Help the Newbie

Hello. I'm the annoying guy who's modding for the first time. I was hoping to use this thread to ask annoying questions and people who know better could answr if they have the time. So thank-you in advance. First question: What would be the best downloadable free program (I have no money) to use for editing BG portraits? Is there a favourite for portrait creators? I know Portrait Portal use photoshop, but I don't own that. Anything else? Thanks

GIMP is an open source linux clone of photoshop that my wife actually likes better for most uses. You'll need to download GIMP for Windows and whatever version of GTK the page I linked you to says works with your system. GIMP actually has more features than photoshop elements even though it's only a 7 megabyte download.

If you find you don't like GIMP (personally I can't stand the interface), here are some other possibilities:

Ultimate Paint

 

All have both freeware/shareware and commercial versions, but there aren't any time/save limits on the free versions - just fewer features.

 

I use Paint Shop Pro myself, but the shareware version has a time limit (60 days IIRC). I've also stuck with v7.03, since later versions run at around half the speed, have completely re-arranged the menu's, and added/changed various other things that all contribute to the ruination of a great program.

There are a lot of custom interface options you can also download for gimp. The interface my wife and I use is a custom one. We aren't too fond of the standard interface either.

Just wanna know what people would think of this kit idea. The Thug. I like to keep rogues in my party only so they can open things and disarm traps, otherwise I find them a liability, to be protected like a mage. I'm not much into backstabbing - oppurtunties are few and far between, there are way more frontal assaults. So I thought about the Thug, who is basically a barbarian/thief, a tanky fighter type with the theif abilities that count. He has the special ability 'Drunken Rage' which gives him some combat bonuses, but also intoxicates him. He can put three proficiency flots in all 'heavy hitting weapons' (Hammers, Flails, Maces, Axes, Morningstars and Clubs). He has limited thief abilities, but just enought to open locks and disarm traps. The class would only be available to humans, half-orcs and dwarfs (the 'Disgruntled Three'). I don't really know much about modding, and I've read up on the restrictions, so my ideas aren't AS ludicrous as they were, lol, but I still need opinions. Any comments?

The idea of tha thuggish type thief, who is more of a bruiser than a pick pocket is just fine, and very good from a roleplaying perspective. I quite like the idea that the thug should use "heavy hitters" as weapons, as befits their personality.

 

However, I think that such a theif isn't likely to be the specialist lock-picker/trap-disarmer you're looking for (if you're a large drunken lout with an axe, it is more likely that you're going to want to smash in the chest rather than pick the lock on it). To me, the connection just isn't there. Also, while the idea of giving a thug more skill with weapons than a traditional thief is fine (subject to adding restrictions to balance it) I think three stars is excessive. Consider that Rangers and Paladins are restricted to only two stars, and they are warrior classes.

Hm, this is true. Well regardless, I dunno WHAT I'm doing. I wonder if you could help me out. Wiedu won't install my kit, as pr the G3 tutorial. This is my tp2 file. It says there is an error at line 19, column 2-4. I can't tell what is wrong.

Do you have socko.2da in your mod folder? If it aint there, your mod won't install.

Do me a favor. Take a text editor and find line 19, column 2-4 for me. Just post that part. I'm not seeing anything that would necessarily kill your install off hand, (then again, I'm not a very good modder ) and just seeing the part WEIDU is spitting out will help me a lot.

Um, well, during the process of doing just that... I fixed it... I have no idea how. Hm. Perhaps I was a modder in a past life? Thanks anyway.

Ok, new problem. I've made a special ability called 'Drunken Rage'. How do I equip this to the kit, and how do I add it so that he gains one every maybe 6 levels?
