ericp07
Hello, Sorry for the length of this post...and I don't know if it's mod-related, or just because I have several mods installed (hoping that's not the cause!) In an extended test game, with a bunch of mods installed (but currently only one mod NPC in party), I've played through SoA and into ToB. Just talked to Yaga-Shura, and am trying to get to Marching Mountains from her area. Every time I load the game and try to move the party to this area, I get a CTD. The last thing I see on the screen is the "Loading Area" screen, but the progress bars don't even start to show up; immediate CTD I don't know if I should try going to another area (like Watcher's Keep) first, then try to travel to Marching Mountains. I'll give that a shot, to see if it works, but I predict it won't. I've just got some NPC mods, a couple kit mods, and Crossmod Banter Pack installed. I believe all are the most current versions. Here's the WeiDU Log: // Log of Currently Installed WeiDU Mods // The top of the file is the 'oldest' mod // ~TP2_File~ #language_number #component_number // [subcomponent Name -> ] Component Name Of course, this problem has me unable to proceed in the game, so any help will be most welcome! I get the crash regardless of screen resolution. I've noticed that, if I set it to 1024x768, I get a lot of CTDs when moving to another area on the map, or sometimes even when I try to move any or all of the party in any direction in a given map area. These crashes happen less when I set the resolution down to 800x600, but that hasn't solved this inability to enter Marching Mountains. Please help! Thanks, Eric Link to comment
devSin
You shouldn't enable 3D support in Mac OS X; you'll notice a bunch of flakiness that wouldn't occur with 3D drawing disabled. (If you're still crashing after disabling 3D support, post just the "Thread n Crashed" section of the new crash log.) I would also strongly recommend disabling all those "haxies" (/Library/Application Enhancers/*), at least while you're playing the game (it shouldn't be a problem in this case, but in general, you're just asking for trouble with them installed). OK, I'll disable 3D support. My graphics card isn't that high-end anyway As for the haxies, most of them are expired (shareware), so I'll look through and remove those that have, and disable those that are left when playing. Wasn't sure how much of that crash log to post, but I'll isolate the crashing thread and post that portion next time (if and when there is a next time). Thanks! Eric Link to comment
devSin
The haxies operate by injecting their code directly into running applications - they modify the system at a level that shouldn't be allowed (they abuse the input manager system to have their code running and able to interact with running applications). While I wouldn't be terribly worried with BG, I'd be surprised if you hadn't experienced issues with other (especially Cocoa) applications. 3D acceleration was never really supported under Mac OS X; in many cases, the game will actually run slower (even with a high-end GPU) than without it. From the log, it looks like a corrupt item (which will be from one of the mods), but I want to see without all the GL shutdown calls. With 3D acceleration off, you might get an assertion dialog; the text of the dialog is useful in determining if this is a common item corruption issue. Link to comment

Interestingly, BGII is the only app on my (other) computer that ever shows any unwanted behavior. Now, it's spare user account to the rescue I created an additional user account a while back, with a very no-nonsense set-up. So, I just now logged into that account, made sure nothing was suspicious in System Preferences, then went into BGConfig. I disabled 3D Acceleration, but noticed that 3D Animations was still checked, as well as 32-bit textures. Launched the game and loaded the saved game. This time, when I tried to get the party to travel from Forest of Mir to Marching Mountains, the progress bars on the Loading Area screen started moving. They got about 1/3 of the way up, then the game crashed. A dialog appeared, as you predicted, saying "Assertion failed in CGameEffect.cpp at line number 1536". There was nothing else in the dialog box other than an OK button. I'm sticking with 800x600 resolution for now. It may be worth noting that I have some custom items in my override folder, a few of which are equipped in the party. A couple of these items were obviously not created well, as instead of descriptive text, I see lines of dialog text that have nothing to do with the items. Same goes for something I see on my protagonist's inventory screen: under her name, there's a chopped portion of a line of dialog text I've never seen before. I haven't seen such behavior in that location since I tried the Subrace mod, which I've long since ditched. Hope this leads to more clues. At least I got a little progress this time Thanks, Eric Link to comment
devSin
The haxies are global, so the new account wouldn't help (they'd still be loaded from /Library/InputManagers). 3D animations and 32-bit textures are fine (the former is unrelated, and the latter won't be used without 3D acceleration). The cause of your crash is almost certainly an incorrect effect index in one of the ITM files (before, you experienced a CTD in OpenGL because the assertion dialog couldn't be drawn when in 3D mode). That the strings are messed up isn't good, though; either you tried installing a mod while the game or an editor (like Near Infinity) was open, or perhaps you made changes to dialog.tlk after installing mods (like installing the Baldurdash GTU TLK after installing WeiDU mods)? So, I wasn't as good as I thought *L* I'll play the game under the alternate login anyway. In any case, I've disabled the Application Enhancer and other haxies. I'll remember that bit, as no one has ever mentioned it before (that I've seen). I'll go back to using the animations and textures. I don't notice much change, visually, oddly enough. There was an item called ANODAR. I got assertion failure when trying to use it, so I removed and deleted it. that was several days ago, though. I'll have to be more sparing in my use of custom items. I never, ever run the game when anything else (excluding system processes) is open, and I'm not aware of any changes being made to dialog.tlk. I certainly don't ever touch it. Every mod I have says that it "should be compatible with most other WeiDU mods," and I've been trying to keep things in the best order of installation possible. I still have a couple more mods to install and test, but I won't touch them till this issue is resolved. I don't use Baldurdash as such, but I understand BG2 Fixpack is a close relative. Still hopeful, Eric Link to comment
devSin
The BG2 fixpack supersedes Baldurdash, but one common cause of bad TLK strings is changing the dialog.tlk after a mod has changed it (destroying all the changes made by the mods); this used to be because the player would overwrite the modified dialog.tlk with the Baldurdash one. It could also just be a bad mod that used absolute strrefs, but seeing it in the character record screen is never a good sign. The good news is that is not really a serious bug, just some mismatched references in some of the files, and shouldn't hinder (too much) gameplay. As far as the assertions go, we can write up a quick mod that will identify and correct any item effect index issues automatically, but it may take a bit. Holidays and laziness and all. Even with my limited schema here, the dialog.tlk issue makes sense to me There's likely a mod in there somewhere (in my installation, that is) that's messing with the character class text on that particular screen. A little utility mod like the one you mention would be ultra-cool! I'll do what I can with what I've got in the mean time... Thanks and happy holidays, Eric Link to comment
ericp07
Now, of course, things had to go from bad to worse. I've seen the return of a CTD when I try to create a new character, of any race, and click on a kittable class. I tried creating a fighter a few times (male, female, human, elf), and got this crash each time. Here's the portion of the Crash Log that shows what happened: Thread 9 Crashed: 0 <Unknown disk fragment> 0x028615e4 GetHelpText__32CUIControlButtonCharGenKitOptionFPC13CAIObjectType + 212 1 <Unknown disk fragment> 0x0287e224 ResetKitPanel__17CScreenCreateCharFP8CUIPanelP11CGameSprite + 260 2 <Unknown disk fragment> 0x0287f674 ResetPopupPanel__17CScreenCreateCharFUlP11CGameSprite + 2196 3 <Unknown disk fragment> 0x0286d9b0 SummonPopup__17CScreenCreateCharFUlP11CGameSprite + 256 4 <Unknown disk fragment> 0x0286858c OnLButtonClick__37CUIControlButtonCharGenClassSelectionF6CPoint + 652 5 <Unknown disk fragment> 0x02733de4 OnLButtonUp__16CUIControlButtonF6CPoint + 308 6 <Unknown disk fragment> 0x0271dad4 OnLButtonUp__10CUIManagerF6CPoint + 132 7 <Unknown disk fragment> 0x0288154c OnLButtonUp__17CScreenCreateCharF6CPoint + 28 8 <Unknown disk fragment> 0x02a3e318 AsynchronousUpdate__7CChitinFUiUiUlUlUl + 1512 9 <Unknown disk fragment> 0x026255fc AsynchronousUpdate__13CBaldurChitinFUiUiUlUlUl + 124 10 <Unknown disk fragment> 0x02624d98 MainAIThread__13CBaldurChitinFPv + 344 11 <Unknown disk fragment> 0x02a3b394 MainAIThread + 36 12 ...ple.CoreServices.CarbonCore 0x90bf1e50 InvokeThreadEntryUPP + 24 13 ...ple.CoreServices.CarbonCore 0x90bf1a70 CooperativeThread + 220 14 libSystem.B.dylib 0x9002bd08 _pthread_body + 96 The last time this happened, I had to go back to my clean install of the game plus BG2 Fixpack, then install and test mods one by one...which eventually brought me to where I am now, with the main topic of this thread. The only thing I've changed is that I've uninstalled Crossmod Banter Pack to then install the newest version for Mac OS X. I hesitate to blame that for these crashes, but I can't rule anything out at this point. Feels like I'm digging a deeper and deeper hole...so in need of help! Thanks, Eric Link to comment
devSin
Nope, this is the expected crash bringing up the kit selection screen (you won't get it choosing a monk, sorcerer, barbarian, or mage). I'm not aware of any immediate remedy; it should eventually work if you keep trying. It's possible that the addition of mods exacerbates it, but it's a bug that can trigger regardless of what you do (or what you have installed). Link to comment

It's possible that the addition of mods exacerbates it, but it's a bug that can trigger regardless of what you do (or what you have installed). Roger that. I'll keep trying, then, till it works. I have seen success with that part recently, so I know it can work, at least. So now it's back to the main issue. It's interesting to note that, when my party entered Forest of Mir area, I got a CTD every time I moved the party onto the rocks that lead to the central island. The only way I could get them to that part of the map was to use ctrl-J (MoveToArea() enabled in the CLUAConsole). When the party arrived, I moved them all over that island, but there were no creatures there of any kind. When I then moved the party to the right side of the screen, they fought a couple enemies, but there was supposed to be a magic-user of some sort over there, and in fact there wasn't. The only useful part of the Forest of Mir area was the part where the party entered, fought some enemies, and met the merchant. As I said, back to the main issue, being the CTD when trying to move to Marching Mountains. I still can't get there yet, but I'll sit tight and await further insights - E Link to comment
devSin
If you have a copy of weidu-mac, try running the following and report the results: BACKUP TEMP AUTHOR devSin MODDER NO_IF_EVAL_BUG BEGIN ~Test-O~ INSTALL_BY_DEFAULT NO_LOG_RECORD PRINT "+ Checking items and spells ..." COPY_EXISTING_REGEXP GLOB "^.+\.ITM$" TEMP "^.+\.SPL$" TEMP PATCH_IF (SOURCE_SIZE > 0x72) BEGIN READ_ASCII 0x0 h (3) READ_LONG 0x64 ao READ_SHORT 0x70 ix FOR (READ_SHORT 0x68 na; na; na -= 0x1) BEGIN READ_SHORT ao + 0x1E n READ_SHORT ao + 0x20 x PATCH_IF (ix != x) BEGIN PATCH_PRINT "%SOURCE_FILE% bad effect index" END PATCH_IF !("%h%" STRING_COMPARE_CASE "ITM") BEGIN ao += 0x38 END ELSE ao += 0x28 ix += n END END BUT_ONLY_IF_IT_CHANGES If you don't have a copy: find the setup.exe file for the G3 BG2 fixpack (will be named something like bg2fixpack-setup.exe) and copy it to your main BG2 folder. Rename this new copy to "weidu" (without the quotes). Open BBEdit or TextWrangler or TextEdit or whatever you use and create a new text document. Click on the quote button for this post and copy the code (between the code brackets, from BACKUP TEMP to BUT_ONLY_IF_IT_CHANGES) and paste into the new text document (Safari can sometimes capture "nbsp" characters if you just copy and paste from the browser window, but it should work fine from the editing field that pops up when quoting a post). Save the document as testo.tp2 onto the Desktop (or wherever; location doesn't matter). Finally, open Terminal (/Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app) and type "cd " (cd followed by a space; no quotes) at the prompt; find your main BG2 folder (a generic install has the BG2 folder name as BG2 - SoA) and drag it onto the Terminal window (this will insert the path to the folder; e.g., you'd end up with cd /Applications/BG2\ \-\ SoA if the BG2 folder were in your Applications folder). Switch back to Terminal and hit Return, and the prompt should change to the new path (e.g., from MyComputerName:~ userName$ to MyComputerName:/Applications/BG2 - SoA userName$). Assuming everything is correct, type "./weidu " (./weidu followed by a space; no quotes), in the Terminal window, find the testo.tp2 file previously created and drag and drop it onto the Terminal window (this should again fill in the path to the file). Switch back to Terminal, hit Return, and after the mod finishes "installing," copy and paste the Terminal window contents here. Afterward, you may notice some folders or files in the "temp" folder in your BG2 folder; you can safely delete all the contents of this folder (just make sure not to delete the temp folder itself, only the stuff inside it). ericp07
I got WeiDU to install this, but got a fatal parsing error, so it wasn't installed, though it created the .DEBUG and other files usually created in the main BGII folder. Not sure how to proceed. - E Link to comment
devSin
Go ahead and download this file. Decompress the archive and drag the "weidu" and "testo.tp2" files to your BG2 folder (replace the "weidu" you created when asked). As before, "cd" into your BG2 folder, and then "./weidu testo.tp2" and post the results (just copy/paste from the Terminal window). Link to comment
