How do you play Baldur's Gate?

1 How many NPCs do you usually include (for solo, 0)?

depending on how im feeling i usually go with a party comprised of 4 - 6 characters made by me, and a few NPCs to fill in the blanks of the 4 or 5 made character parties, mostly the romancable NPCs

2 Do you prefer a themed party (all good, all evil, all mages, all wizard slayers, etc.) or do you prefer a balanced party in terms of class and alignment?

I never really go with a themed party, i usually go with whoever i feel like, i try to mix it up a bit. some good some bad, some neutral, some male, some female the only real theme i have is the way i set up my party each time i play

1. whatever i feel but usually a fighter/cleric

2. Paladin

3. tank

4. Priest class or bioware romanceable NPC

6. thief

6. Mage or whatever i feel is missing if i have aerie in the party

3 Does NPC personality influence your party composition?

A little, i usually go with NPCs i like, unless i am trying somebody out for the first time

4 Does an NPC quest influence you party composition?

No i usually decide who i want regardless of there quests, if they have them at all

5 Does NPC power influence your party composition?

Not really i go with NPCs i like regardless of there power, i dont powergame or whatever it is

6 Regarding your PC (player 1), do you single-class, dual-, or multi-?

I Multi class quite often, it often frees up a characters space for a specialist class, but i do go single class too, i have yet to dual class

7 How powerful do you want your PC to be in terms of the challenges posed by the game?

I like a good challenge, but i challenge i can win, i dislike improved irenicus, partially becasue im usually to weak for him, and i dont play as much as i should so much skills and micro managing characters or whatever isnt that great.

8 How powerful do you want your PC to be compared to the NPCs?

Pretty strong, the PC is the child of a god, but he is only half god so it sound be kinda realistic

9 How do you utilize multi-classed characters?

my mages are often multiclassed so they can wear elven chainmail and still cast spells, but having to wait a nit long to cast powerful spells is a downer, i often use the cleric/ranger, good tank, priest spells and ranger skills. my pc is usually a fighter/cleric, fighter so i get the fighter stronghold, plus priest spells, i hate having my one priest die and i dont want to reload and im miles from a healer, so having another priest is good.

10 How do you use 'specialty-class' characters (bards, monks, specialty kits)?

I always kit when i can, not sure if this is a bad thing, some classes disadvantages arent so disadvataging in the whole scheme of things, paladins kits come to mind, and the berserker fighter kit and the swashbuckler thief kit.

1 How many NPCs do you usually include (for solo, 0)?

I pick four and stick with them throughout the entire game (swapping Yoshimo for Imoen, usually). Then, with the fifth NPC slot, I usually switch people out as I do their quests (Nalia, Valygar, Keldorn). Either that or I just pick five NPCs and stick with them through the game.

If NPCs have SoA content only, I'll bring one and then switch them for Sarevok when I get to ToB.

2 Do you prefer a themed party (all good, all evil, all mages, all wizard slayers, etc.) or do you prefer a balanced party in terms of class and alignment?

It really depends on the PC... I try and pick NPCs based on who the PC would want to take along.

Example: Elven ranger named Kitana (where I got my username from) has a party of all elves, and Imoen. Imoen's a childhood friend of hers and she wouldn't leave a friend behind, so Imoen's the only non-elf in the party.

Once in a while I create a PC specifically for a certain type of party (ex. All multi-classed, or all using ranged weapons whenever possible).

I rarely take evil NPCs. The exceptions to this rule are Edwin, Sarevok, and to some extent Viconia. I have never had Korgan in my party and likely never will. I have never played with an evil PC.

3 Does NPC personality influence your party composition?

Yes, I'm more likely to bring along NPCs I like, such as Jaheira and Imoen. That doesn't mean I won't hesitate to leave Jaheira behind if I don't have space for her... It's just a preference.

I play a -lot- of NPC mods and usually base the party around:

1. Who the PC's romancing.

2. Who the PC knew in BG1. (If PC never met Minsc, she'd leave him outside Irenicus-land.)

3. Who seems like they'd have interesting dialog with the one or two mod NPCs I'm using.

4 Does an NPC quest influence you party composition?

Not really. I refuse to do Valygar's quest without Valygar and Nalia's quest without Nalia. Other than that, no, it doesn't.

5 Does NPC power influence your party composition?

No.

However, I -do- need to always have a thief in the party who can unlock locks and detect traps - I usually just use Imoen. Other than that, anything goes. I'd rather have NPCs with stats that suit their personality.

6 Regarding your PC (player 1), do you single-class, dual-, or multi-?

It varies. I rarely dual-class. Then again, I rarely play humans.

7 How powerful do you want your PC to be in terms of the challenges posed by the game?

Powerful enough to stay alive, or at least be able to mirror image/stoneskin/whatever and run away when being it. If I can kill things while I'm at it, that's always a plus.

8 How powerful do you want your PC to be compared to the NPCs?

It really depends on the PC. I think I have a bad habit of making mage-type characters with less than 10 con... But as long as they don't get hit, everything's fine.

I don't care if it's NPCs or my PC that's beating things up as long as my party wins in the end.

9 How do you utilize multi-classed characters?

Depends. Probably not as well as I could.

Jaheira is a tank who can conveniently cast healing spells, and is usually my party's main fighter. (I play magic-heavy parties most of the time.)

Imoen and Jan are thieves who are also conveniently mages.

Nalia is a mage who can use a bow.

Anomen is a cleric who can also hit things.

Aerie is a mage who can also heal.

10 How do you use 'specialty-class' characters (bards, monks, specialty kits)?

I've never played a monk. Monks and barbarians are the only classes I've never tried.

Kits are fun. Bards are fun. Wild mages are very, very fun.

This forum looks great on a 21" wide-screen LCD. (Had to say that, still getting used to all the real-estate.)

On to the questions...

1 How many NPCs do you usually include (for solo, 0)?

Full party, more for the interaction than the necessity. I've been meaning to try a small party, and even solo someday, but haven't gotten around to it yet. (I haven't played through BG2 in nearly two years, due to other things taking my time.)

2 Do you prefer a themed party (all good, all evil, all mages, all wizard slayers, etc.) or do you prefer a balanced party in terms of class and alignment?

I generally play good-aligned parties and therefore choose appropriate NPCs. With the ability to choose which proficiencies, items, and spells to use, a person can play the same NPCs and have different experiences each time. Of course, there are enough different good/neutral-aligned NPCs, even in the unmodified game, that I can have different teams each time I play.

As far as other themes, I've gone anti-undead before, using an Undead Hunter and a party full of priests. Lawful Good Anomen above level 30 is a sight to behold when turning a room full of undead.

3 Does NPC personality influence your party composition?

Yes. I can handle whining as long as it's temporary, so Aerie doesn't bother me that much. Jaheira embodies several qualities I look for in friends (loyalty, conviction, etc.), so she's often in my group. Minsc is an all-around fun guy so I bring him along for laughs. Keldorn is a good man, though a bit narrow-minded. Anomen doesn't annoy me as much as others, and he becomes a better person if he passes his test. All in all I try to keep an upbeat party; depression is a daily struggle so it's important to be around positive influences, even if they happen to be in the form of rendered sprites.

4 Does an NPC quest influence your party composition?

Sometimes. For instance, my decision to take Jaheira often depends on whether I want to deal with her abundance of harper-related situations. For other characters with fewer situations, it's less of a concern. I few the quests as an extension of the NPC's personality, so I take them along for the whole experience.

5 Does NPC power influence your party composition?

Only to a point. If my party is balanced, I'll bring along "weaker" characters, or I'll try a build that is less powerful but possibly more interesting. Some evil characters are supposed to be more powerful, but I won't bring them into the party because of their alignment and the fact that I don't care for their personalities.

6 Regarding your PC (player 1), do you single-class, dual-, or multi-?

Usually single, but I will multi-class in smaller parties or just to have an extra ability. For example, a fighter/thief is nice because you can run point, disabling traps. If attacked, he'll survive easily until the rest of the party can provide support. Someday I'll dual-class, but I have to think up a character and background to fit the reason.

7 How powerful do you want your PC to be in terms of the challenges posed by the game?

He's got the majority of divine essence flowing in his veins compared to the other Children, especially after the events of SoA, so I expect very little to be a challenge for him. Game balance means little for such a character, who is constantly pushing the limits of the mortal realm.

8 How powerful do you want your PC to be compared to the NPCs?

Much more powerful. Alas, the other Children get to be powerful dragons and nigh-immune fire giants, but my guy looks like and fights like everyone else in the party. All he's got that's different are two extra buttons on his special abilities bar, one of which he can't use because he's good-aligned. Yawn. There's room for improvement in this area. Even if I don't need the party to win the battles, I'll still bring them along for the company.

9 How do you utilize multi-classed characters?

Usually as a means to support a smaller party, or to solo. With a full party it can be hard getting to those powerful high levels, without replaying over and over, so I tend to keep multiclassing to a minimum in that case.

10 How do you use 'specialty-class' characters (bards, monks, specialty kits)?

I've yet to bring one along, to be honest, although I have made use of all paladin kits. Problem is I tend to play one type of character so I haven't branched out much. I meant to, but as I said earlier, I haven't played much in two years. It'd be fun to have a bard and to try a monk at some point, just for the different experience. I did try all those classes in NWN, but that's a different game.

My list probably isn't much help to you. I have experienced nearly every quest in the game, and I've tried every romance just to see how it was written, but when it comes to characters, I usually play fighter-types and bring along supporting characters. It's a BG habit I should change.

1 How many NPCs do you usually include (for solo, 0)?

Five. I enjoy banters and I like the strategy involved in controling each party member. I also enjoy trying out custom NPCs.

2 Do you prefer a themed party (all good, all evil, all mages, all wizard slayers, etc.) or do you prefer a balanced party in terms of class and alignment?

I'm definitely driven by a combination of PC character concept and party theme. Often I find the game isn't quite challenging enough for my taste with a standard party (I prefer a full party to soloing).

I like taking the 'road less traveled' with respect to characters that many don't use. And I get a kick out of putting together offbeat combinations of NPCs to see what their banters are like. I always play with the Happy Patch now in order to have mixed alignment parties without concern for party reputation.

I don't completely ignore the party's array of abilities, though. I can get through the game with only a lone 'tank' but I do want at least one. And I always want at least one mage since I enjoy spellcasting. Since the game tends to become a drag for me if the party lacks a thief who can detect traps and pick locks, at least one healer, and a person who can identify items, those abilities are all must-haves in my book. These days most often I include a bard in the party for item identification purposes.

3 Does NPC personality influence your party composition?

Very much so. Although at times in order to assure that the party has a healer, thief, and item identifier a NPC with one of those skills trumps another character whose personality might be more interesting to me in the party overall.

4 Does an NPC quest influence you party composition?

Seldom. I want to say never, but at times it may have in the past... I can't remember any specific examples though.

That said, I've only used two custom NPCs so far (Keto and Finch). There could certainly be custom NPC quests that might influence the party composition.

5 Does NPC power influence your party composition?

Usually in reverse. At this stage, more often than not I assemble 'weak' party compositions in order to increase the challenge.

6 Regarding your PC (player 1), do you single-class, dual-, or multi-?

What I find most satisfying here varies according to the classes in question. For example, for a Fighter-Thief I like to dual class. For a Cleric-Mage or Cleric-Thief I prefer a multiclass.

7 How powerful do you want your PC to be in terms of the challenges posed by the game?

I do like for the PC to be substantially powerful. He or she doesn't have to have the highest number of kills by the game's end. But the character should at least contribute in vital ways.

8 How powerful do you want your PC to be compared to the NPCs?

Pretty much the same answer as number 7, really.

9 How do you utilize multi-classed characters?

It depends on the party composition. For example, in my current game Tiax's thieving skills are going unused because I have Tiax suited up in ankheg armor as a meleer. In that particular party he's the most capable character to help Minsc out on the frontline. Armored up he can still cast his cleric spells, of course, and in practice he's functioning more as a battle cleric. Whereas if I had at least one more tank other than Minsc I would probably use Tiax as a backstabber.

10 How do you use 'specialty-class' characters (bards, monks, specialty kits)?

I've come to appreciate the challenge of using a bard well, and usually try to include one in the line-up. I don't like having to take time out of the game to rest multiple times in order to have a mage identify a large number of items via the Identification spell. And although I always end the game rolling in cash, I like to keep as much on hand as possible for whatever I may want to buy for the party at any given point. So I prefer not to spend money on item identification.

Otherwise I don't have much experience with specialty classes. About 5 years ago I played BG/ToSC extensively, but for some reason never got into BG2. I've only been playing BG2 and Tutu over the last year. It takes me almost 3 months to complete the entire saga (or typically around 6 weeks to play just SoA/ToB). So I haven't notched many games yet. I've dabbled in the past with a monk in BG2, a Priest of Helm in BG1Tutu, and so forth, but it was just in order to sample them. I haven't used many kits yet, and I do look forward to checking them out.

1 How many NPCs do you usually include (for solo, 0)?

I like to keep my party full. I can stay alive better that way, plus I like all the dialogs and chitchat that go on in the party. Korgan and Mazzy have some FUNNY things to say to each other! :D

2 Do you prefer a themed party (all good, all evil, all mages, all wizard slayers, etc.) or do you prefer a balanced party in terms of class and alignment?

I tend to go with who ever will suit my PC at that time. Here is what I usually like to have in my party regardless of alignment.

1. A good healer

2. Tank

3. good mage

4. someone who can use a bow

5. thief

6. and a druid or paladin

also at least one of the people in my party is romaceable. I love it when the men fight over me.

3 Does NPC personality influence your party composition?

Oh yes! I mix it up sometimes like having Keldorn and Viconia or Mazzy and Korgan together just to get the interesting dialoges. But also I will avoid doing the circus quest so I never have to hear that little wingless whinning brat!

4 Does an NPC quest influence you party composition?

A little. I tend to want to have the NPC with me on their quest. Exceptions usually are Nalia's home and the Cerne's Druid's Grove.

5 Does NPC power influence your party composition?

Not overly concerned with that really. Just try to make a good balanced party.

6 Regarding your PC (player 1), do you single-class, dual-, or multi-?

I always stay single. Always. I just like being able to hone my PC's ablities into one thing so they become great at that.

7 How powerful do you want your PC to be in terms of the challenges posed by the game?

Depends on how I make my PC and how I run that particular game.

8 How powerful do you want your PC to be compared to the NPCs?

A bit strong than them. I mean she is half-god! She should be stronger than them!

9 How do you utilize multi-classed characters?

I tend to prefer pure classes. The only multi's I take along my romance people or people I take along because they suit my char. personality wise or just because they have been friends for awhile (like Jaheria)

10 How do you use 'specialty-class' characters (bards, monks, specialty kits)?

I love love love love playing as a monk! Bard is okay...interesting playing one that is for sure. But just love playing a monk, I mean you can hit hard and fast and you never need to pay money for better weapons or armor so you can spend more on the rest of your party. :hm:

1 How many NPCs do you usually include (for solo, 0)?

Usually a full set, even though that causes a few more catastrophes and reloads. The bantering and silliness more than makes up for it. I tend to plan who I want in the party before I even start the game, and then run around for a while getting hold of everybody. Then I settle into playing the game proper.

2 Do you prefer a themed party (all good, all evil, all mages, all wizard slayers, etc.) or do you prefer a balanced party in terms of class and alignment?

I need a beefy fighter-type, and someone who can heal the beforementioned person. All else is pretty much negotiable. Though NPCs that would rub the PC the wrong way aren't picked up, at least not permanently.

3 Does NPC personality influence your party composition?

As said above, I try to roleplay, so if the NPC and the PC aren't compatible personality-wise, they aren't taken along.

4 Does an NPC quest influence you party composition?

No.

5 Does NPC power influence your party composition?

No.

6 Regarding your PC (player 1), do you single-class, dual-, or multi-?

Usually a human single-class. It fits the story best.

7 How powerful do you want your PC to be in terms of the challenges posed by the game?

Barely hanging on is usually most memorable. But there should be more than one working strategy for every fight. Having thief quests barred from me because I'm not a thief is not at all a concern.

8 How powerful do you want your PC to be compared to the NPCs?

On par. So that he actually needs the help in order to succeed.

9 How do you utilize multi-classed characters?

I try to use, and combine if possible, abilities from both classes.

10 How do you use 'specialty-class' characters (bards, monks, specialty kits)?

My PC always has a kit of some sort, just so that he stands out a bit more from the crowd and has some more neat tricks up his sleeve.

Interesting thread!

I'm basically just a lurker, but... here.

1 How many NPCs do you usually include (for solo, 0)?

5. If I need a character for a theme (as below), I'll write one up quick- give them a join and leave dialog, around two PC banters, a few standard injections, and shove them in Irenicus's dungeon so I don't have to bring the character in with the PC. (I'm weird like that. Currently, there's an elven thief, an evil half-orc cleric/thief, an evil monk, a dwarven figher/cleric and some sort of gnome hanging around the main room of Irencius's dungeon waiting for someone to come rescue them. I should probably uninstall them.)

2 Do you prefer a themed party (all good, all evil, all mages, all wizard slayers, etc.) or do you prefer a balanced party in terms of class and alignment?

Yes. I've done all elves, all shorties, all evils, all goods, all neutrals, all chaotics, all mages, all anti-magics, all naturey types (druids and rangers), all mods, all couples, and all thieves.

3 Does NPC personality influence your party composition?

Nah. I'll put up with characters I'm not that fond of (Hi, Imoen! Hi, Minsc!) if I can't imagine the character I'm playing leaving them behind.

4 Does an NPC quest influence you party composition?

Not really, although I really like Valygar and have trouble killing him for his blood to get in to the sphere when I'm not taking him along. So I usually take him along, if only for that. =/

5 Does NPC power influence your party composition?

Nope. BGII's pretty easy as it is.

6 Regarding your PC (player 1), do you single-class, dual-, or multi-?

I like bards... but if not that, I tend to dual or multi.

7 How powerful do you want your PC to be in terms of the challenges posed by the game?

Depends on my mood. Sometimes, I put tactics in and struggle over every little encounter- othertimes, I have the cheats on and CTRL-R whenever a character gets hit. On average, though, I want the PC to have trouble with bosses/dragons/liches and whatever, but find most everything else easy.

8 How powerful do you want your PC to be compared to the NPCs?

Depends. If said NPC is a fiend from Baator who's been alive for some trillion years, I won't argue with her 20 charisma/20 strength build, just raise my eyebrow. If the NPC is some eighteen year old human girl with 18 charisma, 14 intelligence, 16 wisdom and 16 dexterity (and a sickly 8 con, to boot), I'm going to run screaming, though. :hm: In the end, though, I don't mind too much if the NPC is more powerful- I do mind if the NPC's story becomes more important then the PC's.

9 How do you utilize multi-classed characters?

Badly? The way I would a single class character, I guess. Jaheria can act as a standard fighter or a standard druid, just as Aerie can act as a standard mage or a standard cleric. Depending on the circumstance, they act as whatever single class is more useful to me at the moment, and switch to the other when I need them to do something else.;;

10 How do you use 'specialty-class' characters (bards, monks, specialty kits)?

The way I would in PNP? Um. Bards can act as support mage, support meleer (depending on their kit), or just someone hanging back with bard song and a crossbow. Monks are very fragile fighters- I use them how I would a rogue, by trying to get the monster's attention on someone else and let the monk handle a beat down. Speciality kits are usually the same as the core class, with a few exceptions.

1: 5, with one slot usually rotating for a while to do NPC quests. Mods in general, and NPC depth in particular, are the things that keep me playing the BG series instead of going back to play Fallout and PST.

2: Balanced in terms of class; usually 3 fighter-y types (of which one might be a ranger and another a paladin) 1 mage / sorcerer, 1 cleric, and 1 thief - if I have say a multiclass thief/mage the extra slot would go to a monk, bard or druid (unless CHARNAME is one of those classes)

Party alignment depends on CHARNAME's personality - if goody-two-shoes, the party will typically be good with maybe one or two neutrals (unless trying to redeem Viconia etc.). If a chaotic neutral opportunist bastard, I go for a wacky mixed alignment party with lots of conflicts. I have yet to play a truly "evil" protagonist - the most rewarding path is far too often the "good" path.

3: Most certainly, though even the most annoying character might earn a place if party balance and RP so dictates. (IE if not playing a PC cleric, Anomen might be the best choice for that role - distasteful though it may be)

4: To a certain extent. If nothing else, I always take Valygar along to do the Planar Sphere in SoA.

5: Not much. If the overall power of the party is well-balanced and sufficient, that's more important than the power of a single NPC.

6: Varies from game to game. In my first few games years ago I only played single-classes, in my current game I'm playing a Berserker to be dualed to Cleric in Chateau Irenicus, while my best (IE most entertaining ) game yet was with a half-elven Ranger-Cleric. When you're playing from Candlekeep to the Throne of Bhaal, I feel there's little point in sticking with a single class (unless that class is a magic-user) - beyond level 20 there's just so little to be gained. Also there's considerable roleplaying potential involved - his/her traumatic experiences changes CHARNAME profoundly enough to warrant a change of class, outlook etc. etc.

7: Sufficient at the very least. Me no like constant reloading.

8: Unlike the NPCs CHARNAME is a demigod, so he/she should be (at least somewhat) more powerful than them.

9: I like multiclasses, especially in BGII where there are "more levels to go around". Having one or two flexible characters means one or two party slots can be allocated elsewhere. I especially love the Ranger-Cleric, Mage-Thief and Fighter-Mage.

10: I don't much care for bards... A little of this, a little of that but not particularly good at anything. The Song & Silence mod makes some very interesting changes to bard kits, and I might try playing one of those as a PC. Monks are a great class, though in my experience they require a considerable amount of babysitting to make it through BGI in one piece - but arguably that just made things more interesting.

1 How many NPCs do you usually include (for solo, 0)?

I don't like solo playing - no banters etc. But PC and one NPC is very interesting thing. You have got fast level-ups, and romance (If it is romanceable NPC). Or full party :hm:

2 Do you prefer a themed party (all good, all evil, all mages, all wizard slayers, etc.) or do you prefer a balanced party in terms of class and alignment?

I like only bad team from themed parties. But also I like strategames :D

3 Does NPC personality influence your party composition?

Yes! Yes! Yes! No Valygar, Anomen, Mazzy or Cernd - they're without colors and interesting personalities.

4 Does an NPC quest influence you party composition?

I only don't like Jansen quest! Stupid fed-ex with a lot of walking...

5 Does NPC power influence your party composition?

When I'm making powergaming session - yes. If more hm.. 'climatic' then I'm selecting party by personalities.

6 Regarding your PC (player 1), do you single-class, dual-, or multi-?

Only single-class!

7 How powerful do you want your PC to be in terms of the challenges posed by the game?

I don't need much powerfull character - anybody can be slayer ;) My first all-game PC - gnomish cleric with 13 wisdom and 17 intelligence was so weak... ;)

8 How powerful do you want your PC to be compared to the NPCs?

Look higher.

9 How do you utilize multi-classed characters?

Just drop them from party?

10 How do you use 'specialty-class' characters (bards, monks, specialty kits)?

Of course! At first - I love bards. They're very role-play, and also good for powergamers. Especially with kits. Invisible Jester, Blade etc. I don't like monks :D I don't know why...

Berelinde, don't worry about it. The "community" is very fractured so you either have to pick a place or spam it to multiple forums. Since you posted it here at a forum I visit, I was able to respond. I've never heard of the other forum that was mentioned. (Go figure.)

You didn't ask about using add-on NPCs but I'll submit a potential (multi-)question.

11. Do you play with add-on NPCs, and if so, how many at a time, and why?

Yes, presently only two add-on NPCs are installed but there are a few more I've been meaning to check out. I used to play one add-on NPC at a time because prior to the crossmod project they usually ignored each other, and part of the fun is watching the party members interact. Once I've settled on an NPC and feel it meshes into the game properly, and is stable (code-wise) and well-written, I then view that NPC as a permanent part of the game, so he/she gets treated the same as the original NPCs when it comes to points 1 through 10 above. I only select NPCs that fit the alignment I prefer to play, and I don't bring along characters I wouldn't associate with personally. This helps to ensure a positive game experience.

Blast, forgot to answer my own Why question. I bring along new NPCs to freshen the game. Some are very enjoyable and really add flavor to the existing crew. And they increase my options so I can at most times always get just the party I feel like playing at a particular time.

Hey, thanks!

I don't know why it didn't occur to me to post on more general forums. Probably because I got into forums because I was interested in mods, so I gravitated toward more mod-related sites.

NP, you might want to try posting your survey at these locations as well:

I might, but I'm having some difficulty registering at SP. My email is a bit dodgy these days. Don't know why. I guess I should call tech support, since I receive *some* messages and can send just fine. I just receive about 1 email in 10, and that's really annoying.

Anyway, thanks to the post on PlanetBG and here, I'm probably about on target with my research.

I do like the question added by Smoketest, though. I wish I'd thought of it.
