How can I troubleshoot installing EET?

I'm trying to install EET on the Steam version. It doesn't work. How do troubleshoot it?

The error I get every time is:

Invalid Baldur's Gate directory, or incorrect Baldur's Gate installation.

I am doing this on a completely clean install, of BG-Enhanced Edition with Siege of Dragonspear installed. I made sure it was clean by deleting the folder entirely, and redownloading.

I have tried it after using modmerge, as the instructions say. Then I tried without modmerge, just to see what happened, and I got the same error.

I've tried it both by hand, and using Project Infinity. I've tried it with and without Unfinished Business mod. I tried it on a different drive.

I always get the same error message.

How do I figure out what the problem is?

EET.exe is supposed to run on your BGII:EE game.
