necromancer's trouble confusion

So i've been trying to do this quest for about two hours, but i just can't get it. I talk to the person in nashkel, the one outside the headquarters and hear the conversation near the old kegs. i go into the building near the convo and my only option is for the necromancer to attack me, he then flees after one good hit, leaving behind a cat.... i'm so confused, i've tried so many variations my head hurts and i just want to finish this quest.

@LinaParamedic sounds all good so far. There should be a way to follow the mage down into his quarters, inside the rotten house where you met him.
