[Beta 12] Protection from Normal Missiles doesn't protect against Arrow of Fire in BG2EE

Based on the spell description, it is supposed to protect against Arrow of Fire in BG2EE, because these arrows do not have a +2 modifier to their attack type, even though they have to their damage. But it doesn't seem to be doing this.

The catch is that PFNM works by blocking specific projectiles. And the ARROWFLM projectile used by arrows of fire is also used by the likes of the Flame Arrow spell, Phoenix Guard explosive arrows, the "God Bow", and fallen solar arrows - those shouldn't be blocked. In order to block the newly +0 fire arrows without unwanted side effects, you would have to clone the projectile; use one for fire arrows and variants such as kobold commando arrows, use the other for the more magical flaming arrows. And then have PFNM block the version of the flaming arrow projectile used for basic fire arrows - probably the new one, since mods might add more magical fire arrows.

So it's doable, but a significant complication for the sake of one spell.

There is a simple solution to this complexity, drop the immunity to projectiles and make PFNM a better Shield spell in most respects.

All that's needed is (on install time) alter the missile types in game (with a threshold of +2 or lesser, or whatever version the user chooses to install) so that the highly magical missiles inflict piercing damage, while the worse missile damage type is reserved either for non-magical missiles or those below a certain enchantment level (notice that the Gesen Bow was already sort of like this). The PFNM spell would then grant 100% missile damage resistance and a substantial AC bonus (against spell interruption, Stoneskin stripping) of about 7 to 9 points against missile weapons, balanced and simple and free of bugs really.

That sounds like a terrible idea, and far more complicated than simply splitting one projectile into two versions. Plus it has tons of side effects. "Sword" and Shield style no longer protects against magical ranged attacks. You can buy some magic arrows and shoot down missile immune monsters such as battle horrors or otyughs from a safe distance instead of having to engage them in melee. Slings ... do magic bullets deal piercing or crushing damage in this system?

You use the Gesen bow's auto-attack piercing damage as support for your proposed radical overhaul. I see it as a mistake that was never important enough to fix, and over time became just one of those things.

No one takes proficiencies in unmodded S&S style anyway, unless there is literally nothing else for the character to spend their proficiency for the level on, it's already objectively weak. However enemies are more likely than players to be using non magical or low enchantment arrows (which would be protected against by the style).

Yeah, otyughs often have people reloading for hours in the normal game, it would be wrong to weaken the otyugh, one of the most memorable miniboss types of the series.

Battle horrors are obviously nasty, but rarely alone, and usually met in enclosed spaces, kiting is still possible with a wand of magic missiles or similar anyway if you can keep distance, or simply hit and run with a low speed factor two-handed weapon like a staff, although many people, myself included, consider that exploitative (depending on your version they shouldn't have immunity to the Slow spell).
