My few-days NPC attempt

Garfield

Recommended Posts

Since it is 4:20AM over and I am sleepless, I think I could spent time usefully by introducing my current project. So, here is the NPC I've been toying with for three days.

Before anyone starts grabibng ropes, torchs, pitchforks or any kind of weapon: my NPC is a Yuan-Ti.

No, he will *not* benefit from PnP Yuan-Ti's huge bonuses. Yuan-Ti are supposed to have +2 in charisma, dexterity and intelligence, to be able to transform into a snake and much more monstruous stuff. Well my NPC wont, for obvious game balance and limited modding skills. He is flagged as human in the game. That does the trick for he is a "pureblood" so he looks like a human.

Now, to annoy extremist PnP players even more, he is of good alignement. :p

So here he is:

Name: Hagen

Race: Pureblood Yuan Ti (human in game)

Alignement: neutral good

Class: Ranger-Beastmaster

Str: 15

Dex: 16

Con: 18

Int: 13

Wis: 15

Cha: 7

Club:**

Quarter staff:**

Sword and shield:**

Two handed weapon style:** (I wanted him badly to use a staff :) )

He can be found on Waukeen's Promenade in a freak show, where you'll need to free him (through money or fight).

He presently has 3 banters with the PC, 2 with each of the Bioware NPC except Aerie and Jaheira with whom he has 4. And Yoshimo that I completely forgot, so I'll write two banters with him as well :)

He currently has interjections with 12 different NPCs including the tree of life. I may record a (lame) soundset for him tomorrow (well, in a few hours...). I am currently checking the interjections I can check (meaning not those in the Underdark) and only 2 of the 5 tested work :p

No custom item or quest right now, but I may devellop it later if someone like the NPC.

Here is his bio:

When asked about his past, Hagen dive deep into his recollections with an obvious sadness. He is a Pureblood: somewhere in his genealogy, some human tried to become a Yuan-Ti through alchemy. The result is a family of snake-like human, which shares the blood of Yuan-Tis. The problem is that Hagen never fitted in the Yuan-Ti society. When his tribe went to war, he escaped in the woods where he remaind for five years, completely oblivious of the rest of the humanity. His peculiar blood lineage made him very close to nature and animals. But sadly, the time came when he had to meet humans again. At this point of the story, Hagen rushes to tell you that he ended up trapped in a circus, and sold to different "masters" to become the key attraction of the freak-show. The rest of the story seems too unpleasant for him to tell, so you do not insist.

So in the end what need to be done before he is "completed" as a "one-day NPC" is the 2 banters with Yoshi, proof reading and fix the interjections I can check.

I also crafted him a portrait which looks... well, *you* tell me how it looks :D

(my apologies to Domi for butcherizing Kivan's pretty face :D )

Fiou, that's all for now... Feel free to comment of course.

It's nice to have a beastmaster ranger - it makes a nice addition, but I think you will have to work on the 'Yuan-Ti" part a bit more, like giving him an innate ability to shape-shift into a snake (cool!) or summon a snake (like Totemic Druid for example). Actually Totemic Druid might be a great alternative class for him, because then he can summon a Spirit Snake w/o you tinkering things :D

And I am quite amuzed by poor Kivan turning green. Anyway, how about this portrait instead? I don't think any mod uses it, and it is definetly male and ranger-ish. AND holds a staff! You can fool with his eyes a bit, make them look like a snake's....

That's an original and really cool NPC idea.

I'm a PnP player, but not necessarily a PnP enforcer. And I really like the 3E idea that any race can play any class.

I hope you do flesh it out a bit more, but I'm quite impressed. You've accomplished an awful lot in 3 days, even if you didn't sleep!

Domi, I love that portrait, but he'd need a much higher charisma. I know charisma and physical beauty are not synonymous, but just look at that facial expression!

Yeah! I completely forgot this NWN portrait; It's awesome, thank you.

I wanted at first to give the summon animal spirit ability and reduce it to the snake spirit but... DLTCEP seems to have problem loading all the files needed, and when I open the spell, he cannot load any of the effect description, so I do not know which effect summon which animal. :D

I'd definitely try my hand at custom spell though (that is, as soon as I found a tutorial :p ).

Totemic druid could be cool too, but I'd have to rewrite many banters :)

Actually, I discovered that ranger was Yuan-Ti's "favoured" class (how do you say that in English... :) Well, if Yuan-Tis dual class from ranger, they wont have XP penalities in their ranger class progress).

Thank you for the comment and tips :D

EDIT: I solved my effecty problem under DLTCEP. :p

If you live in the UK: favoured class

If you live in the USA: favored class

I have no idea how the Aussies spell it.

I would hope that most people who learn English as a second language learn it the way it is used in the UK. American English is a dialect, not a language.

Really? I think he looks sort of frowning and reserved :D It's kindda better than recolored Kivan, just in case someone has both in the party, it could be a bit weird. I'm sure there are more that could fit. There is that hooded one form Rabain's LOTR collection and stuff. :)

@ Andyr: thank you :D

@Berelinde: I have been learning English for 12 years, so I know both UK and US English (and this year I'm learning.... Scottish English :) ) I just wasn't sure about the "favo(u)red" , because in France we call it the "predilection class".

@Domi: Indeed I though about having the two in the party :) I tried to remove is face tatoo, his right hand, the string of the bow and the arrow. On the actual size of the pic, it looked different, but when I scale dit down... :p

I think won't have the perfect portrait anyway: whatever I do (adding scales, tweaking eyes...) it all dissappears when scaling it down :D

Just think UK English for any Australian spelling. We don't have an aversion to the letter U. :)

The NPC sounds quite interesting, Garfield.

Huhu, Yuan-Ti aren't suppose to have horns, are they? :D

I like the NWN one. I guess it will be the final one ^^

I am still fighting with some interjection that either does not appear or repeat twice consecutively (Hagen: You know this drow? What are you waiting for, set her free!

Hagen: You know this drow? What are you waiting for, set her free!) :)

But I do have a few screens :p

The joining dialogue (you'd need money... or strenght):

The character record:

His inventory:

An interjection that works (hurra!!!!(half of it is in French, my DVD seems to mix both DLG although I installed it in English(do this parenthesis make me sound edwinian??))):

Interesting looking NPC Garfield, a Yuan-ti ranger (particularly a pureblood) isn't a difficult thing for me to imagine. :D

I bet he's got an interesting thing or two to say in Nalia's Keep...

I like this NPC. I would definately play with him. And I am with BigRob in thinking about Nalia's keep. I can't wait to see how he reacts!

Nice work! I really like the pic Domi selected for Yuan Ti, but I may just use the NWN one because it's just so...delicious!
