwer's... we pick them from the neighbor's yard. Happy Women's Day! Link to comment
Domi
It's broader in scope than Valentines and Mother's Day combined. It's just a day to adore womanhood as a whole, irregardless of what is their relation to you. I mean, I sent congratulations to all my female relatives, and gave Kira a little present. If I were working I'd be congratulating my co-workers as well, or fellow students etc. Link to comment
Western Paladin
Wow, I totally spaced on this. I blame living in Australia and being behind the rest of the Western world timewise. Link to comment
berelinde
Works for me. I blame being American. I don't think I need to emphasize how unintentionally clueless we are about international customs. Link to comment
Domi
Ah, every country has its own traditions. I had no idea what Thanksgiving or Mother's Day were till Santa-Barbara and Dynasty hit TV back home. ANd I was in my late teens back then. Link to comment
Gabrielle
So its a non-American thing? Hell I really don't keep track of American holidays much less foreign ones. Link to comment
berelinde
ANd I was in my late teens back then. I'm in my late 30's. Oh well, better late than never. Link to comment
BigRob
And my not (quite) belated greetings on Women's Day. Let there have been chocolates and sundry flowers for all. Link to comment
Miloch
So its a non-American thing? Hell I really don't keep track of American holidays much less foreign ones. This says it was popularised in the former Soviet Union as a socialist/Marxist political event. Judging from the list halfway down the page, it is celebrated mostly in Communist or former Communist countries. So I guess that explains why lots of us haven't heard of it . Also I've been completely ignorant of the International Men's Day in November. What are we supposed to get instead of flowers? I'd like a case of wine, I think. Link to comment
berelinde
The link you provide gives about 6 possible dates for International Men's Day. Are you sure you want to wait until November? There's probably at least one closer on the calendar. Link to comment
Domi
What are we supposed to get instead of flowers? (giggles) Believe it or not, but the most popular gift all through grade school on Feb 23 (Russia's "Men's Day") was a pacifier and a spoon. Now, that I'm adult, it makes eerie sense somehow! Kulyok
Heh. In the company where I am working we gave our men large, colorful books about pirates for this February 23rd. With treasure maps, Johnny Depp pictures and everything. An eye-patch included. Link to comment
