I seem to recall he says something at least (even in the unmodded game) but I don't recall offhand what it is.

Well if you go the bad route and help Silke kill the merchants I think he says like "Your just as a bad as Silke you will get whats coming to you soon enough!" Something like that could be wrong though...Otherwise I think if you dont grab him he will just walk away like you said

With my installs I kill Silke and don't even talk to him so he apparently just stands there in the middle of the street waiting to be run over by a cart or something of the like.... last time I checked he was still there in chapter 6.

If the PC doesn't agree to help him protecting his boss when first talked to he disappears, that is vanilla BG behaviour.
