Patching failed for SoA on Vista

i'm trying to play SoA on Vista and my native resolution is 1280 x 800 (i think) but the largest I can get it to play on my computer is 1024 x 768 and when i try to set up the wsm and accept the 1280 x 800 as my x and y axis it stops saying:

You need to patch your game before using wsm.

If you already done so, read the 'common problems' sticky, and do as it instructs you.
