Any clue why this would be happening?
Something went off with the GUI... I would suggest to first uninstall the Widescreen mod, then install either the LadeJarl's Tutu GUI, the W_GUI mod, or even the BG2: GUI skin mod V1.5, then making sure they work as they should by starting the game, then install the Widescreen mod on top, and play happily...

Honestly though, I didn't want to play with the original guis, that's why I didn't install any. But that thing with the icons hasn't happened before. it's weird.

It is because of the set scaling of the GUI, and WSM simply stretches it all, without altering placement. So, when you set your resolution to a large screen (1600x1200, for example) everything is really small and close together.

 

Try something like 1280x1024 or any other scaling applicable to your monitor which isn't too big for the AI to remain usable.
