First, I mean Second, try at a big(ish) EET install

Recommended Posts

I got EET to install and running on my iPad and finally started a full-trilogy game. I thought I would post some of my observations here.

EDIT! I played through the BG1 portion of EET with a ranger/psion, and then reinstalled EET with even more added stuff, after updating almost all of my own mods. I've started describing the run over here. I have slimmed down the BGEE modlist to ONLY Sirene and UB:

I dug into the code for Rose, Drake, and Tenya to  make them installable on BG2EE after EET instead of on BGEE before EET. We'll see how that works out. I also added some stuff... the number of mod components is up to almost 700 now:

I'm trying something VERY different with my own mods, here:  I unified all of Faiths & Powers and moved it to the very end of the group of kit mods, after Might & Guile and Will to Power. I also moved Will to Power after MnG. And moved 5E Spellcasting after all of them. i would not counsel anyone to do the same thing with the pre-release versions of my mods... yet. There is a major issue with the MnG-FnP-5E install order, which I am working out at this moment. Once I fix this last compatibility issue, and play the game a bit to scope out any wayward bugs, I will make release versions and it will be a simpler, nicer install experience. (I've worked out the issues with the kit limit... you can install all of FnP last, as long as you have fewer than 195 kits when you get to FnP.)

As I mentioned elsewhere before getting threadjacked, I am torn between two different Charnames here: one, a ranger with the Mage Hunter kit who will dual-class to a custom cleric kit which grants the freedom to choose some of the spells you can know; and two, a multiclass ranger/psion from my Will to Power mod. I played both characters through the first several hours of the game, up to the point of going after the bandit camp. I'll describe my impressions of the modded game below.

I tend to shuffle through various NPCs, generally changing out 3-4 people in each chapter of the game. This is in part because I want to see a bunch of content, and in part because I want interactions later on to make sense. E.g. Skie plays a significant role in SoD, and I have Lava's mod that brings her into BG2, so I want to make sure I spend at least a bit of time with her in BG1. (But, there are issues - see below.) Or, with the Kivan BG2 mod, he walks up to you in right after you escape Chateau Irenicus and mentions that he knew you from adventuring before you were kidnapped. So I want to have Kivan on for a while. Conversely, there is no Kagain content after beating Sarevok, so I feel no strong urge to take him into my party. (I tend to prefer Good NPCs over Evil ones - I truly appreciate all of the creatiev work that has gone into mod NPCs with a variety of attitudes, but at the emnd of the day if an NPC projects an attitude that I personally wouldn't want to spend time around, then I often prefer not to spend time with that NPC in my party. As you'll see, this can cause some difficulties when it comes to class balance in party management.

Before I get into the description of the game so far I will note that I soon need to choose which of these two Charnames I will continue with. They are very similar - a ranger, and a slower-levelling ranger with some extra abilities. I will say that the ranger/psion has so far, in BG1, been much more enjoyable. While the first couple level-ups were a bit slow, it is nice to have useful extra abilities at this early stage. I have so far focused on telekinetic and psychometabolic abilities, and being able to (for example) freeze one ogre out of three, or one flind out of five, in basically every encounter, is very useful. The Mage Hunter has special abilities to cast Breach, or raise a Minor Spell Deflection. These are bascially useless and this character is really not very different from a fighter. Of course, over time (a lot of time), I think this situation will be reversed: a ranger dualled to cleric will end up with lots of useful high-level magic in mod/late BG2, while the multiclass ranger/psion will probably slow down and lack truly powerful abilities. So there's a bit of a question of how willing I am to suffer boredom now, for more power later.

Next up: chapters one through three. There are a LOT of little quests around the Sword Coast, which I have found very diverting. I'll describe them here. On the other hand there are a few mod-related hiccups as well, which I will make note of.

So: starting out. Candlekeep is annoying, but I run around and get my 50xp here, 50xp there. Leave and meet Imoen. First order of business: using the new version of NPC_EE I can spec out Imoen from level zero. Figuring she might have some mysterious magical abilities from... somewhere... I set her up as a multiclass sorcerer/thief. (This is a cool idea, but as we will see it is really slow going at the beginning of the game.) Then I meet Grey the dog. Grey has, like, 40 hit points. He is a beast. Literally and figuratively! Good to have around for protection for my scrawny level-1 butt.

Per my usual BG1 practice, Imoen and Charname take a wrong turn while heading to the Friendly Arm Inn, and end up in Beregost instead. There are a lot of things to do:

  • there is Firebead Elvenhair who needs a book; we get it for him
  • there is a guy named Marl who accosts us in Feldepost's Inn, we settle him down
  • there is a guy who sees visions of ethereal beetles, we help him out
  • there is a guy who has been turned into a jelly, we cure him
  • there is a family missing a necklace, we help them find it
  • there is an assassin in the Red Sheaf, we take him out
  • there is a group of adventurers who need help with a math problem about splitting loot, we solve it
  • there is a woman whose husband is missing, we travel south and find his body
  • down there a girl is missing her bunny, we convince an ogre to give it back
  • there is a drunk man passed out near the church, we alert the priest
  • there is a house infested with giant spiders, we clear them out and rescue some boots and wine

Notably, the only bits of this that are actually dangerous are the Red Sheaf assassin and the house full of spiders. Alas, the spiders kill Grey, and we have no money for resurrection. That's okay I guess. While I like the idea of Grey, he seems designed more for players who tend to have fewer than six party members. I always have trouble shifting party members around during a run, so I don't really have need of Grey. I will remember him fondly.

We head north, kill an ogre, and take a couple belts from him. We find a dying mailman and take his mailbag, promising to deliver his last letters. We finally find the Friendly Arm Inn, but explore around it first - we are attacked by some hobgoblins and take a Flamedance ring from one of them. Then we return the ring to Joia, defeat Tarnesh, return a belt to Unshey, deliver a letter to Nessie, and give spider/boots/wine to Landrin. Whew! Even though most of the XP from all of the above "quests" was split three ways, rather than two (because I had Grey in the party), it is still enough to get to level 2. Even though Imoen and I are both multiclassed, we both get to level 2/2.

As a psion, I started with one power in each of five disciplines:

  • Mind Ward
  • Project Force
  • Static Discharge
  • Adrenaline Rush
  • Object Reading

A thief/psion would get a couple more powers right off the bat, but as a ranger/psion that's all I get until level 2. At level 2 I chose some more telekinetic abilities: Immobilize and Inertial Barrier. This gives me access to a bit of extra defense, and a chance to Hold one enemy roughly once per encounter. I'm still mostly just a ranger. But these can be a bit useful.

I finally meet Khalid and Jaheira, and they join my party. I use NPC_EE and a bit of console commands, and set Jaheira up as a fighter 6 dualled to Totemic Druid. And I set up Khalid as a Cleric of Torm 6 dualled to fighter. Clerics of Torm have a focus on defensive magic, which I think fits Khalid's disposition - although, importantly, I will not see their first-class abilities for a long while. For now they are basically a 2nd-level druid and a 2nd-level fighter with a some extra hit points. This makes sense as they are supposed to be experienced adventurers who can mentor Charname at these very early levels, while still functioning as low-level characters appropriate for these early quests. One thing that becomes clear (and was made clear when Grey was in the party): having lots of hit points means there are lots of hit points to lose, which means they can tend to require lots of healing - and I don't have lots of healing. I ended up with J&K walking around most of the time with about 2/3 of their hp, and spending more money than usual on temple healing.

With Charname's mentors along, we headed south toward Nashkel. We picked up Helga on the way, who is a cleric of Haela Brightaxe. Neutral in alignment, all about the thrill of battle... not very different from, say, a cleric of Tempus that you have in Branwen. But a new NPC! so, sure. I spec her out as a multiclass fighter/cleric since there is literally dialogue that goes "you seem almost more fighter than cleric." Then in Beregost we round out the party with Finch the bookworm Cleric of Deneir. I spec her as a multiclass cleric/mage. We quickly shoot over to High Hedge to introduce ourselves and cure Melicamp of chickenitis. And then we go to Nashkel.

So far everything seems to work well, I did not see any bugs, and there are lots of things to do and people to talk to. Very fun!

Just checking, you are aware Grey can follow as a "7th" party member? Not saying that's a reason to have him along.

Yeah, I know, and I should probably test that sort of thing. But he died, and I didn't have money to resurrect him at the time, and he is a melee-only doggie and it just seems like, even as a familiar-type pet (maybe even moreso in that role) it would be a fair amount of work keeping him alive and healed. It's like Wilson in BG2EE - I like the idea of a bear or doggie harrying my enemies... but I never find myself actually using characters with such prominent tactical limits. (Except maybe Minsc -  but I don't often keep Minsc around very long.)

I missed a good dog because I didn't read the readme properly and noticed he joined the party during mys test run... and decided to ditch him in my actual run...

SD,

I see you're using SoB to keep XP in check:

How about gold?

Also, is Sleep working? It was broken when I tried:

I haven't done anything to keep gold in check, and I am indeed seeing a fair amount of gold. As a sneak peek, the game is actually at the entrance to the Bandit Camp at the moment and I have like 15K gp. It seems like a lot... though to be fair in the vanilla game you can end up with shocking amounts of gold. I don't actually know how far ahead of the curve I am. But the areas between the Nashkel mines and the Bandit Camp definitely gave me more xp and gp than usual. More details to come.

Sleep is not not working... but it's duration is unreliable. I am not sure it is connected to SR specifically, or something else in combination with SR. Notably, I am playing on the 2.5 patch so the theory that it might be a 2.6 change is out the window. This is a good reminder to jump into NI and take a look at it. I'd like to fix it so that I can use that spell! And then I can migrate the fix back to SR. (As @Graion Dilach noted, these big install and game logs are good for catching issues that might not be apparent from more routine testing. I'm only a few hours into this game and I've already put out a significant update to NPC_EE and I'm working on some improvements to Will to Power as well...)

EDIT to add: I actually change Sleep (SPWI116.spl) into a single-target spell, called Drowse. And I change PW:Sleep at 2nd level into the traditional Sleep spell. And what i am seeing is that the duration of Drowse is working fine - it is the old Sleep spell, now at 2nd level, that has problem. Which is just to say that the problem is not specific to SPWI116, but it persists even with a recreated Sleep spell at SPWI220. I don't know exactly what that means yet, but it's a bit more information to work with.

EDIT 2 - looks like SR has the new EE "wake on hit" parameter set, but it also applies a contingency which casts SPWI116D "when hit." My one Drowse spell similarly uses a contingency for wake-on-hit, but the condition is "when take damage." Maybe there's something in that distinction?

@Chitown Willie do you have a game with this unreliable Sleep spell installed? If so could you upload your SPWI116.spl? I can make some changes and send it back to you for testing...

Okay I'm going to go a little bit out of order here and give some mod feedback because it just popped into my head. Slight spoilers ahead!

I am playing with "The Calling," a mod hosted here on G3. This mod includes a quest that springs from the bit where you help Thalantyr change Melicamp from a chicken back into a human. It seems basically like a MacGuffin quest - you have to find these powerful cursed bracers. It's a nice jumping-off point, after all this is powerful and dangerous, ancient magic - these things are Netherese, everyone's favorite magical bugbear (whoops, can't use that term figuratively, there are actual bugbears in my game).

Anyway you have to find a scrying device to find this MacGuffin, and for that you need some gems, and when Thalantyr gives me the quest I'm like "okay, what gems?" And he's like "gems my boy, you know, gems, the shiny crystally things." And I'm like "yeah duh, I know what a gem is but like which gem in particular do you need me to bring back here?" And he's like "it doesn't matter, just get three gems, any gems will do." And I'm wondering "Are you sure? Because in my experience in a past life as a higher-level adventurer to the south of here I found that you usually need to use more expensive gems for more powerful and/or successful magical effects." And Thalantyr goes "Dude relax, nobody is judging you, listen: gems are kind of see-through, right? And they have colors? And color is light, and light is what lets you see. And seeing something far away is 'divination' and we need to make a divination thingy. So just get me a couple gems, okay? Any old gems will do. I promise."

And so i spend some time and I literally collect one of every kind of gem that exists on the Sword Coast. (Thank you, Gnoll Fortress!) And I bring them back to Thalantyr, and I'm like "Look at all the gems I got!" And he says "Great, great, now give me three of them." And I'm like "Okay, which three?" And he's like "My dude, seriously, I don't care! Nobody cares. Nothing is riding on this choice. I gave you a little quest and you did some very nice fetching. Go ahead and give yourself a pat on the back, and then close your eyes and give me three gems at random, okay? It's going to be fine."

So I give him three gems and he makes the thingy and he goes "Gods, you did a shitty job choosing gems for this device. It's a scrying device, dude. How could you be so bad at this? Were you dropped on your head as a baby or something?"

And it's just kind of annoying. Like, maybe it's meant to be funny? It is kind of funny now, in the telling. Maybe it's characterization, to show that Melicamp isn't a bad wizard, he just has a shitty boss who likes to move the goalposts on him? That could work, from a writing perspective. Except, here, there actually do seem to be right and wrong answers. Some gems are actually better than others. I reloaded and I choose the three most valuable gems I had - but that didn't get a good result. reloaded again and gave him the three cheapest - no good. I tried giving him the most colorful gems, or all white ones, or all black ones, or all ones named after celestial bodies. Et cetera. I could not find a figure-out-able solution; I just found several gems that work better than the others, based on trial-and-error and reloading.

So, we've had discussions about MacGuffin quests before, recently in the context of giving players reasons to delay starting chapter 3 in BG2. What I tried to get across there is, you can make players feel like they have agency while in fact staying in control of events from off-screen. It's like a game of Three-Card Monte, and it can be similarly rigged: you, the Dungeon Master, i.e. the mod author, i.e. the ad-hoc would-be game developer, can make sure the player always guesses wrong twice and then gets it right on the third time - thereby synchronizing whatever events you need to synchronize to make the story go forward. The player will feel like they 'got it right' but really you have just manipulated things off-screen to get them to the right place at the right time. So things like deadlines that the player can miss - looking at you, Pathfinder - are actually terrible, because it is bad design. It shifts onto the player a responsibility that actually belongs to the people designing the story. It doesn't give the player more 'agency' - in fact it gives them less, because it forces them to tip-toe carefully across some arbitrary threshold that they could leap across with whatever grace or speed they want. Let the player leap across that threshold whenever and however they please, and still tell the story you want them to experience, including possibly making them think they were too slow if that's the story. This is harder but it's better design.

I don't mean to rag on The Calling too much here, but I just want to point out that in the moment, the gem thing didn't feel funny or whatever. It mostly felt annoying. If there are right or wrong answers than let the player figure them out - that is giving the player agency. If the answers don't matter and you want the player to experience a funny or mildly-but-jokingly-frustrating scene, then write that scene out making sure the player is in on the joke. Maybe just make every gem be bad. Or have no gems be better or worse than any others, but write different funny dialogue lines relating to each one, giving the player a better reason to try different ones and even maybe reload if they want to get more fun out of it. This some-are-good-some-are-bad with no rhyme or reason to it, seems like a wasted opportunity.

This is a very, very small quibble. It's still a good mod, I'm glad I installed it, and I would install it again. I still haven't actually seen most of it. But I had thoughts. So.

I was going to continue describing my journey down the Sword Coast to Nashel with my finally full party:

  • Charname
  • Imoen, a sorcerer/thief
  • Khalid, a fighter
  • Jaheira, a druid
  • Helga, a fighter/cleric
  • Finch, a cleric/mage

Honestly, there's not a lot interesting to report about this part of the game. We followed the Coast Way south, we fought a lot of hobgoblins. (What are all these hobgoblins doing hanging out in little cliques in the woods? They should gather together in a city or fortress or something. (Though, that didn't work out too well for the gnolls. Or the xvarts. Or... hmm. Okay actually I guess I can see why the hobs choose guerilla tactics.))

We got to Nashkel, took out an assassin, geared up, did some very light questing. (NB there is a thing in the Naskel Fair that requires enchanted weapons to hit, and I don't have any and that was a bit rude. Come to think of it, a mod - I think EEEE - put a monster that can only be hit by magic weapons in the first wilderness area in the game, just outside Candlekeep. Which was really quite rude.) I successfully avoided Noober (I just can't, anymore) and then went into the mines. This was largely unmodded, so largely uninteresting, apart from an added kobold hero? at the choke-point down by the spiders. That was cool. I killed Mulahey, and pretended not to see Xan - though that may be a mistake. As we will see, I am running into some party-management issues, which are exacerbated by the failure of some mods to work correctly. But at any rate I have no room for Xan at this point. I may manufacture a run-in with him later. Ordinarily I would bring someone into the mines who can die heriocally in the meat grinder of Mulahey's skeleton reinforcements. But this time around I wanted to keep everyone alive. So I pass Xan by.

I get out of the mines in the Valley of the Tombs, and fight Lamalha's mercenary party there. Gosh this fight is difficult. NTotSC adds two more members to their party, and they use BG2 tactics: plenty of disabling magic, plus thieves going invisible and sneaking around to flank me. Plus lots of poison arrows. I'm level 3 now but still I only have a very few 2nd-level spells, and basically nothing that can dispel invisibility, and Lamalha is hitting me with Hold Person and I don't have anything that can dispel that.

This makes me realize something about Imoen. I generally don't play with sorcerers - I don't like the concept in general, I don't like the 3Eism being shoehorned into 2E, etc. But I do think it is a compelling character concept for Imoen, that fits her progression from here to SoD to BG2 to ToB. But because I don't usually play sorcerers, I forgot that they don't get higher-level spells until one level after mages do.  And with a multiclass sorcerer that takes twice as long. Imoen isn't going to see a 2nd-level spell until she is at level 4/4! Which is, like, dozens of hours into the game. So, fair warning for those who play with the Tome & Blood mod: multiclass sorcerers are a nice thing to have in the game, and very fun in BG2. But man they can be a bit of a slog in BG1. I look at that party lineup above and my brain goes "yeah, Imoen is the 2nd arcane caster" but she's really not. She is basically a thief with a couple cantrips.

I want an actual arcane caster in my party. So I clear the Valley of the Tombs and the Gibberling Mountains and rescue some poor sap who is right at death's door and needs healing urgently and must be carried to a healer... a 72-hour march away? Instead of the temple 16 hours away? I turn in some quests in Nashkel and then head north. As I pass through Beregost I deposit Imoen into the care of Firebead Elvenhair. This adventuring stuff is super dangerous, and Imoen is not very skilled at using magic, she needs a bit of training from an experienced mage. Like Firebead! So she stays.

Now, here I am in Beregost, and I'm looking for an arcane caster. And there is one corner of the town that I have avoided exposing from the fog of war -

Oh yeah: something went wrong with this mod install, the towns are supposed to be free of the fog of war but they aren't, and they first Cloakwood Forest area is supposed to be available but it isn't. This is annoying... but not the most annoying hiccup with this install.

So now I go toward the northeast part of the town and steel myself for the sudden appearance of everyone's favorite cut-scene queen, Neera. I walk around for a bit, try approaching from different angles, but... nothing. This is weird. I know I'm playing on the iOS version of BG2EE, but EET imported the BG1 resources from the desktop version of a combined BGEE+SoD game. and in the desktop version of BGEE/SoD, Neera is not a paid add-on, she is part of the base game. But she is not here. This is odd. And it is a blow to my potantial plans for future party management. (FYI, this sort of blow is going to be a running theme of this thread.) I don't have a ton of good-aligned arcane casters:

  • Imoen the slow sorcerer - benched for now
  • Dynaheir - don't want her and Minsc taking up two slots for the entire game
  • Quayle a cleric/mage
  • Xan a fighter/mage whoops, already passed him by
  • Garrick a bard BORIIIING
  • Eldoth a bard nope, details later
  • Rose a bard
  • Indira a fighter/mage
  • Valerie OH WAIT -

I forgot to mention: one hiccup in Nashkel is that Valerie is not there. The mod is installed, but... she's just not in the game. Just like Neera. Hmmm... maybe it's a Cowled Wizard plot? Maybe they are trapped on the Ice Island?

So after dropping off Imoen I pick up Rose. This is a cool NPC, no romance or anything schmaltzy like that, just a party member with BG1-level interjections and a bit of back-story that has been coming out. Reminds me a bit of the Keto mod in BG2. I've never gotten Rose to work on BGEE before, but with a bit of .tp2 surgery I got it working nicely. If anyone is interested I could provide it; if anyone knows who has the rights maybe we could update it officially.

Then I took Samuel to the temple in the FAI, and then Khalid and Jaheira left the party. I have things to do here, and they mumbled something about Harper business or whatever. I imagine I'll run into them again some time. I have to say, I am sad to see Jaheira go only because a Totemic Druid is So. Damn. Good. in BG1. There is basically no other summoning available at this stage, so any summoning is super useful, tactically. And the modified Goodberry spell is super useful for healing, and Entangle is super useful... basically druids are amazing in BG1 but Auntie Jaheira had to go away and the only other option is Faldorn and bleh.

Anyway so now it's Charname and Helga, and Rose, and Finch. We're all multiclass, all level 3. Let's head back down south and talk to Minsc.

Come to think of it, a mod - I think EEEE - put a monster that can only be hit by magic weapons in the first wilderness area in the game, just outside Candlekeep. Which was really quite rude.

If you mean the very easily avoidable non-respawning bugbears in the bottom right corner of the Crossroads map, that's from SotSC.

Valerie will leave Nashkel if you clear out the mines, since she's there to investigate it as well.

Also, Neera and Dorn atleast are linked to DLC values in the UI lua file. Been a while but DragonspearUI++ had a bug for a long while that it deleted the DLC checks and effectively put them to disabled mode that way.

I encountered the missing of EE NPCs issue in previous game, and have kept a record of how to solve it:

Spoiler

I also experienced the missing EE npcs (Neera and Dorn) which could be related to Dragonspear UI. Problem solved with the addition of the following in BGEE.LUA file:

purchasedDLC = {}
purchasedDLC[1] = 1
purchasedDLC[2] = 1
purchasedDLC[3] = 1
purchasedDLC[4] = 1
purchasedDLC[5] = 1

You can activate it midgame.

Think he refers to a werebadger in the bottom left corner just outside Candlekeep.

No - bugbears are tough, but not too tough to handle. There is a werebadger in the far southwest of the very first Candlekeep map, the one where you are attacked by Sarevok. If you don’t know it’s there and it sees you, there’s a good chance you will have zero options for handling it, except I guess to immediately map transition to a different area eight hours away.

I don’t mean to complain too much about it - it’s a bit rude, but not bad, per se. Once I’ve leveled up and saw more werebadgers, and had some +1 weapons, they were okay. (I set +1 weapons to be “mastercraft” rather than actually magical, but thankfully I still set them to hit as +1, figuring they have some exotic alloy that can hit magical creatures. If I used the SCS component for “fine” weapons, things would be much more difficult. At level 5/5 I only have about six actually enchanted weapons: a bow, a dagger, a short sword, two longswords, and two war hammers.)

Hmm, I’m pretty sure she was missing when I first passed through. But I’ll double-check.

@xiaoleiwen thanks for that info on the BD NPCs! Maybe I’ll pick up Neera at some point after all. Weird thing is, Baeloth did appear, and try to bully his way into my party. So this doesn’t affect all of them.

EDIT - though, now I think about it, I’m not sure I can edit the .lua file in an iOS game. Especially since we are talking about a value in BGEE.lua when I’m playing EET in the BG2EE iOS app… I assume EET would have imported that data at install time… and it’s the first mod installed…
