Hi guys. :D I'm new to the forum and modding and general so bear with me if I sound novice like. I have been dabbing with some of the mod tools such as near infinity and and other applications of that nature and I wanted to know if it is possible to create character kits for Icewind Dale one?

Ever since I realized Icewind Dale could be modded I had a form of enthusiasim for creating this cool character classes inb my head. My only fault is how shall I go about doing this? I did check a lot of tutorials on the matter but 'm not sure if it's applicable for Icewind Dale one? :) anyone have any ideas I should approach or tutorials that are applicable for this. I mostly see tutorials for character kits for Icewind Dale II and BG II. Greatl appreciate any suggestions. :p

Hi, both IWD2 and IWD1 are hardcoded as far as the kits are concerned. So you will not be able to use the same WeiDU ADD_KIT way that we use for BG1-BG2. There is one mod that adds kits to IWD2 - it's Tioma's kits. It does so by over-writing the content, and thus carries inherent incompatibility.

Cheers, and welcome to the modding community.

Hey thanks for the help. :D I guess it kind disappointing that I can't make character kits for icewind dale one. I had a dreadknight class idea for the game which I thought would've been pretty cool to implement. :) Maybe there's a way around this because I have explored the file format and I did see some stuff relating to character kits.

I wonder if there's a way I can make a fighter/necromancer multi class through scripting?

You can do the same thing Tioma did. But even in more flexible BG1-BG2 you can only add new classes or kits to hard-coded classes (ie monk, wild mage, sorcerer) only via replacing an existing one. (Art of Weaving does it for example for its own version of a Wild Mage).

Oh I'm starting to see it now. Maybe I can make my dreadknight class then. :D Thanks for the very helpful reply. One more thing. Do you know of any tutorial links that I might follow so I can go about doing this? I'm going to check up some of Tioma's stuff in a few.

I am not sure. The existing tutorials usually cover the flexible way of doing things. People seem to learn to overwrite on their own :DWeiDU documentation will cover all the WeiDU commands for TP2 etc. I dunno, I am dialogue gal, and rather simplistic at that. If you're doing something non-standard - and adding a kit to IWD1 is certainly non-standard- you will probably have to go by trial, error and asking specific questions.

Cam's Classic Tutorial on Kit Making might be of help to you, even if IWD will not accept the outlined coding routines, because it explains which files are involved etc.

Anyways, hang around, maybe someone come along and tell that I am actually wrong (I am actually half-hopeful that someone did or could find the better way than over-writing).

IIRC Tioma did it by letting you swap one Cleric kit with another--each component was "Replace X With Y", and essentially swapped out the descriptions, special abilities (e.g. domain spells) and alignment restrictions as necessary. I *think*, though, that the internal names were the same so if there was any deity-specific dialogue (as with some of the Priests of Xvim if you were a Banite) you'd still be flagged up as the kit from the unmodded game.

Also bear in mind that this is only for IWD2, and only for the Cleric class. :D
