Assertion error

Hello I am getting this error:An Assertion failed in ChVidImaged3d.cpp at line number 899.

It happens when I try to load a save game.

I have searched and found a similar problem in the forum the hot fix was to install this file:shield_animations_fix.rar into the BG2 directory and then run setup shieldfix_exe.

My problem I can not find the exe file shieldfix_exe.

Can someone help me find it please?

Thanks

Please post more info about what mods you have installed and where the crash is occurring.

The shield_animation_fix deals only with a specific issue in IRv2 when encountering monsters with shields equipped (typically skeletons) which are mainly found in the BG1 part of BGT. If you installed IR with the latest hotfixes, then the issue will already be fixed. Since you say it crashes on loading a save, I'd wager that this is not what's happening, though.

Ok I am playing BG2. The assertion error does not always happen. I have 3 saved games that crash with this error upon trying to load them. I just recently loaded a new BG2 game with tob then patched it then I added G3 mods as listed in the following weidu file: no nonG3 mods. All the mods are the newest versions available on your site.

I did not find any install order that would cause compatability issues listed in these download and install instructions for the mods I installed.

Can I upload a save game to this site as an attachment?

Can you help me get this working again?

~BG2FIXPACK/SETUP-BG2FIXPACK.TP2~ #0 #3 // BETA Core Fixes (please check the readme!): v9

It seems that you have the initial v9 of the BG2 Fixpack's Beta Core Fixes installed. There was an issue with the Shield spell in that version which caused similar problems. It was corrected a few hours after the initial release, but unfortunately, some people had already grabbed the faulty version by then.

Try re-downloading and re-installing the fixpack. For reference, the version number beside the fixpack entries in your WeiDU.log should then be v9.01.

Ok But now what, according to this:

The Fixpack is designed to work with Baldur's Gate II with or without the Throne of Bhaal expansion pack. In terms of installation order, the Fixpack should be installed after the official patches, but before other mods. Do not install the Fixpack alongside other fixpacks such as Baldurdash. There is a compatibility and redundancy thread in the Fixpack forums for the most recent information; these are the known incompatibilities and redundancies as of v5:

Do I have to uninstall all of the other G3 mods first?

Do I also have to uninstall BG2FIXPACK v9 or can I just install BG2FIXPACK v9.01 over the top of BG2FIXPACK v9?

Can I leave all the other mods installed when I do this?

Sorry but I am new to this site and I wanted to try out these mods on BG2 I just got started in the game and I like it so far played only up til Yoshimo joins the group on the second floor of the starting dungeon.

That would be the safest practice, but it's not absolutely required. See below for an explanation.

It doesn't really make any difference. If you choose to install v9.01 on top of v9, you'll get a [R]einstall option in your WeiDU prompt for each of its components. This will update the fixpack and automatically re-install any other mods that had been installed after it.

Can I leave all the other mods installed when I do this?

As noted above, if you choose to re-install the fixpack, all of your other mods will be automatically re-installed as well.

Well it worked so far. I reinstalled the BG2Fixpack and now have v9.01 installed.

All my other G3 mods are reinstalled as well except for the Sword Coast Stratagems II mod. All my previous save games now load without crashing.

Now I am going to reinstall Sword Coast Stratagems II to see if that works as well.

Will post back after I test that final step.

Wow the problem is back.

The same 3 save games that had this error:An Assertion failed in ChVidImaged3d.cpp at line number 899, now have it again.

The error came back after I reinstalled SCS2.

I paid attention during the install to see if I could guess what is causing the issue.

I have only one idea I turned on Improved shapeshifting in SCS2.

And in the save games that give me the assertion error Jaheira is in shapeshifted form. In the saves when she is in human form I have no problem loading them.

But the 3 saves that she is in a bear form all crash with the assertion error message.

I am going to go back and reinstall the SCS2 mod and this time uninstall only the Improved shapeshifting to see if that makes a difference on my 3 save games that crash.

Well That fixed it again. My assertion error is caused by saving a game in which a druid is in animal form at the time of the save and you have SCS2 installed with improved shapeshifting. It might also be some other combination of installs that I have like the alternate NPC images that might interact with the improved shapeshifting.

So should this thread be moved under SCS2 forum heading for bugs?

If the problem disappears when you uninstall the Improved Shapeshifting component, then it might indeed be related to SCSII.

Feel free to crosspost this in the SCSII forum.
