AzureDrag0n1 Posted July 18, 2009 Posted July 18, 2009 So I am in Spell Hold Maze fighting a Lich that is southeast of the Umber Hulk trap. I had all my gear taken away from me and due to this there is no way for me to hurt this regular normal Lich I encountered. He is immune to all spells level 8 and lower even after I destroyed all his defenses. Well to be clear level 5 and lower spells except for remove/dispel magic gives no message and everything above it gives a message that he is immune to it. Ruby Ray does work though since it knocked out his spell trap and spell immunity. His defenses include when you meet him: Chain Contingency: Spell Turning Simulacrum Mislead Spell Immunity: Divination Contingency: Protection From Magic Weapons That is pretty much the extent of his defenses. So after I removed his Spell Immunity and his Mislead and his spell trap I fired tons and tons of damage spells, breach, dispel magic from Keldorn, and removed magics. Everything I throw at him does nothing. It all says that he is immune to it. I cast chain lighting, horrid wilting, sunfire, whatever it is, it does nothing. His base form with no defenses on seems to be immune to everything. So I try to melee him with fire elemental, minute meteors, and a + 3 spear which is the best weapon I have. Breach seems to not work as he is immune to level 5 and lower. Neither does Dispel. I mean Dispel sort of works but doesn't. I will dispel some things 100% but other things I guess there is a 0% chance to dispel like protection from magical weapons. I am just about ready to give up and just cheat to insta kill him as it it impossible right now with all the tools available to me to hurt him. Running away to wait it out is not an option as he can teleport to your location as well as the pit fiends he summons. There is one last thing I might try. I might use 2 limited one time wishes and cast time stop as well as shape change and maybe try to devour his mind but I doubt that will work. Cookiemole Posted July 27, 2009 Posted July 27, 2009 yah, i basically installed the same features as you and found the part of the game in spellhold without your gear to be the hardest part of the game...you can't even avoid that lich because you need that vampire's hand in the room down the hall! i would just run away and kill the summons that teleport on top of you...he only has a limited number of them. i eventually had anomen summon up a posse of skeleton warriors to take him on. if you have someone who can do the same, i would only send them in one at a time. no need getting them all killed in one death spell! his spells will eventually run out, and protection from magical weapons will run its course. his elemental protections will theoretically run out eventually too, but those last a turn a level so you're looking at a 35 minute wait.
DavidW Posted July 27, 2009 Posted July 27, 2009 Liches (even in vanilla BG2) are immune to electrical damage and to 5th level and lower spells, so Chain Lightning and Sunfire are a waste of time. Horrid Wilting is being blocked by a Protection from Magic Energy spell; you could theoretically take it down or dispell it but it's quite a long way through his buffs. Breach will work if you lower enough of his magical defences, since you've got the "more consistent breach" component installed. You could also wait out his protection from normal weapons spells, they don't last toooo long.
DrAzTiK Posted July 27, 2009 Posted July 27, 2009 You could also wait out his protection from normal weapons spells, they don't last toooo long Liches are not naturally immune to normal weapons ??

AzureDrag0n1 Posted October 26, 2009 Author Posted October 26, 2009 Found out why he was immune to ADHW. Had a component in I think SR that made it not affect undead.
Demivrgvs Posted October 27, 2009 Posted October 27, 2009 Found out why he was immune to ADHW. Had a component in I think SR that made it not affect undead."This spell evaporates moisture from the bodies of every living creature within the area of effect, inflicting 1d6 damage per caster level (maximum 20d6)." SR's Horrid Wilting doesn't work on undead creatures as per PnP. A quick explanation may be that such creatures aren't damaged by being dehydrated.
AzureDrag0n1 Posted October 29, 2009 Author Posted October 29, 2009 This really complicates things but it might be because I rely on that spell too much to hurt tough creatures. However this basically means I have no way to fight him other than to wait out his physical defenses until they expire, maybe. I guess it is back to Azure Edge sneak up and kill before he can raise defenses tactic again. As the wait it out tactic might not be possible. I tried that against another Lich in the Unseeing Eye Quest but he teleported my entire party back to him when I tried to run away. I am not sure which mod does that though.
Demivrgvs Posted October 30, 2009 Posted October 30, 2009 This really complicates things but it might be because I rely on that spell too much to hurt tough creatures.Yeah, vanilla's Horrid Wilting made almost all spells look ridiculously weak (party friendly, very large AoE, huge amount of damage, best damage type available). However this basically means I have no way to fight him other than to wait out his physical defenses until they expire, maybe. I guess it is back to Azure Edge sneak up and kill before he can raise defenses tactic again. If you can hit the lich with a weapon I think you've already done 90% of the work, no matter if it's Azuredge or Daystar. Anyway, if you want to go with damage-dealing spells I may suggest you to try Disintegrate (if the lich is not under II) or Prismatic Spray (tough some rays are not so great against liches). Delayed Blast Fireball deals a considerable amount of damage too with SR. The best way to deal with liches imo is to use mages to tear down the spell/combat protections and warriors to actually deal the damage.
