Sorrow
Point is, help was thwarted by hooligans and poor leadership. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I hope that that will teach governments that no mercy shall be given to subhuman criminals who attack innocent people. Link to comment
Tameon the Dragoon
I'm safe! I'm safe, I'm safe, I'm safe. I am so relieved to be in some sort of normal city. I'm staying with my uncle in California. My house is completely gutted, and my neighborhood is covered in mold and disease. My entire town, aside from that- everything I ever knew for the past seventeen years- is all gone. This is proof, to me, that God trumps all. I am tired of all this whinning, though. All I hear on the news is whinning about racism. That's bullshit. People should quit complaining and get to work on rebuilding. And hopefully the casinos will be moved. All those casinos we had in Gulfport was just stupid. They were asking for it. Link to comment

Jolyth
Hey Tame. I hear you on the mold issue. I am currently trying to get on with a company that tests for and treats/removes mold. They are going to really need the evironmental help at this point. No one really knows when we can go back. They are still messing around with evacuations and the levee breech. As far as racism. *sigh* People are angry and want to blame someone, so they all back on what has always worked in the past. It's not going to cut it this time. Link to comment
Guest Guest_Littiz_*
Any news? Sorry, I hardly watch TV or anything, so I have no idea. Hope the situation is improving somewhat. About racism, hey. It's the States. They might have a lot of problems, but I think the word "racism" in the States can be used only for rethoric, by now. As I understood, there might have been a poverty issue here, if anything. Link to comment
Western Paladin
George Bush appointed a Coast Guard admiral (I forget his name) to be the leader of the seaborne relief efforts. It looks like it's proceeding a little better now. The other hurricane in the Atlantic looks now like it won't land in the Gulf which is good news for New Orleans. Link to comment
Kulyok
It's Hurricane Rita now, and from what I've seen in the news, it could be even worse. Good luck to you, folks. Wherever you are. Link to comment
Andyr
It does seem evacuation is proceeding at a more rapid pace this time, which is reassuring. Link to comment
jester
Well even for someone with a very short attention span, people in charge just could not have forgotten what went wrong last time by now. Our news report that the worst might still be averted if Rita decides to turn in another direction. :/ Link to comment
BevH
Unfortunately, the news doesn't look all that great. New Orleans is already experiencing flooding. And now the hurricane has taken a right turn somewhat... it's predicted to make landfall more to the west of where Katrina hit, but still not good... Yes evacuations are proceeding apace. My brother-in-law's family left a couple of days ago. Link to comment

New Orleans will still get plastered by the edge of Rita, though. The mayor of NO says that I thinks the levees will hold but the city may still be flooded again. Link to comment

They expect it to be as bad as it was before, according to the news report I just saw. My aunt barely got out of Beaumont, Texas. She was planning to fly to Washington., D.C. a couple nights ago anyway, but they cancelled all flights out while she was at the airport. I don't know why they cancel flights so early in this kind of situation. She ended up driving to D.C., had to talk her way past a State Trooper roadblock, but she got out. Link to comment
Jolyth
In spite of the fact that the Army Corp is the biggest bunch of fools this side of the planet and previously flooded/pumped dry areas are now reflooded, all is not lost. I have food, AC, and internet. Who could ask for more? Remember too, Rita lacks the intensity of Katrina. Katrina struck as a high 4/low 5 with a pressure of 903mb. Rita is barely a 3 and her pressure spiked rapidly today from 897 to 930mb. While Rita is by no means a kitten, she is currently trying to tear off what remains of my roof, she does lack Katrina's slap to the face, knife in the back, punch to the gut and kick to the groin that Katrina had. Just because it downgraded doesn't mean all those waves will just go away. That was the case with Katrina, at least. My prayers are with the people still in Louisiana. The east side of the hurricane is always the worst, and it's going to be right on top of the western side of Louisiana. Link to comment
Jolyth
And we still have a sense of humor after the 1-2 sucker punch! YOU KNOW YOU LIVE ON THE GULF COAST WHEN... You have FEMA's number on your speed dialer. You have more than 300 C and D batteries in your kitchen drawer. Your pantry contains more than 20 cans of Spaghetti O's. You are thinking of repainting your house to match the plywood covering your windows. When describing your house to a prospective buyer, you say it has three bedrooms, two baths and one safe hallway. Your social security number isn't a secret, it's written in Sharpie on your arm. You are on a first-name basis with the cashier at Home Depot. You are delighted to pay $3 for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline. The road leading to your house has been declared a No-Wake Zone. You decide that your patio furniture looks better on the bottom of the pool. You own more than three large coolers. You wish that other people get hit by a hurricane and not feel the least bit guilty about it. You rationalize helping a friend board up by thinking "It'll only take gallon of gas to get there and back." You have 2-liter coke bottles and milk jugs filled with water in your freezer. Three months ago you couldn't hang a shower curtain; today you can assemble a portable generator by candlelight. You catch a 13-pound redfish. In your driveway. You can recite from memory whole portions of your homeowner's insurance policy. You consider a "vacation" to stunning Tupelo, Mississippi. At cocktail parties, women are attracted to the guy with the biggest chainsaw. You have had tuna fish more than 5 days in a row. There is a roll of tar-paper in your garage. You can rattle off the names of three or more meteorologists who work at the Weather Channel. Someone comes to your door to tell you they found your roof. Ice is a valid topic of conversation. Your "drive-thru" meal consists of MRE's and bottled water. Relocating to South Dakota does not seem like such a crazy idea. You spend more time on your roof then in your living room. You've been laughed at over the phone by a roofer, fence builder or a tree worker. A battery powered TV is considered a home entertainment center. You don't worry about relatives wanting to visit during the summer. Your child's first words, "hunker down" and you didn't go to UGA! Having a tree in your living room does not necessarily mean it's Christmas. Bathroom tissue is elevated to coin of the realm at the shelters. You know the difference between the "good side" of a storm and the "bad side." Your kids start school in August and finish in July. Your kids attend night school and they are only in Pre-K You go to work early and stay late just to enjoy the air conditioning. WELCOME TO THE GULF COAST YA'LL! Link to comment
