Permanently invisible pit fiend

Guest AVE

Recommended Posts

Recently Viconia has reached 13th level and as always, I was very glad to achieve Gate spell.

But when I've used it for the first time with SCS II, I become very frustrated. Pit fiend appears, turns Improved Invisible, and then acts as he's achieved Mislead - appears for a split second when attacking, then disappears again! Even True Sight has no effect on him.

Is it intended behavior, or just a bug as of my mod's cross on each other?

Here is WeiDU log:

I think it's intended. True Sight has effect on him, it dispels the Improved Invisibility, but he then recasts it immediatly (he can cast it once a round).

If your mid-lvl party is protected from evil, it's quite hard to kill him since most likely your true sight will wore off before you kill him. Plus the fact that he'll likely call another Pit Fiend.

Was your party protected from evil ?

I can't remember if it happens only in that case, but I think it should be tuned down a little, since True Sight only dispels once a round while the improved Pit Fiend will cast infinite improved invisibility.

I'll try to cast two True Sights from two party members (Viconia and Jaheira, obviously) slightly offset one another just to see that it really gets dispelled. Despite of log messages down the screen (Pit Fiend: Illusion dispelled), I've just kept seeing him for a split second only when he's attacking my enemies.

Of course I'm protected. Protection from Evil 10' Radius is fast and can be casted well ahead of battle.

I fear that it is made like this not just to make him more tough, but also to keep off powerleveling on my own Pit Fiends (which I've often did in previous walkthroughs :( ).

No, multiple sequental time-shifted True Sights are not helping in making Pit Fiend visible. I've launched four True Sights with 1-second pause between each and now my log is filled with "Pit Fiend: Illusion Dispelled", but no luck - he is invisible.

He is acting like he is constantly under undispellable Mislead, and appears only for a split second. When idle (not attacking anyone) he appears just to wave his 4 arms, strange. I'm starting to think that this is animation bug, but I also can't target him with attacks. I see the usual 'cannot target invisible or sanctuaried creatures'.

Any ideas?

Does glitterdust affect him? That will prevent him from going invisible won't it? Your other choices are to use chain contingency spells since they bypass invisibility, AoE spells, and Planetars or Devas which can see through invisibility.

Seems like these fiends have an item ability like SotM which behaves the same way. As they can use it an unlimited amount of times per round. Whenever you have abilities like that they become broken. Which is one reason why SotM is so broken as you can do the same thing that this demon does.

This is actually being caused by the "Tougher Demons" component of Tactics (which I don't advise installing if you use "Improved Fiends" from SCSII).

I don't have Tactics installed, but I do see the same pattern. Nothing can touch Pit Fiend I summoned, neither GlitterDust nor True Seeing nor Chain Contingency + Bolts of Glory...

Can you clarify exactly what behaviour you're seeing?

I summon Pit Fiend

He (or she?) casts Improved Invisibility

After that, even if I cast True Seeing, he can't be targeted with spells. I did try all other anti-illusion and anti-invisibility spells, from Glitterdust to True Seeing, too! The fiend is said to be sanctuared or invisible, you know the message, so all my direct spells are dismissed

What is worse, even AoE spells and direct spells cast via Chain Contingency appear to not harm him. He stays uninjured all the time.

The only way to bring him pain which I've found is to cast another Pit Fiend and make them clashing each other.

Either I'm utterly lame or something is wrong with the fiends indeed. My weidu.log is in my other message.

Can I check or try anything to help to determine what's the cause of the problem?

At a guess, it's just ordinary magic resistance (which, I think, works against True Sight).

Can you hit him in melee?

Yes, my wizard can hit him in melee sometimes, if I pre-cast Energy Blades and got THACO below 0, for example.

As for magical resistance, True Seeing is said to be unaffected by resistance, in http://www.gibberlings3.net/readmes/readme...scriptions.html for both wizard and priest.

Furthermore, spells like Comet or Sunfire which ignore resistance, can't harm the Pit Fiend, too. Often the game even says it like: Pit Fiend - Spell Inefective

I don't know what the issue is with truesight - you might want to ask Demivrgvs. Pit fiends are immune to fire, which is probably why comet and sunfire aren't working.

Incidentally, your installation order has Wheels of Prophecy and Item Revisions installed after SCSII. This isn't the recommended order.

I have almost the same problem with glabrezu in my game : immune to all magic effect and to +3 or lower weapons (instead of +1 or +2)

I wonder if compatibility with improved fiends component is fine ?

My impression is that usually these sorts of reports end up being false positives - battle is very chaotic.

If you're sure, though, then have a look at the glabrezu file. The one summoned by enemy wizards in SCSII is dw#sumgl.cre - have a look at it in an editor, or if you're not sure how then zip it up and attach it here.

Does glitterdust affect him? That will prevent him from going invisible won't it?
The first guest doesn't have Spell Revisions installed, thus Glitterdust doesn't do what you say (even if vanilla's description already mentioned it).

I don't know what the issue is with truesight - you might want to ask Demivrgvs. Pit fiends are immune to fire, which is probably why comet and sunfire aren't working.
True Seeing bypass magic resistance yes. The effects are set to "not baypass mr" both in vanilla and SR but they bypass it anyway. I may set them to "bypass mr" just to be absolutely sure, but I'm already 99,9% sure.

Comet should work on them within SR as it deals crushing damage instead of fire...Sunfire shouldn't because as David says pit fiends are immune to fire. On a side note, since V3 Sunfire doesn't bypass magic resistance anymore.

I have almost the same problem with glabrezu in my game : immune to all magic effect and to +3 or lower weapons (instead of +1 or +2)
I'd suggest to check the .cre file as David says, the ones within SR are fine, and I'm fairly sure SCS simply create a copy of the respective creature file to assign a different script, thus should be fine too.

I wonder if compatibility with improved fiends component is fine ?
Compatibility between what? SR and SCS? :D

Anyway, I'll try to test these issues if I find some time just to be sure it isn't caused by SR or SR+SCS.

Edit:

I just tested SR V3 without SCSII. True Seeing indeed works against a summoned pit fiend, and there's no magic resistance check. Everything against pit fineds and glabrezus works as intended (e.g. weapons and spells).
