SubtleMods: 5E Spellcasting Rules Conversion

The numbers above were taken on a modified version of SoB, which I forgot: I'd overwritten all the mxsplXXX.2da files with my preferred tables.  So I redid all those today with a purely vanilla SoB v5.40 + your two new files above.  Will summarize the observations, since they pretty much match with the details above.

  • In general, WIS 18 gives divine casters a 2/2/2/0 boost to casts with SoB 2013, not the 2/2/1/1 I expected.  This is consistent though.
  • Paladins don't get any boosts from WIS 18 or Cha 18 for that matter.  They show slots == casts at level 15.
  • Rangers didn't get spells when I bumped their level to 15, but show the right number of slots.  Can't test their casts.
  • So the Swash > Cleric thing above isn't restricted to RR classes.  Tried a Fighter 7 > Cleric 17 today and they are showing 10/9/9/5/5/3/2.  The first 3 levels should be 7/7/7 if it stuck to the 2/2/2 bonus from WIS 18 I saw above.  Something is being miscalculated about dual class casters it looks like.  Obligatory grainy phone pic: Imgur.
  • Multi-classed F/C shows no problems, other than 2/2/2 instead of 2/2/1/1

Other observation is that there's no real difference between an SoB with me replacing the mxspl* files and the vanilla SoB with your files.  They both respect the tables I put in myself for 5E Spellcasting.  This is good to see.

Hope this helps.  I'll give Mages and Bards a quick test too.

Mages and bards.  Tried both generalist and specialist mages.

  • Bards, T > M dual, F/M multi all show expected casts but with the 2/2/2 bonus again for INT 18.  I forgot to check the T > M at a higher level than M 1, unfortunately.
  • Pure, base Mage has a weird table.  It gets one extra slot at each level, but the correct number of casts (correct = 2/2/2).  Here's a level 7 that should have 4/3/2/1 slots but has 5/4/3/2: Imgur - this is likely confusion between me using the base Mage table instead of what is in 5E.
  • Both specialist mages show weird tables.  The Gnome F/I multi is the less weirdness, but here it is at F 6/I 6: Imgur - should be 5/3/3 slots which is +1 on a 4/2/2 mage, but is 7/5/4 slots.  This has to be conflict between my vanilla mage table use conflicting with SoB expecting 5E tables?!
  • The Enchanter is just bizarre: Imgur - I have no idea what's going on with level 4 there.

I'm going to play with just 5E and the vanilla tables I have installed.  That looks fine modulo I think an extra cast at level 1.  Otherwise the extra slots from WIS and from the magical items for arcane casters works for me with the more restrictive casts.

Happy to keep testing SoB variants though if you have more.  It's not very time consuming given the folder copies I've made.  Cheers.

As a final point of comparison, here's 5E with the tweaked vanilla tables I'm using but no SoB: Imgur

This is a Swashbuckler 7 / Cleric 17 for testing, who has a vanilla table of 7/7/7/7/5/3/2, but with the cap-at-5 rule I put in the table that becomes 5/5/5/5/5/3/2 casts in 5E.  2/2/1/1 from WIS 18 then makes it 7/7/6/6/5/3/2 slots.  The slots match up correctly and the casts have one extra at level 1.  This one extra is also there at other levels I checks for this dual, and is also there for a Swash / Mage dual. 

I am happy with that one extra cast as everything else matches up exactly as it should, same for other classes though I didn't look at Ranger / Paladin.

I like this setup: capped at 5 but vanilla casts table.  WIS/Magic items give only extra slots, no casts.  Feels like a good mix.  Divine casters get the WIS bonus while arcanes get to use the (limited) magic items.

@subtledoctor Do you know if these Protection From Spell effects in saves are coming from this mod?  Near Infinity screenshot

Asking because in each case the spell pointed to begins with "d5" (D5Z299G.SPL here), which could also be a coincidence but I thought maybe you're using these to track state in the save.  In every case I've looked at the spell resource doesn't exist which is why I thought it could be state.  No problems if they're needed state, just trying to identify the source.

Every single caster has them, divine or arcane, single/dual/multi.  But none are present on non-caster characters.

E:  I see a bunch of opcode 206 usage in semi_spont, but I don't grok BG modding, so.

Yes. "D5Z" is the prefix for spell files relating to 5E casting. The mod uses a fairly brute-force method to make the casting method work: there is a spell that uses op171 to give you a clone of a wizard spell. The clone spells end in "i" like D5Z299i. ("i" for "innate" because they are innate versions of wizard or cleric spells.) The spells that give you the innate clones end in "g" like D5Z299g. ("g" for "give.")

Every time you cast a spell - any spell - it removes all of your spells, and then tries to give you back all the spells. I.e. it casts all ~600 or so "g" spells. BUT, you have op206 immunity to most of them. In fact you start out with 206 immunity to all of them. When you use the "Prepare Spells" ability and then rest, a script runs upon waking which removes the 206 protection for any spells memorized in your spellbook at that moment. Then when it casts every "g" spell, only the ones you had memorized actually work.

When you use the "Prepare Spells" ability again, and change out your memorized spells, it reapplies 206 protection against all spells. Then the script removes it as to your new memorized spells. So then a different subset of "g" spells gives you a different subset of "i" spells.

(Separately, and parallel to this, the game is using a proficiency to track your spellcasting slots. The number of casting slots is multiplied by the number of "g" spells, so it actually casts about 6,000 subspells every time you cast a spell. Like I say, brute force. It's crazy... but it works!

Hmm, that one's tough. I can't reproduce the install error, so it's hard to troubleshoot. I'm not entirely clear from your post what the actual error is. And I don't know why it's mentioning "*.2da" (I searched for the phrase "*.2da" in all of the 5E code and it doesn't appear, but maybe it's just something about the Weidu reports the error...?)

I installed MnG 5.12.7 and FnP 0.85.15, since those are new and I uploaded them without broad cross-mod testing. But 5E installs fine after them. So I uninstalled them and installed some other likely suspects from your change-log: Artisan Kits, Chaos Sorcerer, and Tome & Blood, all together. But 5E installs fine after those ones as well! I could add MnG and FnP to that bundle, but if each set doesn't cause problems on its own, I don't think they are likely to cause problems in combination.

Of course, that's hard to say for sure since I don't know what the exact problem is. It could be down to one of the other mods... ROT always gives me pause for being one of the 'big old mods,' and I've never heard of WhinHill... Can you maybe post your actual kitlist.2da file? (Or paste its contents into a post?) In fact I'm not entirely sure kitlist.2da is actually the problem here, so focusing on that change-log could be barking up the wrong tree. Could you post a bit more of the 5E .debug file, including the ~50 lines before and after the error?

EDIT - well, what do you know, when I install

  • Chaos Sorceer

...then indeed 5E fails to install with the same error. OK! Now that I've reproduced the problem I should be able to fix it. Might take a day or two.

When I updated ADD_KIT_EX in MnG/FnP, apparently the new version leaves parts of kitlist.2da in a state that 5E casting doesn't like. It is fixed in version 1.15. (That also led me to realize that, even when it was working, there were aspects pf the 5E Casting code that were not great. Those bits are improved here as well.)

Hello, when trying to install 5e casting after Olvyn Spells I get this error.

ERROR: illegal 1-byte read from offset 156 of 154-byte file SPPR149.spl

Stopping installation because of error.

What spell is that? The smallest .SPL file should be 202 bytes; is Olvyn’s mod adding a spell with a header but no effects? Maybe there’s some EEex weirdness going on? 

You could try just removing SPPR149 from your override folder, installing 5E, then putting it back. Whatever spell it is won’t work with the 5E memorization system, but it doesn’t seem like it will work anyway, if it has no effects…
