Issues with and questions about my BGT install

Hello. I’ve got a load  of questions about my current BGT install with far too many mods.

I’m probably going to ramble on a bit so thanks in advance to anyone that actually reads this.

 

 

Install order based on BWP PDF 19.2 with 260 ish mods being installed. The mod versions installed were the newest ones at the time, around December 2022. Some have already been updated since then which might have fixed a few of the issues.

Main differences in install order compared to the PDF are that I ended up installing Ascension much earlier as it wouldn’t install properly when I tried it where suggested in the PDF, and I also moved The Calling earlier and added Lava’s Bridge’s Block mod which isn’t mentioned in the PDF because its relatively new.

I manually applied a lot of the BWP fixpack fixes prior to installation as running the fixpack in my ‘extracted mods’ folder wasn’t getting all the fixes applied.

Installation was via Project Infinity, the install sequence is about 1350 lines, which is probably far too many mods.

 

Project Infinity issue - not copying some files

There’s a pretty specific mod/PI issue I found, tisunpack.exe and oggdec.exe, and possibly NeJEAreaSounds.bat, from Vlad’s compilation aren’t being copied across, so I just copied them manually before starting the install. I think the same thing happens with the Xulaye mod - oggdec.exe isn’t copied across and so one of the components can’t be installed.

 

Editing VCv21.tp2

The component numbers shown in the PDF don’t match the components available to select in PI. That’s because, to use it in conjunction with the BG2 fixpack,  Setup-VCv21 needs editing a lot. The edits are in the Big World Fixpack but running that in the extracted mods folder won’t edit that tp2. The Big World installer will sort it though, so I did a minimal install using Vlad’s compilation and BG2 fixpack and made a copy of the edited VCv21 tp2 file. Replace the original tp2 in the extracted mods folder with the new one and PI will then list components matching those in the PDF.

 

 

Stuff that isn’t quite right - BG1 part (this is up to finishing the getting into Baldur's Gate proper, includes bonehill);

1. Stuttering/lag/the thing I whinge about a lot - its still happening but OK with just 1 bag/container. I tested for this problem a lot during the install and it didn’t seem to be happening. But I was only checking for items added to a bag of holding. Once I’d finished the install and was actually playing the game I found that adding a scroll to any container started the problem. It’s nowhere near as bad this time but putting any type of scroll in a scroll case is problematic. And then it started happening with potions in potion cases too. Bunging everything in one bag of holding seems to be ok though. Weird I know.

 

2. Khalid’s sounds (soundset?) are wrong

I changed them back manually but I’m not sure why they are changed. They get replaced with lines mentioning Leira, a Vlad’s comp npc

 

3. Tweaks Anthology - NPC pairs can separate/send npcs to an Inn - Khalid and Jaheira can be separated but there’s only a dialogue option for Khalid to go to an inn, nothing for Jaheira, she just stays where she is when you kick her out and can rejoin when you speak to her.

 

 

4. Baby wyvern animation changed to adult wyvern

 I copied all the WYVERBA.0000# files created by changelog into the override folder and checked them in NearInfinity and can see the Animation field change between 00001 and 00002.

For my own use, if I comment out the  “WRITE_SHORT 0x0028 4096 // Animation ID” line that should fix it next time I install it, right?

 

5. The items added by Igi’s item mod don’t seem to be affected by the mods I’m using to reducing the value of stuff, so you can make loads of money selling the arrows and potions it adds to creatures, might not bother with it next time, takes 45 minutes to install too.

Any ideas why they aren’t being affect? Im pretty sure the tweaks to prices are after the items are added.

 

6. In my current play-through the Oublek/Brage quest has gone wonky, Oublek has disappeared and Brage’s sister didn’t turn up outside the temple.  I think this has been fixed in the newest version of Brage’s Redemption.

 

7. Infinity animations (710 // More Planescape: Torment Animations25% of relevant non-joinablesv5 BWP Fix) changes affecting NPC class, leading to unintended reputation loss when killed.

IA is changing Zahrdahl’s class (he’s a character from the Secret of Bonehill mod (BHZAHR.CRE)) which is causing a few issues. I think the problem arises from him not having a standard mage animation. He’s a sneaky little bugger and has a peasant animation as you’re not supposed to know he’s anything but a maggot merchant. Infinity animations changes his Class from Mage-1 to Innocent-155 which is then causing an 8 point reputation loss when he’s killed, plus his script is not working. I'll post this on SHSforums when its back. As a work around, after installing IA, if i copied BHZAHR.CRE found in

\BGII - SOA\infinityanimations\backup\710 back into the override folder, this would be the version of the file before IA made any changes?

 

8. DSotSC item DSCHAN04.ITM (Armour of the Sukien) not protecting against all poison attacks

The armour is added by DSoTSC and isn't working quite right - the poison immunity effect on the armour didn’t protect Ajantis from wyvern or spider poison.

Looking at it in NI, there are 2 ‘Immunity to effect (101)’ entries, one for poison (25) and one for intoxication (94), ‘Poison resistance bonus (173)’ and ‘Protection from spell (206)' which references resource AG#TRD.SPL .

Could they (wyverns and spiders) be using an effect that isn’t blocked by the items?

How many poison effects are there?

What do I need to check?

 

 

9. Xvart shamans (shamen?) aren’t casting spells, but the Xvart monks are;

Xvart monk - SVXART, Override script - AGRANDCL.BCS, Default script: DW#PR299.BCS

Xvart Shaman - XVARTPRE, Override script - AGRANDBR.BCS, Race script BPWDASGT.BCS, General script XVART.BCS, Default script: DW#PR354.BCS

Which script would take priority?

10. Zhurlong seems to have vanished before his quest was completed

Pretty sure I didn’t kill him but he’s not in the Burning Wizard. I'd spoken to him and received the quest to get his boots but now he's nowhere to be found. Will using the console to add him back in work/enable quest to be finished?

 

11. Oompah the exploding ogre isnt spawning properly when he’s supposed to attack you. He’s standing where he normally is to begin with, speaking to Gazib makes him explode like normal, then on the 3rd time he doesn’t appear. Gazib has dialogue like he should but then nothing. Not really sure where to start looking at this. Area script?

Garrick can’t use the earring (GTT#BO.ITM) he gets given by Tenya as his wisdom is too low.

Requirement is wisdom > 13 but Garrick’s is only 12

 

 

13. Gavin’s spellbook has 3 ‘Cause Serious Wounds’ spells to pick from. I think this is from SSR and IWDification. SPPR414 and SPPR430

 

 

14. MiH_EQ is changing xp and alignment of mist and poison horrors

15. Protection from Electricity scroll, SCRL5T.ITM, is undroppable.

16. Sphere of Chaos - showing as lvl 6 spell for JA#TAY01.CRE but checking spwi711.spl its lvl 7?

17. Selune’s blade (SBLADE.ITM) has no description - added by BP, checked changelog and never had description - no item dropped though so not sure if its one of those items that doesn’t. Might have just found this accidentally while looking at stuff in NI so can probably be ignored.

 

18.  How does SCS account for F/M/C enemies?

Jabress (DSJABB.CRE) is f/m/c but has no cleric spells, checked with changelog and never had any to start with. Should SCS add these? Not sure how many f/m/c enemies there are in the game, so it might not account for them?

 

19.  I'm getting both the Jarls adventure pack and original versions of the Merchant League quest

edited the 1st post so it hopefully actually makes sense, and added more info to some of the questions.

 

Got another issue - icons stuck on portraits and record screen.

I accidentally used a cursed/spoiled healing potion (either DW#PTN25 OR POTN25) and now Ajantis has the 'cursed' icon showing on his portrait and character record. Right clicking on him lists effects and includes curse but he doesn't seem to actually be under any negative effects and the option for Break enchantment is greyed out when I've gone to a temple to get it removed. Casting break enchatment via a scroll isnt removing it either.

How do i remove the icon and why is it getting stuck in the first place?

Jaheira also has a 'Sleep' icon on her portrait and character record screen. Right clicking to list effects affecting her doesnt list sleep. I'm pretty sure this is leftover from a spell but I have no idea when it appeared, what sepll or who cast it. Again, how can i remove it? Edit something in NI? I tried editing Ajantis (the one in my save game) but this just caused a crash to desktop so i did something very wrong.

Hello!

I won't be able to help you with your issues but I can only recommend to be way, way more selective about your modifications because when you install so many, it is practically guaranteed that you will encounter issues. If you are lucky none of them will be critical (game breaking / CTDs), but minor problems are very likely to be there, and the more modifications you have, the more problems you are likely to meet.

I have also noticed that many of your modifications are outdated, starting with Baldur's Gate Trilogy which has recently hit version 1.23. Unless you're too attached to your ongoing game, I recommend ditching all and make a new plan.

I'd also suggest my own EE-style BG2 GTU, which is fully compatible with BGT.

I'll only answer what I know:

9) Both Xvarts have the generated SCS script assigned so they should be able to sspellcast. It sounds like BPWDASGT prevents reaching the SCS script.

18) If a spellcaster doesn't use the generic Bioware mage/cleric spellcasting scripts but a custom one, SCS leaves that custom scripting in place and will not attempt rewriting the script. The modded FMC you found is probably in this group.

13) One of those spells is caused by the older version of DSotSC, where Cause Serious Wounds was accidentally registered as it's curing counterpart internally (I've fixed this already). Also, the DSotSC-Trilogy spell addition components should be after IWDification spells, because the IWDification spells are in a better shape and DSotSC-Trilogy will skip trying to add spells already added by other mods installed prior.

@Salk your mod is already on my list of stuff to add to my next install, looks good. Yeah i know i've got a lot of stuff and the potential for serious issues increases becaause of that. So far nothing major has gone wrong, just little things, except the lag from portable containers but I can manage that just about. I dont have as much time as I'd like to play the game so I'll keep this install going for a while yet though i've started planning the next one. Planning and then actually doing the install and testing things can take a really long time. I'll probably thin it out as i try different mods and sometimes find I don't like them, usually a personal taste thing. More stuff will get added too. Trying to find the stablest install with the most extra content, mostly extra stuff to do.

@Graion Dilach thanks for the answers. I removed the Race and General scripts from XVARTPRE and the SCS script is now being used. Only an minor issue i know, and it was mostly curiosity as to why it wasnt working but thanks for the fix.

I'm planning my next install so i'll tweak the order/split DSotSC to take into account what you've said.

That FMC is one of the drow characters found at the end of DSotSC. She does have her own custom script - DSJABB.  It references priest spells but she doesnt have any known or memorized so I don't think its doing much. For my next install, if I were to remove the script from the .CRE once DSotSC was installed, am i right in thinking that when I get to installing SCS it would add priest spells and then assign a relevant script?

Using NI to search my current install, the vast majority of creatures with the F/M/C class are demons.

Fighting a 15/15/15 FMC in BG1, with a SCS script might also be a bit of a nightmare, guess i'll find out at some point.

Oublek shouldn't disappear at all. That's weird. I do hope it's not due to Brage's Redemption mod, I wouldn't know how.

Laryssa not showing at all after showing the cursed sword to Nalin should be fixed in the current BR version, yes.

No, you need to assign scripts like MAGE5 and PRIEST5 before SCS to tell it to redo the script.

But if it has a custom script, that might cover more aspects than the mere combat so I'm suddenly not sure how much changing that would break the mod.

@jastey hello, I've just had a look back through an old thread where i mentioned an issue with the merchant league and the only thing i can see is that you pointed out that I was using an older version. So I remembered it wrong, sorry. I am using the newest version on this install, or it was at the time anyway.

I seem to have both the original quest and the modified one from Jarl running at the same time.

I helped him with the druid problem in cloakwood.

Then when i got to Baldur's gate he was waiting where he normally is and starts the quest.

Then, once i was in the Merchant league building Deagan approaches, on the 1st floor and says to meet him in the 3 old kegs.

Going there means you speak to Aldeth again and then, if agreeing to help, transports you back to the Merchant's League.

There are then 2 Aldeth's in the building. Which is an improvement on the last time when there ended up being loads.

Not sure what's happened this time. I'll finish the quest and see what happens, thanks.

Yeah I made sure I got it from the right place. I'm generally pretty careful where I download mods from, try and make sure I'm getting the offical version.

Seems like I can't actually finish the quest, both Aldeths seem to think there are more dopplegangers to kill but i can't find any. Same thing happens even if i console in the JA#DOPP# creatures and kill them too.

Poking around in NI, looking at the bcs for the second floor (AR7229) and I think there are variables checked that i dont have when i check my save game.

The top floor dopplegangers spawned like they would in an unmodded game. The script has 3 blocks for spawning them, not sure how that would work, haven't done any programming in a long time and I was never particularly good at it anyway.

I tried messing around setting variables via the console but the only change i managed was to get the bodies to appear in the table container, they weren't there the first time.

I linked to your bug report in the JAP thread at Kerzenburg, so it won't be lost.

The only thing I see when looking at the script briefly is that the prefix "dw#" which is I think DavidW(?) and therefore maybe SCS? is also adding a spawn block for higher difficulty. Maybe this is a compatibility thing.

AR7229.bcs doesn't exist in BGT (the area doesn't have a script in unmodded BGT).

So yes, some of your problems arise because some other mod also added content here.

Can you do a changelog on AR7229.bcs so we know which other mod adds doppelganger spawns there? EDIT: It seems to me there is another mod who restored this.

So this doesn't explain why you have two Aldeths. So maybe them is still a bug in JAP, but the doppelgangers on the top floor spawn is borked because SCS adds a spawn system, too.
