v21 Improved Shapeshifting causes assertion errors?

Whenever I equip my druid with paws of shapeshifting (brown bear's or wolf's, it doesn't matter), then save and reload my save, the game crashes and I get this error:

If you are playing on one of the higher resolutions (higher than the first unsupported one, IIRC), they have been known to crash the game with this assertion. Widescreen mod is the recommended way to play at higher resolutions.

We probably had the same issue in a multiplayer game, though curiously it crashed only one of the two clients - not both. Crash did not occur on every token shapeshift or save/load, but often enough for us to start testing things around a bit. The crashes happened (not always, but when they did) at the exact moment Jaheira shapeshifted with one of those pawn tokens. It was my friends client every time (we did swap host/client around but if I remember correctly I still didn't crash) so it might be system specific. We had the same mods of course, including Widescreen mod.

 

The error message in TobEx console seems similar: "ASSERTION FAILED! Return Address: 0x9FFB75 File: ChVidImage3d.cpp Line: 899 Expression: False Message: CVidCell::FXRenderer3dSetPalette: LoadFrame() failed"

 

After removing improved shapeshifting and restarting we didn't get any such crashes, and that was the only thing we changed in our identical setups. Others have had similar issues (example: http://forums.gibber...95 ).

 

As a side note, there's a small bug when playing without improved shapeshifting with "faster bears" component. The faster bears affects bear shapeshift forms in a way that it leaves a speed adjustment variable to characters "status effects" even after returning to humanoid form. This effect slows down character slightly (almost not noticeable) but also blocks some other effects like the movement speed buff from Boots of Speed from taking effect. Using Ctrl+R on the affected character (to clear the status effects) returns regular movement speed and ability to benefit from Boots of Speed etc..
