betatesting tweaks and tricks (and my notes about my playthrough!)

Recommended Posts

For anyone wondering, there is a cool component inside tweaks and tricks named "Fair fights". Readme here: https://github.com/BGforgeNet/bg2-tweaks-and-tricks/blob/master/docs/gameplay.md#fair-fights

While there is a "safe" component, there is also a risky component that does the following:

Quite a few creatures in the game are wearing items that grant them various protections and buffs such as Globe of Minor Invulnerability, Speed, etc (Kahrk being one notorious example, but there's more). Presumably, the developers' intention was to compensate for the lacking AI. However, nowadays there are many AI-enhancing mods, such as SCS (which lets enemies pre-buff, too). With powerful AI, having extra free protections seems unjustified and plain unfair. This removes all such items from all creatures. This is a power user component as it hasn't been thouroughly tested. You've been warned.

Note, though, that some items are actually needed to progress in the game, as you can see from the code (e.g Aldeth: https://github.com/BGforgeNet/bg2-tweaks-and-tricks/blob/master/tnt/components/fair_fights/mages.tpa).

So if you have any suggestions on the technical execution or have anything to report by playing the game, posts here in this topic would be welcome.
I'm starting my playthrough with the "risky" component above, hopefully, on sunday.

Started today. Firebead gives 300 gold if you click on him 28 times. If you read on the .net, it's 30 times. Not true. Using BG EE, 2.6.
Got 345 xp before leaving Candlekeep. I didn't kill anyone (apart from the bandits) and did all the quests.

Thoughts about the game.

- Charisma 3 really makes an impact on Baldur’s gate EE. What I experienced: everyone treats you like dirt, starting from Winthrop, Hull saying that younglings are the cause of iron shortage due to their laziness, being accused of having killed the cat of the little girl in the waterfall, being unable to get aldeth sashenstar quest to end with Quileu not believing you were rewarded with both the cloak and the helmet of Balduran.

- Bards are really atrocious in this game. I’ve used Garrick and only for the song all the time. He had almost no spells, even if he reached level 10. I also discovered that, by being low intelligence, his spellbook gets full almost immediately. He basically siphoned 1/6 of my experience to no result.
I used him only to sing his harp, only to discover that the bonus in BG:EE for the bard song are really really low and you’re supposed to use a mod to change bard songs to their IWD counterpart.
Add on top of that that I had to install the following tweak: Bigger Bard song by Tresset, otherwise it was not good enough

- The Bandit’s camp is really empty without the SCS component. I installed the Call for help, without the difficulty component. And it was disappointing.

- I think that there is no point on playing with a full party if you don’t use BG1NPC mod.

- I didn't meet any bug using the Tweaks and Tricks component that removes the item from Npcs.

Almost all of those reaction checks are based on the charisma of whoever the NPC is talking to (and the party's reputation). Put someone with a decent charisma up front in the first slot, and your problems go away.

Vanilla bard song provides fear immunity. Very useful, especially since so many mages use Horror. Then it also grants +1 luck, which is extra physical damage dealt and a bonus to hit and a reduction in magical damage taken all at once. It's not a waste at all. When you want a bit more oomph - then you start using wands. I ran Garrick in my no-spellcasting party, and despite his very low kill count I would classify him as essential.

Also, the range on vanilla bard song? It covers the entire area (but only party members). You don't need that tweak at all with Garrick.

No, it's still 30 times. The condition in his script is "NumTimesTalkedTo(30)". You're being thrown off by the fact that it counts the quest dialogue as well as the repetitive options.

Incidentally, the version you meet in Beregost is carrying exactly 300 less gold than the version you meet in Candlekeep. It doesn't matter for the script, because the gold he gives you doesn't come from what he's carrying, but it's there in the creature file.

I always play with high charisma and I was curious to see what were the differences in treatment toward <charname> if he had low charisma. The fact that you have to put the "leader" in the first slot to overrule the low charisma was something I learned only recently, but thanks!!

For the bard song - are you sure about the entire area? Because the moment my own character went a little far from Garrick, I would lose the bonus. I'm sure of that, because I didn't know about tresset tweak and I searched for a mod adding a bigger area radius for bards song for this very exact reason.

On having a party "face" ... mostly, the reason to put them in the first slot is that when you click on an NPC as a group, that's who talks to them. That placement also matters more directly when you're looking for the shop discount; that only cares about who's in the first slot, regardless of who talks to the NPC.

On vanilla bard song range ... it has to do with how the various songs are implemented. All of the kitted bard songs - and presumably other songs you might add - use a projectile for their targeting. Specifically, a standard medium area of effect, party-friendly.

A vanilla bard's song works differently; it has no projectile and just affects all party members directly. Unlimited range, but the tradeoff is that it doesn't help allies and summons that aren't explicitly in the party.

Do you have anything in your setup that changed bard songs? Vanilla bard song is fjbardb.spl.

1) My changelog.bat is the following:

:: Replace ########.### and ********.*** with the file name you are looking for.
:: Run the batch file in the BGII directory and see the change-log.txt.
:: You can make multiple logs from multiple files if you copy-paste the last line, change the log txt files number and remove the "::" at the start.

:: Ersetzt ########.### und ********.*** durch den Dateinamen, nach dem Ihr sucht.
:: Führt die Batch-Datei im BGII Verzeichnis aus und seht in die change-log.txt.

WeiDU.exe --log nul --change-log fjbardb.spl>change-log/change-log.txt --out change-log
:: WeiDU.exe --log nul --change-log fjbardb.spl>change-log/change-log1.txt --out change-log

That's the output I get:

[WeiDU.exe] WeiDU version 24700

[WeiDU.log] PARSE ERROR at line 117 column 1-22

Near Text: COMPONENTE

     syntax error

[WeiDU.log]  ERROR at line 117 column 1-22

     Parsing.Parse_error

ERROR: parsing [WeiDU.log]: Parsing.Parse_error

Mods affecting FJBARDB.SPL:

Do you see any blatant error?

2) I don't know what to think about the component:
~TNT/TNT.TP2~ #0 #3 // Improved trap detection: increase trap sense range: v8.27
~TNT/TNT.TP2~ #0 #4 // Trap reminders -> disclose trap type: v8.27

from Tweaks and Tricks. Basically, even if your thief hasn't "detect traps" activated, he will have an innate sense that will make him shout "TRAPS" when there are traps near.  I find it cheaty, but I also enjoy it a lot. What do I do... Mmmm

Was it a recent change? Because I don't understand why Tresset had to make this tweak at all if the mod is actually redundant. I'm planning to install BG2, and Tresset's tweak bigger bard songs is one of the tweak I would like to install.

The tweak does make a difference.

For vanilla bards (such as Garrick), it allows their song to affect allies and summons in addition to the party.

For skalds, blades, and the HLA "Enhanced Bard Song" (such as Haer'Dalis), it greatly increases the range of the song.
