Journal Glitches

When I talk to Elminster upon entering baldur's gate his dialogue ends but he still stays there. I can talk to him again and he will give the same journal entry giving me a double journal entry. Also when I talk to the female commoner to the left of him, random journal entries appear. They seem to be descriptions of rings and shields. A sample jounal entry:

This is Ajantis' Family shield

(description of shield)

-------------------------------------

Ilvassar's ring

(description of ring)

-------------------------------------

Any ideas on what the problem could be?

I have been using shadowkeeper to tweak some things like weapon proficiencies since I wasn't satisfied with my char's proficiency. Nothing else other than that. The game and quests seem to go fine. This is the only glitch so far. I think this might be a BG1 NPC bug error because as I continue talking to the commoner the following appears in the text:

BG1 required components have not been installed

I am clueless as to what this means because I have installed all required components.

Thanks,

Manwe

What it means is that your strings are scrambled.

The BG1 line is just another string, and that may not have been the problem.

Did you recently uninstall or uninstall and reinstall anything, or did you try using a saved game from another installation?

BTW: you are not going to be able to use the string fixer to solve this.

Hmm, no I've kept the same installation of BGT 1.02 and a couple of compatible mods including this one. I'll post my WeiDu log. Thanks for identifying the problem though. It seems to only affect non-game essential dialogues. This one scramble only affects female commoners and Elminster. Hopefully it won't mess my game up completely.

Hm, could be many things.

I've had problems with the core component of bg2fixpack and the BG1 NPC Project: Player-Initiated Dialogues myself. Unfortunately for you, the only thing you can do to correct the string errors is to install everything again, if you cannot live with things the way they are. It's likely that there will be other string errors as well.

This link has the recommended installation procedure: Spellholdstudios.com

I'm getting to Baldur's Gate in my own game later today, so I'll check and see if i get the same errors.

Hm, I had no such problem with Elminster as you, but the female commoners did the exact same thing in my game as in yours. Could be a problem with bgt...

My bet is that one of these has muddled things considerably - I didn't even know these existed. BG1 NPC repairs Coran, Arkion, Angelo, and Shar-Teel, so expect some strangeness there with two mods trying to fix the same problems different ways; as Draco reported (and an SHS poster found out) the problem with commoners in Baldurs Gate is with the tp2 and TRA - check there (and here somewhere :p for the line to add to your tp2 to fix that! That takes care of the commoner string problem.

I will triple check the dialogue calls for Elminster on the BGT version, and see what it looks like, but we don't mess with him. Something must have removed his EscapeAreaDestroy().

Draco, what did you run into that conflicted with the BG2 fixpack, please, so I can try to repair it?

and just as a final heads up:

~SETUP-BGTTWEAK.TP2~ #0 #2 // Finishable Kagain caravan quest

I bet we conflict with that. We install a completely new version of this, which probably does not play well with another component trying the same thing.

Sorry about the birthing pains... we can only build for a "clean" BGT, as interactions with BP mods are rather complicated. SCS-BGT and BG1 NPC should work fine together (they do so splendidly on the Tutu side), and several people have reported no big problems on BP installs, but that is incredibly complex! I would be wary of installing anything else that changes BG1 content with BG1 NPC, until you ask Chevalier or Pro5 (I think Sir BillyBob is currently RL-occupied :p ).

It's was the already known incompatibility problem with UB's ar1303. I just removed the ar1303 lines from the fixpack tp2, so minor dialogues from ub would install correctly. Messed up my installation a few times before I figured this out...

BGTTweaks is supposed to skip some of those if BG1NPC is detected:

But the TP2 is called "BG1NPC.tp2" in last version, so they slip through. Maybe component numbers are also wrong (too lazy to check now).

@pro5 = cool, that means that the BGT tweaks mod definitely would be helped by a quick note over there! We have to keep the legacy behavior (also why we don't do the modern thing of leaving the tp2 in the subdirectory); correct syntax would definitely not include "Setup-".

Any suggestions on what to escape on the BGT side in case BGTTweaks is installed 1st, or is that a forced last-place-in-order mod? This might get messy, because the Angelo stuff etc. will have to be tracked down and separated out from the regualr D and BAF files.

@Draco - no worries on registering, and thanks for keeping the info going. Multi-post away. The tp2 will not tell us what would mess up, because the BGTTwk stuff will partially override the dialogue and BCS files - some odd behaviors will happen, though, because of

WARNING: cannot find block matching [bGTTweak/3/xKAGAIN.BAF]

and because I tried to avoid falsing BCS and BAF stuff (but may have done so here) by having the BG1 NPC baf and dlg materials escape the standard timer and variables by setting them out of range. Even if the BG1 ones are overwritten completely, there will be a major potential for strangeness with hanging dialogue and repeated attempts to access the joined-file dialogue, because project variables can't be set by the new dlg... unless we are very, very, very lucky :p .

Sorry,

Let me clarify, Elminster does leave the area the second time after he gives me the double journal entry. The second journal entry has the title under the date (An odd-looking old man is following me around) whereas the first entry does not. I did't realize that some of the components overlapped though. Anyway I just finished BG1 with no major problems. The ones I encountered were pretty minor. I just avoided talking to Elminster and the female commoners. Good Luck on fixing the problem. It's thanks to you guys that BG enjoys a much higher entertainment value than vanilla. Keep up the Good Work!

P.S. Great job on the tougher final-battle.... It took me half an hour!

Link to comment

The tougher final battle is all DavidW and SCS - he completely rocks! Thank you for the feedback. The good news - if you made it through with only a few minor things, then we got lucky and even though the Tweaks and Project were intended to mis eachother, the end result to the user does not have any appreciable difference. That means after pro5's fixes go in and the release has the corrected TRA reference for tp2, we should be in prettyy good shape :p
