Guest Mage Problems

I have quite a few mods installed, but I can't track down this bug's source, and it seems specifically related to going from one campaign to the next. I guess it's not the biggest problem since I can get around it, but it's deeply annoying.

Imoen in BG2 can't use mage scrolls. They are all red. The same goes for Aerie and Edwin. No mage can use mage scrolls. If I start a new game in BG2? It works fine. It only does not work on an ongoing EET game. The stupid thing is, they can still learn spells from scrolls, just not use them.

I'm honestly not sure how to even attempt to troubleshoot this. I have played from BG1 to SOA twice and it happened both times. (I tested it the second time by starting a new game in SOA, not realizing the problem was likely in my save) I even changed mods between them, got rid of some that caused minor problems and were sorta related to mages. It has to be something baked into the save, right? Something in there is preventing mages from being able to properly use scrolls when they hit SOA.

Here's my mod list. Mods that are new, so I don't think they're the problem: Dual To Kit, AionZ's house rules, Faiths and Powers, Derat's Kits.

The only difference between these two screenshots is that one is a new game with an imported save and one is from an EET save that's played through BG1 and SOD just waking up in Irenicus's dungeon. Exact same mod loadout.

I had a hunch and I just checked: I had the same problem in SoD. I just didn't notice it at the time for some reason, possibly because I'd already loaded up my mages with spells whereas Imoen's seem to have reset between BG1 and BG2. So the problem starts the moment BG1 ends.

Did you do a ctrl-R on the character(s) at some point? Or change thigns with EEKeeper? Or, does anyone know if EET itself does something equivalent to ctrl-R whne moving between campaigns?

Just to be clear: if I read your post correctly, scrolls are usable when you start a new game in the SoD/SoA campaign, but they are not usable when you transition a game directly from BG1 into SoD or SoA?

(Btw learning spells from scrolls is a different mechanism from casting spells from scrolls. The former relies on the exclusion flags in the spell file, while the latter relies on the exclusion flags in the item file. It's totally possible to restrict one but not the other.)

If you are able to, can you compare the two saves, one where Imoen can use the scroll and one where she cannot use the scroll, and tell us what the "SPECIFIC" value is for Imoen's character?

Since I'm not getting an answer, I'll clarify a potential theory:

Both Might & Guile and the thief HLAs in Refinements v4 set a SPECIFIC value on rogues. This SPECIFIC value is then removed if/when you choose the 'Use Magical Device' feat or HLA. And it is removed for all magic-using classes by default at level 1, for the case of dual-classing.

If something about the chapter progression in EET is messing with SPECIFIC values, then that is very much something I want to know about.

(OTOH, as I think about it, if the value is removed then the bug people would experience would be more people able to use scrolls - not more people unable to use scrolls. So this is probably just a red herring. Still, if anyone has experience of this bug, or of not seeing this bug, it would be good to know.)

Actually, I wasn't. I had to just remove Transitions, remod, and start over. Nothing short of removing Transitions fixed it.

So removing it and continuing didn't do it?  All that's left are strings at that point, AFAIK.  I'm very sorry you had such issues.  It is a puzzler, but Transitions does absolutely nothing with the magic system.  There's nothing in there that would do it, that I can conjure in my mind.  I'll always keep this in the back of my mind as I work on version 2, but I'm at a loss as to what it could possibly be.

I try not to remove mods from a game in progress because I've had really nasty problems with it before. Especially not if they've already been involved in a bug. But I'd also decided I wanted to remove some other things at the same time, so it wasn't such a problem pulling out Transitions while I was doing that.

@Lauriel This is a wild theory, but at the transition to SoD, weird things are done by the engine to the (N)PCs: e.g. if they are wearing the Helm of Change Alignment, their changed alignment becomes their base alignment (taking the helmt off then gives them the reverse alignment while not wearing it); also when using a savegame with my dog NPC but without the mod being installed upon transition, he turned into a grey colored human although he is clearly specified as animal and dog in the cre file.

So here is my wild guess: since Transitions kind of 'messes' with the beginning of SoD by making Korlasz' Crypt optional etc., maybe something gets mixed up by the engine. Still I'd assume that this would not happen with Transitions alone and that it is a compatibility thing between mods. Frankly, I have no idea what could cause this, and how Transitions would be involved - other than by confusing whatever engine mysteries are supposed to happen at the beginning of Korlasz' Crypt.

It would almost have to be.  I've had folks use it successfully...relatively...all the way through.  I've never had an issue - but I don't use mods that redo the magic system since I have enough trouble working with the one that's already in there.  I'm guessing it's that OR (something I thought of just a bit ago) maybe he wasn't in EET and the added bhaalspawn power messed things up.  I probably built that in EET and BGEE might be angry at me for that.  That's what I'm going to test first, at least.  It's the ONLY thing remotely close that I can think of.  SCS (I think) messes with it's ability to stay in BG2EE in EET, so that I have to work on, too.  Might be Wheels...I'm not sure.  I don't think it's Wheels since I have that loaded and didn't have an issue.  I'll also see if Imoen's components dealing with magic that I've removed may have left something behind.  I'm hoping it's the bhaalspawn power.  That would be an easy fix.
