Game crashes after equipping right ring slot

I just got this bizzare bug after installing Spell Revisions. Equipping the right ring causes the game to freeze up and throws up a 'not responding' message. Googling reveals very little, except that the people that had this problem also had spell revisions installed. I tried setting the resolution to 800x600, disabling 3d acceleration and all that but the problem is still there. What should I do? I really like the mod and I hope there's a different way out then a complete reinstall and changing the install order of the other mods. I'm using quite a few so this is most likely a compatibility thing, but with what?

Here's my weidu.log

Any reason why you're not using the BG2 fixpack ?

Might explain the problem (since I believe SR assumes that BG2 fixpack is installed)

Oh wow. I completely missed it when modding the game. However, now that I am trying to install it, I get an error:

ERROR: illegal 8-byte writing GBERRY7 offset 942 of 922-byte file spin550.spl

ERROR: spin550.spl -> override patching failed (copy) Failure "spin550.spl" : write out of bounds

It would appear that my installation got screwed by fucking goodberries of all things. I'll try to uninstall spell revisions and then install it, but this will probably require a major overhaul. This is what you get for forgetting to install the most important bugfix mega-mod there is. Thanks for bringing this to my attention.

Now it's spwi413.spl causing a problem (Otiluke's resilient sphere), reason: DELETE_BYTES out of bounds. Not sure which mod could screw that one up.

Yeah, Fixpack is kinda a must. Btw, the issue you're talking about has been discussed here not long ago. I guess you're using an old version of aTweaks because I think Wisp fixed it since then.

Btw, my reputation must be pretty bad if more than a player believe a mod like SR, which obviously doesn't affect ring slots at all, could cause an issue like this. :)

Ah, I must have missed that thread. I installed the newest aTweaks today though and it didn't help. I'll try to uninstall it completely again and see if it helps. And check every other mod which would mess with otiluke's sphere so that I can actually install the fixpack!

And I think your mod is great, the problem started right after I installed it though so it clearly had a compatibility issue with something else.

That's bad news, because Wisp tried to fix it in v3.54, and this version is 3.65...

I was unable to reproduce this bug, and so was Wisp iirc. So far I can only advise to uninstall aTweaks' "Regain Bhaalpowers in ToB" component.

Seems like we've got another mysterious bug in place of solved "Beregost crash" :)

After reinstalling all the mods and installing the fixpack (finally), I loaded up the game and, unsurprisingly, it crashed after equipping the ring. However, I did install the 'bhaalpowers in tob' component of aTweaks (haven't read your post then unfortunately). I am uninstalling aTweaks as we speak (I love waiting for scsii's mage scripts to update every... single... time...). Hopefully that's the component responsible.

Well, give the very unusual install order the original poster uses, it's no wonder...

You would have to --change-log the files to know the exact mods that edit the files. Or know the exact extent of the Tactics and Ascension's involvement, as they overwrite everything they touch, as these two don't have the BiG World Fixpacks patch that could possibly make them a little more compatible, as they don't overwrite after the patch.

Now, if one is to install the BG2 Fixpack, it needs to be installed before Spell Revision for it to possibly prevent the original error...

And what comes to the compatibility, the Ascension mod that's used, as said it overwrites everything it modifies, so it's better to go with the latest BP mods Ascension component.

Also it's a bit questionable to have both the 50th level spells and Spell Revision.

Few quick questions.

Does the bug occur to one particular character, or everybody? Does it happen to non-casting classes - pure Fighter or Thief?

Does turning party AI off fix the problem? If yes, does setting the bugstruck character's AI script to "None" help too? If yes, what script you've been using?

Few quick questions.

Does the bug occur to one particular character, or everybody? Does it happen to non-casting classes - pure Fighter or Thief?

Does turning party AI off fix the problem? If yes, does setting the bugstruck character's AI script to "None" help too? If yes, what script you've been using?

It happens to my main character, a sorcerer.

I started a new game and gave two rings to Imoen - it didn't crash.

Then I gave it to a new protagonist, a imported fighter (default .chr file from bg2), and it also didn't crash.

Then I imported a default mage - nothing.

Then I created a new sorcerer (human) and it didn't crash!

I loaded up the old game with my first sorcerer, turned AI off, equipped rings, nothing. I turned it back on and it crashed. The script he was using was... 'none'. Changed it to 'default' and it still crashed.

Then I created a new sorcerer (elf, like my first sorc) and guess what, it crashed.

Then I created a multiplayer party, led by an elf fighter, consisting of him, human sorcerer, dwarf berserker, imoen and elf sorcerer. None of them crashed the game, including the elf sorcerer.

Then I repeated a step: I created another elf sorcerer protagonist and he DID crash the game. I created a carbon copy of him, except that he was human and then he CRASHED the game, so it's not race.

At this point I am suspecting alignment, they were both chaotic evil. Alright then.

Created elf sorcerer, chaotic neutral. DID NOT crash the game. My first sorcerer was neutral evil.

Created a halfling fighter, chaotic evil. Crashed the game. At this point it is clear to me that what is at fault here is the alignment and the bhaalspawn abilities that come with it.

Gnome illusionist, lawful neutral. Did not crash the game.

The alignments which crash the game have one thing in common (at least in my install - which for some reason is very different from what DSimpson's magnum opus has to say on that) : the vampiric touch ability. Opened up my main character with shadowkeeper, removed his innate vampiric touch. It still crashed instantly. I loaded it up again and rested first. After equipping the rings the game did not crash instantly - it crashed after some walking around.

Clearly the bhaalspawn abilities must be at fault. I remember in the other thread that someone linked here, the person remarked that it did not crash the game in ToB, where indeed, you no longer have them. The suggestion to remove the 'retain bhaalspawn abilities in ToB' element of aTweaks ties in nicely with this theory, since they would probably crash ToB as well. Indeed, importing my character to ToB allows him to wear two rings with impunity.

I created a neutral good sorcerer - he did have one vampiric touch ability on him, but after equipping the rings, the game did not crash. So the ability itself is not at fault it would seem - but rather the 'table' itself, i.e. what alignment gets what. I shadowkeepered this sorcerer to be neutral evil; unsurprisingly the game did not crash, seeing as his innate table was already set as the neutral good one. I just did this to eliminate the unlikely possibility of the crash having something to do with the alignment itself.

This would explain why this bug might have been hard to reproduce - you might not have created an evil character to test it. I hope my findings will help you track this bizzare problem down. What could the innate ability table, the AI toggle and the right ring slot possibly have in common?

PS: aTweaks and Ascension were uninstalled for this entire experiment. I will reinstall them and see if this changes anything, although I doubt it. My problem is sort of solved; I will just have to start over with a good character and edit his alignment with shadowkeeper.

They did, thanks alot.

The problem is indeed in Vampiric Touch ability - it's level is 3, not 1 as all innates should have.

Why it only triggers when right ring slot is occupied, I don't know. I can't find any visible connection between innates' levels and item slots.
