[Mac] Which mod is crashing my game?

Hello,

Due to unresolvable issues with some mods (that I may have installed in the wrong order), I've completely reinstalled BGII - SoA/ToB and applied the latest patch. This is on a G4 Quicksilver Mac running OS X 10.4.10. I then installed several game and NPC mods, starting with the Fixpack and skipping what I suspected to be non WeiDU mods. After adjusting things with BGConfig, I attempted to start a new game...and the program crashed after loading the new game about 3/4 of the way.

I tried this twice, once using an imported character (one that I've been using for a while now), and once creating a new character. The crash occurs at the same point either way, so the game doesn't even get to the opening sequence in Irenicus' dungeon.

This is exactly the opposite of what I thought would happen, as I figured reinstalling everything would result in a more playable game, not an unplayable game! If anyone is willing to help me troubleshoot and solve the problem, I'd be most grateful. If worse comes to worst, I suppose I could reinstall yet again, but then test one mod at a time.

One or more mods has to be the culprit here, as I've been able to play the game in the past, but not now.

Thanks and happy gaming,

Eric

Here's the WeiDU log. I hope it helps identify the problem with my game:

Oh, darn. You just went through all that work, and I see stuff in your installation order.

Tweaks should go last.

Crossmod Banter Pack should go after all the NPC mods.

Neither of these is causing your crash.

What resolution are you using?

I use one of the unsupported resolutions: 1024x768

I'd go higher, but then it gets hard to see everything. I'd like to avoid going to a lower resolution, if possible.

Well, time to reinstall everything...again *L*

Thanks,

Eric

Please, before you reinstall everything, try 800 x 600. I know that it's a real bummer to use the lower resolution, but at least you could rule that out as a contributing factor.

I'm a chemist by trade, which means that I'm into the experimental principle. One of the things that encompasses is the policy of making only one change at a time, testing, then moving on to the next change.

You know you're using an unsupported resolution, so try a lower one before scrapping several hours' work.

Definitely worth a try; thanks for the tip! The only odd behavior I've experienced that I thought might be attributable to screen resolution was that, sometimes, my party members would move slowly, or in small spurts, while other times they'd move as quickly and as smoothly as they should. Then there's the well-known (?) issue of the party members sometimes not moving at all when I want to send them to a new spot on the screen, and I have to move them, one at a time and only in straight lines, in order for them to move at all. My only cure for this has been to completely quit the program and restart it.

Well, I've reinstalled the game today, applied the ToB 2.1.2 patch, then copied the whole shebang to my external HD before proceeding. This way, when something goes horribly wrong again, I'll be able to quickly start over :) I've installed only a few game mods, so I'll test with what I've got now before installing any others.

Peace,

Eric

OK, now I don't think the crash has anything to do with a mod. I copied my unmodded install of the game to my internal HD, ran BGConfig to max out graphics, sound, and whatever the third thing is where you have three sliders, set the difficulty to Normal, disabled crit screen shake, then quit and started a new game. I had forgotten how long it takes to create a new character! Well, every time I try this (and I'm playing multiplayer, but just by myself), the game loads to about 3/4 of the way there, then crashes to desktop.

I copied the error details to a text file. I have the option to send a crash report to Apple, but I doubt that would do any good. I'll ask about this on some newsgroups, but I won't hold my breath for help there. The report gives these reasons for the crash:

Exception: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (0x0001)

Codes: KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE (0x0002) at 0x00000ab0

I have no idea what this means, as I'm not technically savvy when it comes to OS X. There's a lot of detailed information after that, but I'll skip it here to save space.

When I look in /cache/data inside the BGII - SoA directory, there's one .bif file present, probably the first area the game uses.

Clues, anyone?

Thanks,

Eric

This is truly an adventure, though not the one I'd hoped for :) I've read all available references on the Web for the crashing problem, and there are precious few suggestions for a fix.

I disabled 3D acceleration and started a new multiplayer game. After I'd created a character, the game began to load, got about 75% loaded (as before), then crashed. "An Assertion failed in InfGame.cpp at line number 6389." Sound familiar? It's a known issue, and something to do with networking is suspected.

I started a single-player game, and it ran to the point after Imoen first talks with the main character, and it says "Paused for saving game," then crashes again. This time, a different error message appears: "Save game failed, do you wish to quit?" Well, no, I don't wish to, but what choice do I have? :)

Someone in one of the on-line forums suggested to another user who was getting the same assertion failure to install the game without a patch, and see if that would help. He reported that doing so indeed allowed him to play, but then he experienced a problem when attempting to access Umar Hills. The game would ask for CD 3, even though it was already present. The fix there is to copy two .bif files from the CD 4 folder's Data folder to the CD 3 folder's Data folder. So, if this comes up, I'll know what to do about it.

My next trick will be to install the game (in progress as I type) with no patches at all, then launch it and attempt first a multiplayer game (by myself), then a single-player game. It will be interesting to see what happens. If all goes well, I'll begin installing mods by first installing the Fixpack, then run the game, and then proceed to install more mods, one at a time, testing by launching the game after each one. This will take a long time, but I don't see an alternative at this point.

Happy gaming (?),

Eric

And so it came to pass that I arrived at a successful, playable install of BGII - SoA/ToB :) My solution is to install from all five CDs (four for SoA plus the ToB disc), but not to apply any patches. I started a test game in multiplayer mode, and was able to get through the opening, all the way till it pauses to save the game, then I was able to both export my created character and save the game.

I then installed the Fixpack v4 mod, and loaded the saved game. All went well, so I created another new test game. No problems. Then I became more bold, and dropped some previously saved characters into the Characters folder, and was able to import them just fine :)

I went ahead and installed a few mods: lvl50, EvilOverrideDialogues, TOBConcurrentRomances, NPC Romance Scripts (for Keldorn only), Stardust's Swords, and Templates (for these last two, you simply drop files into the Override folder). I should probably just continue on with a test game, but I'd rather install more mods *L* I'll address that in another thread, and will happily declare this issue solved!

Thanks to all who offered any input in this :)

Happy gaming (indeed!),

Eric
