Starting a modded game

I have installed the bg2fixpack mod but I have not seen any changes. I expected to see the dual character button on for my archer but it is still unavailable. Am I suppose to start from a different icon or start comand? Newb for modding. Figured out how to unpack/install mod. Many files and folders indicate modification by date but the game icon seems not to be modified as it still has an older date on it.

BG2 SOA

OS X.4.8

The executable file you launch to start the game should not be modified by a mod (I hope not anyway ). So you launch the game the same way after installing a mod. I'm not sure what you mean by the 'dual character button.' Your archer needs to have certain stats in the class you want to dual him to if you want to dual class him (and I'm not sure what the Fixpack would change about that but then I'm not intimately familiar with all it does).

Oh well looks like this was all for naught as I went back to check stats and found out that I can only dual to a cleric. I was hoping to create an Archer/magic-user but no dice. What to do w/ all those scrolls that I have been hoarding? I do not really want to start over. Can I do multi-player and pull a second PC into the existing game?

thanks for the input as it made me see what I have been overlooking this whole time...darn it.

Yes. You would copy the saved game subfolder you want from the 'save' folder to 'MPsave' (might be slightly different for BG2 - I specialise in BG1/Tutu). Then create a multiplayer session, a new character, then load your saved game and import that character (might also have to make sure you don't have a full party).

Or alternately, you could modify your main PC's stats with something like ShadowKeeper or NearInfinity. Most people would consider that 'cheating' but hey... whatever makes the game funner for you. (And if you raised one stat at the expense of lowering another, that'd be reasonable enough I suppose ).

Thanks Miloch. I think that I will go the MP route as I do not recall ever running a cleric in my 30 yrs of playing D&D. So why start now? I tried editing some saved game files with NearInfinity a few months ago but could not get the saved file to open. Seems like it would even crash the game (SoA).

Though I don't know why NI wouldn't've worked (a lot of Mac users mod with it) unless the poster changed something to an invalid (game-crashing) value.

Maybe you could get your hands on TeamMacBG's QNDBG too. I dunno if it's still up on any of the mirrors but other Mac users might have it.

Edit: This link appears to work.

To be able to (among other things) properly edit save games with NearInfinity you need to have files named 'baldur.exe' and 'bgconfig.exe' in your main BG folder - these can be empty text files, NI just checks for their presence. Alternatively, you can use QNDBG which Miloch linked to, though it's a bit flaky when running 10.4.x in my experience. Be sure to back up your saved games in any case.

I downloaded QNDBG from the link provided but I believe it's got to run under Classic (I'm on a MacBook so intel I'm afraid). Is there an updated version I can download? I've tried looking but none of the links (on several sites) work.

QNDBG is a native OS X app, but it's from the 10.1 era (the "current" version is from 2001 or thereabouts, there aren't any newer versions floating around) so there are no guarantees that it will work well with Intel Macs. If it won't run I recommend using Near Infinity - it's a great deal more complex, but it does everything QNDBG does and more (bear in mind my above note about the exe files).

Correct. It requires Mac OS X 10.4.x with the Java 5 Update (any should do, but you should always have the latest; run Software Update).

I don't link to it because then I have to link to the source and give the "read the license" spiel. Ugh. :)
